擴展：如何對客戶表達“太貴了”
指“昂貴”的常用英文單詞有四：expensive, costly1, pricey, dear。五六十年代常在教科書看到的dear現在已甚少聽到外國人用了。試舉兩個例句：
Meat is dear this week. (這個星期肉很貴)
Diamonds are very dear. (鑽石價格非常昂貴)
這些句子只能在英國舊小說中看到。在現代英文口語(modern colloquial2 English)中，dear已很少用。
且聽以下三句電視對白：
男主角在車行看中了一輛名牌轎車，於是問推銷員：How much does it cost?(這輛車多少錢?)
售貨員答：It comes to $15,000.(一萬五千塊)
男主角面帶不悅之色說：It's a rip off.(貴得太離譜了。)
Rip off 在美麗俚語中有“敲竹槓”的含義。這也是英漢用詞的巧合。
後來男主角還是忍痛買了那車。他去接朋友時說：It cost me an arm and a leg。

英美人的俚語(slang and colloquial expressions)大都很形象化，活靈活現，繪聲繪影。
試試用“影像聯想法”理解這話。Cost somebody an arm and a leg，要某人的一手一腳，真要命，引伸指“非常昂貴”。
It cost me an arm and a leg. 指“那車花了我很多錢”。
