在英語中關於數字翻譯的技巧

英語翻譯是很多人考試時候的難點，有些專業的詞語並不太清楚該怎樣翻譯。而數字的翻譯又是一個新的難關，今天推薦一些數字翻譯的示例與技巧，有很多小夥伴看見各種數字就犯難，其實數字翻譯並不可怕，掌握了下面這些技巧，也就輕巧了。

先來看一些巧用數字翻譯的示例：

(1)等值翻譯

a drop in the ocean 滄海一粟

within a stones throw 一箭之遙

kill two birds with one stone 一箭雙鵰

(2)不等值翻譯

at sixes and sevens 亂七八糟

on second thoughts 再三考慮

by ones and twos 兩兩地，零零落落地

(3)不必譯出

在日常口筆譯翻譯工作中，除了上述這些靈活應用數字的表達之外，還有很多類型的數字翻譯處理，一起來看看常見的數字翻譯技巧吧。

需要換算數詞的翻譯

由於英語數字的表達與漢語數字的表達方式不同，漢譯時需要換算。數字的換算看起來似乎很簡單，但翻譯工作者往往會因爲不小心而犯錯誤，可謂失之毫釐、廖之千里。例如：

ten thousand(10個千)一萬

one hundred thousand(100個千)十萬

ten million(10個百萬)千萬

one hundred million(100個百萬)億

one billion十億(美式英語)

ten billion(10個十億)百億

one hundred billion(100個十億)千億

one trillion 萬億

數詞組成的常用短語

這類短語大多是由數詞和介詞搭配而成，或是數詞和其他詞類搭配而成，常用來表示不確定的範圍和概念，有時也可表示事物所處的狀態或其他情況。例如：

by hundreds 數以百計

by thousands 數以千計;大量

by(the) millions 數以百萬計

by halves 不完全

hundreds of 數百;數以百計

概數的譯法

概數是用來表示簡略、大概情況的數字。英語和漢語中都有使用概數來表示不確定的範圍或概念的語言現象。例如漢語中的幾個、十來個、若干、大約、大概、左右、上下、約有、不到、多於、少於等概念，在英語中都能找到與之對等的詞。

(一) 表示“大約”、“不確定”的翻譯策略

在英語中，一般常使用about， some， around， round， nearly， towards， somewhere about， estimated， approximately， in/of/on the border of， close to等詞修飾數字，表示“不確定”、“大約”、“上下”、“將近”、“幾 乎”等。

It is nearly (or towards) 4 o’clock.

現在已是將近4點了。

The price of this new machine is in the neighborhood of a thousand dollars.

這臺新機器的價格約1，000美元。

According to the weatherman， the temperature will be up 5℃ or so.

據天氣預報，氣溫將升高5℃左右。

(二)表示“高於”、“多於”的翻譯方法

英語常用more than， odd， over， above， long， past， or more， upwards of ， higher than， exceed， in excess of 等詞修飾數字，表示“超過”、“以上”、“有餘”、“高於”、“多於”等。

The weight of this child is said to be over one hundred pounds.

據說，這個孩子的體重有100多磅。

It took me more than two hours to finish the homework.

我花了兩個多小時才做完家庭作業。

(三)表示“少於”、“差一些”、“不到”等的翻譯方法

英語常用less， less than， below， no more than， under， short of ， off， to， within， as few as 等詞修飾數字，表示“少於”、“不到”、“以下”等。

The price of that tricycle is less than one hundred and eighty-five francs.

