Tokyo attempted to put its scandal-hit preparations for the 2020 Olympics back on track yesterday when it finally settled on a Japanese design for the new national stadium.

But the choice of a multi-tiered, part-wooden stadium nicknamed “the hamburger” on social media could ignite further trouble after architects said it bore “remarkable similarities” to a blueprint abandoned in July.

The selection of the “trees and green” themed stadium designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma sought to end months of uncertainty. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told a specially convened cabinet meeting that the chosen design was a “wonderful plan that meets criteria such as basic principles, construction period and cost”.

The 80,000-seat stadium is estimated to cost Y149bn ($1.2bn) — below the government-imposed cap of Y155bn — and is scheduled to be completed by November 2019.

The stadium previously chosen as the centrepiece of the 2020 games, designed by Dame Zaha Hadid, was criticised when the pricetag surged above Y250bn — a doubling of the original estimate that the British architect blamed on rising labour costs in the capital.
