Strong showings from both an animated franchise's latest installment and a science-fiction thriller ended a post "Avengers" lull at the box office, adding some needed juice to Hollywood's summer.

The film had a bigger opening than either of the series' previous installments. "It's a very strong start to the summer family event movie season," said Anne Globe, who heads marketing for DreamWorks Animation.

As a result, "Madagascar 3" had a relatively open lane.

Coming in second place was "Prometheus," Ridley Scott's science-fiction thriller starring Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender. "Prometheus," from News Corp's Twentieth Century Fox, grossed $50 million in its North American opening weekend, with $9.1 million from premium-priced IMAX Corp. screens. News Corp. also owns The Wall Street Journal.
