    My old friend, Harrison had lived in the Mediterranean for many years before he returned to England. He had often dreamed of retiring in England and had planned to settle down in the country. He had no sooner returned than he bought a house and went to live there. Almost immediately he began to complain about the weather, for even though it was still summer, it rained continually and it was often bitterly cold. After so many years of sunshine, Harrison got a shock. He acted as if he had never lived in England before. In the end, it was more than he could bear. He had hardly had time to settle down when he sold the house and left the country. The dream he had had for so many years ended there. Harrison had thought of everything except the weather.

  我的老朋友哈里森在回到英國以前曾多年居住在地中海地區。過去他常幻想退休後到英國，並計劃在鄉間安頓下來。他剛一回到英國便買下了一幢房子住了進去。但緊接着他就開始抱怨那裏的天氣了。因爲即使那時仍爲夏季，但雨總是下個不停，而且常常冷得厲害。在陽光下生活了那麼多年的哈里森對此感到驚奇。他的舉動就好像他從未在英國生活過一樣。最後，他再也忍受不住，還沒等安頓下來就賣掉了房子，離開了這個國家。他多年來的幻想從此破滅。哈里森把每件事情都考慮到了，唯獨沒想到天氣。 

第三部分 LANGUAGE POINTS

1、Harrison had lived in the Mediterranean for many years before he returned to England.
the Mediterranean：the Mediterranean area

2、He had often dreamed of retiring in England and had planned to settle down in the country.
dream of doing:夢想...
settle down：安頓

3、Almost immediately he began to complain about the weather, for even though it was still summer, it rained continually and it was often bitterly cold.
complain to sb : 向某人抱怨
complain of/about : 抱怨某事
for:連詞，解釋前面的句子，相當於“因爲”，但for不能用於句首
even though:即使,這一結構引出讓步狀語從句
continually:不停地
比較： Continuously (連續不斷地) Continually (頻繁地)

4、After so many years of sunshine, Harrison got a shock.
shock:吃驚，震驚，比如由於令人不安的消息
get a shock : 嚇了一跳, 吃了一驚

5、He acted as if he had never lived in England before.
as if=as though,後面用虛擬語氣，常用來引導表示方式的狀語從句

6、It was more than he could bear.
more than：超出

課文中的關鍵句型

1）He had no sooner returned than he bought a house and went to live there. （一...就）
=As soon as he returned,he bought a house and went to live there.
注意no 句型中的時態
had no sooner ...(時態結構 : 完成時態 + than + 一般過去時)
Ex:
I had no sooner entered the room than the telephone rang.
No sooner had I entered the room than the telephone rang(倒裝用法)

2）He had hardly had time to settle down when he sold the house ...(還沒來得及...就..)
注意句型中的時態
Ex:
I had hardly known him well enough when he began to greet me like an old friend.
Hardly had I known him well enough when he began to greet me like an old friend(倒裝用法)
