英法形近詞對比：法語achever和英語achieve

法語的 achever 和英語的 achieve 也是一對“同源詞”。 都來自拉丁語的 ad- "to" + caput "head" , 意爲“to come to a head”——到頭了，也就是“完成”啦！(Finir, mener à bien, terminer）。法語的 achever 常譯爲英語的“finish, complete, end”等詞語。
法語的 achever 的使用範圍比較廣泛，很多事情的“完成”都可以說“achever”。
例如：
Achevez d'abord votre déjeuner. Nous discuterons ensuite.
Finish your lunch first. We`ll talk afterwards.
你先吃完飯，我們隨後再談。
J'achève de ranger ma chambre et j’arrive.
I'll finish my bedroom and then I’ll come.
我收拾完臥室後馬上就來。
Déçu par ses contemporains, il décida d'achever ses jours dans un monastère.
Disappointed by his contemporaries, he decided to end his days in a monastery.
對世事心灰意冷，他決定在修道院裏度過餘生。
如果主語不是人，“Achever de + infinitif”意思也可以是“Apporter le dernier élément nécessaire pour que se réalise pleinement un état, un fait”: 終於做到某事, 在駱駝背上放最後一根稻草，例如：
Cette remarque acheva de m'irriter.
That remark brought my irritation to a head/ really did irritate me.
這句話終於把我惹火了。 （對方已經說了很多不好聽的話了吧？一直忍着呢！）
Cet argument acheva de me convaincre.
This argument was all that was needed finally to convince me.
是這個理由最終說服了我。 （已經有很多別的理由了，但並不足以說服我。）
法語“achever”的意思還可以是“結束生命，殺死” (Accabler, tuer)，此時的賓語是人或動物。
Comme le cheval avait la jambe fracturé, ils ont dû l’achever.
As the horse had a broken leg, they were forced to destroy it.
馬的腿斷了，他們不得不殺死它。
Les bandits achevèrent le gardien pour éviter d’être reconnus.
The gangsters finished off the guard to avoid being recognized.
歹徒們殺死了警衛，因爲怕被認出來。
Cette mauvaise nouvelle va l'achever. Il vaut mieux ne rien lui dire pour le moment.
The bad news will finish him off/ will be the last straw. We’d better not say anything for the moment.
這個壞消息會要了他的命的。最好先別告訴他。
Cette longue marche m’a littéralement achevé.
That long walk has really finished me.
走這麼長的路，可把我累死了。 （沒有真的死呀。^v^）
代詞式動詞 s'achever 意思也一樣，都是“結束”（end, coming to an end）
例如：
Le filme s'achève sur une scène désopilante.
The film ends with a hilarious scene.
電影在瘋狂的搞笑中結束。
Le jour s'achève.
The day is coming to an end/ is drawing to its close.
一天就要結束了。
(Radio, TV) Ainsi s’achèvent nos émissions de la journée.
That brings to an end our programmes for today.
（廣播電視用語）今天的廣播（節目）到此結束。
再看英語的“Achieve”。它的意思也是“完成，實現，達到”，但更強調爲達到目的所需的技巧、忍耐和努力：to gain with effort，to obtain as a result of exertion（通過努力達到某目標、地位、標準）。翻譯成法語時常用“Accomplir, atteindre, acquérir”。
例如：
You will never achieve anything if you don’t take life more seriously.
Tu n’arriveras / ne parviendras jamais à rien si tu ne prends pas les choses plus au sérieux.
你再不嚴肅對待生活的話，就必將一事無成。
After years of struggle, Vincent finally achieved fame (his aim).
Après des années de lutte, Vincent a finalement acquis la célébrité (attaint son but).
經過多年奮鬥，文森特終於成名了（實現了目標）。
Will he ever achieve the success he deserves?
Remportera-t-il jamais le succès qu’il mérite?
他會取得應有的成功嗎？
We have really achieved something today.
On a vraiment bien avancé aujourd’hui.
我們今天收穫不小。
The question is how we can achieve these objectives.
La question est de savoir comment atteindre ces objectifs.
問題是如何實現這些目標。
Some are born great, some achieve greatness.. (Shakespeare， Twelfth Night)
Il en est qui naissent grands, d'autres qui conquièrent les grandeurs.

看出區別了嗎？法語 “achever”可以用於大事，也可以用於小事。 而英語的“achieve”所完成的則一定是了不起的大事。看看兩個詞的名詞形式“achievement”,“achèvement”就更清楚了。
例如：
L’achèvement des travaux est prévu pour fin 2013.
The completion of the work is planned for the end of 2013.
工程預計在2013年完工。
L’autoroute est en voie d’achèvement.
The motorway is nearing completion.
高速公路就要竣工了。
“完工”，是很平常的事吧？
再看英文的“achievement”:都是很了不起的事啦，一般翻譯爲“業績”，“成就”等：
The achievement of the goals he had set himself left him only half-satisfied.
Il n’était qu’à moitié satisfait d’avoir attaint les objectifs qu’il s’était fixés.
達成了給自己設定的目標，他只感到有一半滿意。
I’ve always been fascinated by the achievement of great mountaineers like Hillary.
J’ai toujours été fasciné par les exploits de grands alpinistes tels que Hillary.
希拉里等偉大的登山家所創造的業績總是令我神往。
Finishing the book in less than a year was a tremendous achievement.
Il a fini le livre en moins d’un an. C’est une belle performance !
在不到一年的時間裏完成這本書，這真是了不起的成就。
It was one of the greatest achievement of his career.
C’est une des plus belles réalisations de sa carrière.
這是他的職業生涯中最偉大的成就之一。
好了，關於“achever”和“achieve”就先說這些吧。童鞋們是否都清楚了呢？
【法語】
法語“achever”是用於“完成，結束，完成生命，殺死”等意思，可用於大事，也可用於小事。
【英語】
英語“achieve”是“完成，實現，達到”的意思，一般用於很大的事業，業績等。
最後，再總結一下：
本期的“achieve”以及上期的“accomplish”均是來自法語的“外來語”。但英語裏已經有表示“完成”的很多說法了，比如：“finish, end, do”等等。如何分工呢？於是，“完成”的概念就要“細分”了。（還記得“切蛋糕”的比喻嗎？ ^v^）
其實，幾乎所有語言都用外來語表示“特別的”，“限定的”領域，或表示一種“高雅”文體。（會說外語也是身份的象徵吧？ ^v^）
有很多例子啦：
Voyage: 在法語裏可以是任何旅行，而在英語裏只限於“航海”和“航天”。
Carte 在法語裏可以是任何“圖，卡片”，而到了英語裏，就只限於餐桌上的“菜單”了。
而能讀懂 Carte 上那些“French-sounding”, 說起來“洋腔洋調”的菜名，就更“牛”了吧？ （Snobbish! ^v^）
所以，“吃完飯”這樣司空見慣的小事就用“finish”, 而“成就偉業”就要說“achievement”啦。 （^v^）
Snobbism 也是形成 “Faux amis” 的一個原因吧？
至於“achieve”與上期的“accomplish”的區別， 記住下面的話就可以了：
Task accomplished（完成任務）, goals achieved（實現目標）.