那輛三輪車的人售價還不到185法郎。

倍數的譯法

倍數在英語中使用得相當普遍，但在表達方式上，英漢兩種語言卻大相徑庭。例如：to increase 5 times，漢語可譯成“增加到5倍”，也可譯成“增加了4倍”;to decrease 5 times在漢語中通常不譯爲“減少5倍”，而譯爲“減少到1/5”或“減少了4/5”。因此“了”和“到”這類問題很容易使人混淆迷惑。翻譯時務必謹慎嚴密，力爭做到準確無誤。

(一)倍數增加的譯法

英語中表示倍數增加時，常常要把基數包括在內。增加的倍數通常指現在的數量爲原來數量的倍數。譯成漢語“增加到若干倍”、“爲……的若干倍”或“若干倍於……”這種句型時，可將原文中數字照舊譯出;若是譯成“增加(了)若干倍”這種句型時，通常要把原文中的數字減去一。

1.倍數+as…as

The grain output of this year is about three times as great as that of last year.

今年的糧食產量大約是去年的三倍。(或：今年的糧食產量比去年多兩倍左右。)

Asia is four times as large as Europe.

亞洲比歐洲大3倍。(或：亞洲是歐洲的4倍大。)

2.倍數+比較級+than

Kuwait oil wells yield nearly 500 times more than U.S. wells.

科威特油井的產油量幾乎是美國油井的500倍。

Iron is almost three times heavier than aluminum.

鐵的重量幾乎是鋁的3倍。(或：鐵幾乎比鋁重兩倍。)

3.表示增加意義的動詞+倍數

常見的表示增加意義的動詞有increase， rise， exceed， grow， raise， expand， go up等。

The number of the students enrolled in evening classes has increased more than twofold.

註冊上晚間課的學生人數增加了一倍多。

The production of various picture tubes has been increased four times as against 1993.

各種顯像管的產量比1993年增加了3倍。

4.表示增加意義的詞+by a factor of+數詞

這種名句譯成漢語時，必須把原文中的數字減去一，因爲漢語不把基數包括在內。

Today the speed of our car exceeds the ordinary speed by a factor of three.

今天，我們的汽車速度超過了平常速度的兩倍。

The population of this county has increasedby a factor of five

這個縣的人口已經增長了4倍。

5.表示倍數意義的詞+賓語(或表語)

英語中表示倍數意義的動詞主要有double(變成兩倍)，treble(變成三倍)，quadruple(變成四倍)等。這些詞也能當形容詞使用。作不及物動詞時，後面沒有賓語或表語。

The new airport will double the capacity of the existing one.

新機場是現有機場容量的2倍。

The population has nearly trebled in forty years.

人口在40年中增加了近2倍。

The company quadrupled output to around 20 million tons.

該公司把產量增至2，000萬噸 左右，是原來的4倍。

(二)倍數減少的譯法

英語中常使用表示減少意義的詞加上數詞來說明減少的倍數。減少的倍數通常指原來數量爲現在數量的倍數。

1.用表示“減少”的動詞(decrease， reduce， fall， lower等)連接“by n 或n%”，表示淨減量;用系動詞連接“n less(than)”表示淨減量，所減數字均可照譯。

180 decreased by 90 is 90.

180減去90等於90。

The cost decreased by 40%.

成本下降了40%。

This new process used 35% less fuel.

這種工藝少用了35%的燃料。

2.用表示“減少”的動詞(decrease， reduce， fall， lower等)連接“by n times”，“n times”，“n times as + 形容詞或副詞+as”，“by a factor of n”等，均可譯 作“減少了n分之(n-1)”或“減少到n分之1”。

因爲英漢語言在使用分數方面的差異(如漢語的分母中極少使用小數點)，如果英語減少的倍數中有小數點時，則應換算成分數。

The principal advantage is a four fold reduction in volume.

主要優點是體積縮小了3/4。

The error probability of the equipment was reduced by 2.5 times through technical innovation.

通過技術革新該設備誤差概率降低3/5。

口譯中的數字翻譯技巧

數字翻譯既是口譯難點，又是口譯重點。關於數字翻譯，我們的調查顯示：英譯漢時難點在記憶，漢譯英時，難點在於快速表達。

以下從記筆記和轉換兩方面來演示如何實踐以求儘快掌握數字的翻譯。

一般說來，數字本身是毫無意義的，因此難以記憶。所以，一定要靠記筆記。聽數字時，我們需區分中英文單位間的差異，符號分割。

A. 記筆記：用符號來代替單位

a) 英譯中

如果同學從收音機中聽到下面一羣複雜的數字，你該怎麼記錄呢?

