“A Red, Red Rose”這首詩想必大家非常熟悉，它的作者是蘇格蘭鄉村詩人羅伯特·彭斯，也是著名歌曲“友誼地久天長”的作者，紐約曼哈頓島的中央公園裏還有他的塑像。最早讀這首詩好像是在大學時代，離現在已有二十多年了，今天偶又看到，仍覺詩寫得很美。
從格律來說，比較工整。全詩分四節，每節又有四行，大都採用抑揚格，即“弱強弱強弱強弱強”的節奏，非常適合朗讀和吟誦。
從詩意來說，熱烈而理智，奔放而又深沉，讓人久讀不厭。由明喻開篇，第一節將愛人比成六月玫瑰和琴上樂曲;再轉暗喻，第二節指自己對她的愛延續至海枯石爛;第三節心態複雜，暗指時間的流逝，愛也會有變化，讓人回想起第一節中“六月玫瑰”，終有凋零之時;第四節更將複雜心態推向高潮，既需短暫分手，又承諾必將歸來。
從用詞來說，多用古語，更增添了詩的嚴謹和華美。比如：thou=you(主格,“你”，相當於中文古字“君”或“卿”),thee=you(賓格，“你”，亦相當於中文古字“君”或“卿”)，fare thee well=farewell to you=say good-bye to you(“再見”)
亦用方言，較顯親切。如：luve=love(“愛人”，“愛”), melodie=melody(“樂曲”), gane=gone(“逝去”), ware=were(are過去式，“是”)
