The reports in Chinese news outlets on Monday about an attack on a nurse in a hospital in the southwestern city of Kunming were brief and virtually identical, suggesting they were coordinated by the authorities — often a sign of a politically delicate issue. They described how on Sunday, around 12:30 p.m., a man stabbed the nurse at the First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University, seriously wounding her.

The 30-year-old nurse, the mother of a 4-year-old, had undergone emergency surgery, and the man had been apprehended by the police, said the reports on Xinhua, the state news agency, as well as on Yunnan Online and on China National Radio. Some reports included photos showing a room where the attack was said to have taken place, with a pool of blood on the floor. Zeng Yong, the deputy head of the hospital, was quoted as saying that the hospital would improve its “stability maintenance” work.

But outside the tightly controlled state news media, a more freewheeling discussion among physicians online revealed a profession under siege after years of underfunding by the state and mounting anger from patients fed up with corruption and malpractice. The comments on the Hippocratic Community site displayed deep frustration and even raised the possibility of organizing a strike:

“Chinese law has no deterrent effect on attacks on medical personnel!”

“If doctors and nurses can’t go on strike, the situation can only get worse! The government also needs to be pressured!”

“Striking isn’t a smart option under the present system. Only self-protection is left! But self-protection is also difficult! Sometimes self-defense isn’t successful! Justified self-defense may also be punished!”The suggestion of a labor strike, though it was dismissed — such a move would probably meet with a harsh response from the authorities — highlights the anger among Chinese medical professionals over dangerous working conditions and the constant threat of attacks by dissatisfied patients, their relatives or professional “troublemakers” hired by them. Corruption among medical workers, in the form of the widely expected hongbao — a red envelope filled with cash to ensure good care — also creates resentment among patients and their families, medical sociologists say.

Many hospitals see a physical attack about once every two weeks, with the situation worse in smaller provincial facilities, according to the China Hospital Association and officials.

Attacks on medical staff have become politically sensitive because the government is trying to manage the rising anxiety among doctors and nurses over their vulnerability, medical professionals say.

In an attempt to reduce the attacks, the authorities are bringing in new regulations to govern cases of medical malpractice, according to the Supreme People’s Court Monitor blog. The authorities hope to encourage people to turn to the courts as a way to resolve grievances.

The Hippocratic Community site provided additional details about the nurse’s stabbing: The man detained for the attack had been found lying unconscious on the street by a passer-by, who then called an ambulance. The patient was taken to a hospital and treated free of charge. But after regaining consciousness he ran out, only to return with a knife and attack the intensive care unit nurse, Qin Lixia, in a room on the second floor.

Ms. Qin’s injuries included stab wounds to her head and hands. Her condition was said to be serious. What motivated the attack is unknown, both the Hippocratic Community and the state media reported.

The man was later surrounded by security and other personnel and taken into custody, but not before wounding a man who tried to subdue him, according to video footage from the Hippocratic Community site has about 90,000 users, “mainly doctors, as we only provide professional information,” said Gordon Liu Yang, a spokesman reached by telephone.

“There is too much medical violence in China,” Mr. Liu said in a separate text message. “Doctors cannot bear the burden anymore.”