例：It covers a total of five hundred forty-nine million nine hundred forty-six thousand seven hundred and sixty-eight square meters.

可能會有這樣的幾種記錄方法：

第一種：5 h 49 m 9 h 46 th 7 h 68 sqm

第二種：549 m 946 th 768 sqm

如果在英譯中時考生這麼記錄的話，恐怕等到規定翻譯的時間過了你還沒搞清究竟這堆數字是多少，翻成中文該怎麼說。

英文表達數字時可以從右往左，三位一逗號，例如：10,859,783

三位一逗號，逗號從右往左分別對應的是：thousand, million, billion, etc。這也就是說，除了逗號，其餘的最大不會超過三位數，因此，要想英文數字記得快而準，三位數的聽寫要過關。

但是這麼寫後怎樣用中文表達出來呢?用中文表達出來時，可以用便於中國人表達的方式做一下記號，即從右往左、四位一豎。

剛纔例舉的數字：549,946,768可以這麼添上記號：5│49,94│6,768

四位一豎，豎線從右往左分別對應的是：萬，億

所以上面的數字經劃線後可以輕鬆的讀成：五億四千九百九十四萬六千七百六十八

b) 中譯英

有了上面中譯英部分數字的記錄和表達方法，相信這部分的數字就比較簡單。我們舉幾個例子看看如果把中文翻成英文，倒過來推即可。

例：我們從收音機中聽到三萬二千五百

這個數字相對較短、較簡單，不需要把中文中的“萬”劃成豎線也可以，所以：

首先 寫下聽到的數字3│2500

然後 三位一逗號 32,500，

最後 從右往左的第一個逗號對應的是thousand，所以數字表達成：thirty-two thousand five hundred

再舉一例：我們從收音機中聽到十二億七百二十一萬四百七十二

這個數字相對較長、較複雜，我們這麼處理：

首先 中文的“萬”“億”按四位一豎的方法記錄，因此寫成12│0721│0472。之所以面對較長較大的數字這步不省的原因是：如果

你沒有其中的一豎，同學往往容易在後面的“721”“472”前漏寫0，這樣就使數字的表達有誤。

其次 按英文從右往左三位一逗號的方法標上標記，1,2│07,21│0,472

最後 根據英文從右往左每個逗號分別代表的是thousand, million, billion用英語表達出該數字：one billion two hundred and seven million two hundred and ten thousand four hundred and seven-two

有了逗號和豎線的輔助，從某種程度上說，長的數字要更容易記錄和表達。

B. 轉換

同學非常熟悉中文裏面的“個、百、千、萬、十萬、百萬、千萬、億、十億、百億….”。每一級的單位都有，非常齊全。而在英語中同學掰指數來：hundred, thousand, million, billion, trillion。總覺得和中文配不起來，因此同學碰到“萬、十萬、千萬、億”要特別注意，要反覆操練這幾個數字，這幾個數字在中譯英時尤爲重要。

1萬= ten thousand

10萬= one hundred thousand

1000萬= ten million

1億= one hundred million

在這裏要補充說明的是考生可能聽到的中文數字非常簡單，例如：十三億，這麼短的數字，同學記錄的時候只需寫13億。在念的時候，由於英語中沒有“億” 這個單位，只有“十億”這個單位，同學只需從右邊往左小數點移一位即可，13變成1.3，在1.3後面的單位是billion。

不妨看這幾個例子：

945億 即94.5 billion

36億 即3.6 billion

但是一旦碰到“5億”又該怎麼辦呢?如果按照上述以小數點的辦法，不就成了0.5 billion嗎?英語中沒有“億”這個單位，我們只能退到下面的單位：million。“億”轉換成“million”之間需要多加兩個零。所以5億就表達成500 million。
