With his working-class roots in Pennsylvania, which is emerging as a swing state, Mr Biden may prevent some white working-class men from abandoning the Democratic party .

Paul Manafort, the Trump campaign chairman, told the Financial Times that Mr Trump would hit Mrs Clinton for backing trade deals such as Nafta, which her husband signed. “As far as some of the other issues (related to women), I think they relate more to Mrs Clinton being an enabler,” said Mr Manafort.
