The 90-minute gala started at 8 pm, with 70 columns of synchronized fireworks shooting into the night sky above Tian'anmen Square, representing the 70 years since New China was founded.

A total of 60,000 people aged six to 66 years performed in the square. AMong them were people from all walks of life, including farmers, workers, teachers, doctors and deliverymen.
總共6萬羣衆參加了天安門廣場的演出活動，其中最小的6歲，最大的66歲；他們來自社會各界，包括農民、工人、教師、醫生、快遞員等。
The performances began with "Ode to the Red Flag," with more than 3,000 performers carrying light panels portraying a huge national flag, and scenes of soldiers guarding the flag and children saluting the flag.
聯歡活動以“紅旗頌”拉開序幕，3000多名錶演者手持光影屏構成巨幅國旗的圖案，並呈現出戰士護衛國旗，少年兒童向國旗致敬的場景。
"The event aims to highlight the new look of a new era through a free, lively and jubilant atmosphere," said Zhang Yimou, chief director of the evening gala.
聯歡活動總導演張藝謀表示：“聯歡活動旨在通過自由、生動、歡愉、活潑的氛圍突出新時代的新面貌。”
一場視聽盛宴
Tian'anmen Square was divided into four parts, with different programs showcasing performances brought by both artists and the public. An orchestra was also brought to the square, offering the audience a visual and acoustic feast.
天安門廣場分爲四個區域，展現藝術家和羣衆帶來的不同表演。交響樂團也來到了天安門廣場，爲觀衆帶來一場視聽盛宴。
