Sir Lancelot was the finest knight in the court ofKing Arthur, a bravest and Most skillful fighter. Heoften fought in disguise, but he was alwaysrecognized because no other knight had as muchcourage and skill as he. Lancelot was brought up bythe Lady of the Lake, a woman with magic powers,who took him as an infant to her castle at thebottom of a lake. After he reached manhood, theLady of the Lake brought him to Arthur’s court,where he proved is courage and was made one of teKnight of the Round Table. Lancelot and Guenevere,the queen, fell in love at Arthur’s court. Lancelot was also loved by Elanine, a beautiful girl, buthe soon deserted her and she died of a broken heart. After Arthur discovered the love affairbetween Lancelot and his wife, the lovers fled to Lancelot’s castle. Lancelot killed several of hisfellow knights after they found him with the queen. Later, Lancelot returned Guenevere toArthur and left Britain. Arthur pursued Lancelot to France but went back to Britain afterlearning that Modred had seized his kingdom. Lancelot returned to Britain after Arthur’s deathand learned that Guenevere had become a nun. He became a religious hermit and died shortlyafter Guenevere did. Lancelot and Elaine had an illegitimate son, Galahad, who became afamous knight of the Round Table.

Along with many other knights, Lancelot searched for the Holy Grail, the cup that Jesus Christused at the Last Supper. Because he had moral defects, he did not find the Holy Grail. But hisson, Sir Galahad, did.

Sir Galahad was the noblest and purest of theKnights of the Round Table. Because he is entirelyfree of sin, Galahad succeeded in finding the HolyGrail while many other knight of King Arthur failed.

Galahad was the son of the knight Lancelot and thelady Elaine. He was brought up by a nun until, at age15, he was introduced to his father, who made him aknight and accompanied him to Arthur’s e Galahad went directly to the seat called theSiege Perilous, which was reserved for the knight so pure that he would someday find the HolyGrail. All others who had tried to take the seat had been swallowed up by the earth. At the timethe knights there found a great stone with a sword stuck in it. On the sword were thesewords:“No one shall draw me out of this stone except the Knight at whose side I am to he must be the best knight in the world.” Many of the knights tried, but none could drawout the sword. But Sir Galahad drew it easily from the stone.

During the search for the Grail, Galahad showed himself to be a superb knight. He succeededin finding the holy object not because he was strong or skillful in fighting, but because he waspure in heart. After finding the Grail with two other knights, Percival and Bors, Galahad becameKing of Sarras. He died one year later.
