1. 解釋

The handwriting on the wall源於一個聖經故事。古巴比倫國王大了一個大勝仗，他一時被衝昏了頭腦，和那些王公貴族們做了很多神靈的事情。此時，空中伸出一隻大手，在牆上寫下一些他們不能理解的奇怪文字。這時候，一位小天使出現了，他告訴這位犯下罪孽的國王，牆上的這些字是神靈的啓示，意思是巴比倫國王高高在上的的日子已經屈指可數了，預言不就就真的發生了。從此，handwriting on the wall就比喻成了一個比喻，意指“災禍降臨的預兆”，即“凶兆”。其英文解釋爲：the likelihood that something bad will happen。如果一個人能read the handwriting on the wall就表示他能敏銳地感受到某種預兆。因此，對話中的“I am able to read the handwriting on the wall.”的意思是“我能預料得到事情會發生。”也可以用作see the handwriting on the wall。
