The Glendalough Valley is famous for its Monastic Site with Round Tower, scenic lakes and valleys, as well as a selection of walks and trails including The Wicklow Way.

But venture an hour further east, and you will be richly rewarded by the Yorkshire Dales. Although it lacks some of the Lakes’ intensity, this National Park more than compensates with its laid-back pastoral bliss and picturesque picnic spots.

Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland

Five years ago Iceland embarked on a major conservation effort, uniting two of its existing national parks to create the largest national park in Western Europe. Spanning nearly 8,500 square miles (that’s just short of 13% of the country), Vatnajökull is also appropriately home to the largest glacier in the world outside the Arctics – the massive Vatnajökull glacier which measures over 3,000ft thick in some areas.

Saxony Switzerland National Park, Germany

Despite its misleading name, this National Park sits squarely in eastern Germany. Though you could be forgiven for thinking you were amidst Alpine foothills when you glance around the rocky outcrops for which this area is famous.

Swiss National Park, Switzerland

Celebrating its 99th birthday this year, the Swiss National Park is the only national park in Switzerland and is the oldest in the Alps. Thanks to its 50 mile network of walking routes and landscapes which varies from gentle Alpine meadows to precipitous cliffs (not to mention elevation which ranges from 4,593ft to 10,498ft) this is a walkers paradise.

Teide National Park, Spain

Not only is Teide National Park the highest peak in Spain, standing over 12,000ft tall, it also forms the country’s largest national park and is the most popular, welcoming a whopping four million visitors every year.

A cable car can take you most of the way to the top of the volcanic star attraction, leaving you to complete the final 200ft to the summit by foot for unsurpassed views of Tenerife. The more adventurous and physically energetic can opt for the route that sets off from the mountain’s base and which takes around six hours to complete.
