the Twelve Apostles

It was three hundred years before the birth of Christ the Lord, and there lived a mother who had twelve sons, but she was so poor and needy that she did not know how she would be able to keep them alive. She prayed daily to God that he might allow her sons to be together on earth with the promised savior. When her need became even GREater she sent them, one after the other, out into the world to seek something to eat.
the oldest one was named Peter. He went forth, and had already walked far, an entire day's journey, when he found himself in a GREat forest. He looked for a way out, but could not find one, going instead deeper and deeper into the woods. His hunger was so great that he could barely stand upright. He finally became so weak that he had to lie down, and he believed that he was near death.
Suddenly there stood before him a small boy. He glistened, and was as beautiful and as friendly as an angel. The child clapped his hands together, causing Peter to look up at him. Then he said, "Why are you sitting there so sadly?"
"Oh," answered Peter, "I am walking about in the world seeking something to eat, so that I might be able to see the promised savior, for that is my GREatest wish."
the child said, "Come with me. Your wish shall be fulfilled."
He took poor Peter by the hand and led him between the cliffs to a large cave. They went inside, and everything glistened with gold, silver, and crystal. In the middle there stood twelve cradles next to each other.
then the little angel said, "Lie down in the first one, and sleep a little. I will rock you."
Peter did this, and the little angel sang to him and rocked him until he fell asleep.
While he slept the second brother came to him. He too had been brought there by his guardian angel, and he too was rocked to sleep. In a like manner the others came as well, each in turn, until all twelve were lying there asleep in the golden cradles. There they slept for three hundred years until the night when the savior of the world was born. Then they awoke and were with him on earth, and they were called the twelve apostles.

孩子說：“那就跟我來吧!你的願望會滿足的。”他拉着可憐的彼得的手，領着他穿過懸崖，來到一個山洞前。他們走進了山洞，裏面全是金銀水晶，一切都在閃閃發光。在洞的正中央有十二個搖藍挨個兒排放着。
小天使說：“躺到第一個搖籃裏睡一會兒，我會搖你入睡的。”彼得照做了，天使邊唱歌邊輕輕晃動他着，最後搖他進入了夢鄉。當他睡熟時，老二也被他的保護天使領來了，他也像哥哥一樣被搖着進了夢鄉;接着其他兄弟一個接着一個都來了，直到最後十二個兄弟都躺在金色的搖籃裏睡着了。
他們睡啊，睡啊，一直到三百年後的最後一個晚上，救世主降臨了，那時他們醒了，最終和救世主在一起，成了人們所說的耶蘇的十二門徒。

Once in the wintertime when the snow was very deep， a poor boy had to go out and fetchwood on a sled. After he had gathered it together and loaded it， he did not want to gostraight home， because he was so frozen， but instead to make a fire and warm himself a littlefirst. So he scraped the snow away， and while he was thus clearing the ground he found asmall golden key. Now he believed that where there was a key， there must also be a lock， sohe dug in the ground and found a little iron chest. “If only the key fits!” he thought. “Certainlythere are valuable things in the chest.” He looked， but there was no keyhole. Finally he foundone， but so small that it could scarcely be seen. He tried the key， and fortunately it he turned it once， and now we must wait until he has finished unlocking it and hasopened the lid. Then we shall find out what kind of wonderful things there were in the littlechest.

Ages ago， when God himself walked upon earth， the ground's fertility was much GREaterthan it now is. At that time the ears did not return fifty or sixty-fold， but rather four to fivehundred-fold. The kernels grew from the bottom to the top of the stalk. However long thestalk was， that was also the length of the ear. But it is the way of humankind， that whenthey have a surplus they do not value the blessings that come from God， but instead becomeindifferent and frivolous.
One day a woman was walking along a grain field， and her little child， who was jumpingalong beside her， fell into a puddle and got his clothes dirty. The mother tore off a handful ofthe beautiful ears of grain and cleaned his clothes with them.
the Lord was just then passing by， and when he saw her doing this， he became angryand said， “From this time forth the grain-stalk shall bear no more ears of grain. Humans arenot worthy of this heavenly gift.”
the bystanders who heard this were horrified， fell to their knees， and begged him toleave at least something on the grain-stalk， even if they did not deserve it， at least for thesake of the innocent chickens， who otherwise would starve to death.
the Lord， foreseeing the misery that would come， took pity on them and granted theirwish. Thus the ear at the top of the stalk remained， just as it grows today.

碰巧上帝從這兒經過，見到這情形他非常生氣，說：“從此麥稈不再結穗，人類不配再獲得上蒼的賜予。”周圍的人聽到這話嚇壞了，紛紛跪下，祈求上帝仍留些麥穗於稈上，即使人類不配這一恩賜，但是爲了那些無辜的家禽，求上帝開恩，否則它們就會餓死。上帝預見到人類的苦難，可憐他們，答應了這一請求。於是麥穗留了下來，就像現在生長的這樣子。
