New York Transit Museum: Ghost Station Tour

City Hall Station, an abandoned station of the New York Rapid Transit (運輸) subway, was originally the last stop at the southern end of the subway line. Opened in 1904, the station was designed to be the most impressive station of the city’s new subway system.

City Hall Station remained in use until 1945, when the station had to be closed due to certain changes in the city’s subway system. As more and more passengers started to travel by subway, it became necessary to add more cars to subway trains. This meant that subway platforms needed to be extended to fit the longer trains. However, City Hall Station was originally built with a short, bent platform, making improvements to the station difficult. Rather than trying to rebuild it, officials chose to abandon City Hall Station in favor of another nearby station, the Brooklyn Bridge Station. Thus, City Hall became a “ghost” (鬼,幽靈) station on the New York subway line, a modern underground ruin.

Although the station is no longer used by subway travelers, the New York Transit Museum has found a new use for the station. The museum has reopened City Hall Station for tourists. Due to the historic significance and beauty of this station, the New York Transit Museum schedules special tours of the station. With some new features added, the station has been named as a landmark by the U.S. government.

Tour Information and Reservations

Please make reservations with the Transit Museum from Tuesday to Friday, 10 am to 4 pm. Payment in advance is required for tours and must be received at least one week before the scheduled tour. Payment can be made by credit or check.

Tours may require a lot of walking. Wear good walking shoes and comfortable clothes. For your safety, follow the instructions of the tour guide when touring abandoned stations, stay with the group at all times, and follow instructions or signs at the facilities.

Photography is not permitted inside abandoned facilities and some tours have been restricted since 2001 due to security concerns. Please check before booking.

Four to one to the computer. That was the score. AlphaGo, a program developed by Google’s London-based artificial intelligence (AI) team Deep-Mind, has just beaten a human at a really complicated game. The field of honor is a Go(圍棋) board in Seoul (首爾), South Korea. Lee Sedol (李世石), a South Korean, is a world Go champion and is considered the game’s most outstanding player. But he was defeated by AlphaGo.

The contest has drawn tens of thousands of online spectators who have followed the matches live on the Internet. Videos of the competition have received more than four million views since the contest began on March 9. The five-game contest took a week in all. While at a pre-match press conference, Lee said he was confident he would win five to nil (零分) or, at least, four to one, he defeated AlphaGo only once in the fourth game.

“When I look back on the three games, even if I were to go back and redo the first game, I think I would not be able to win because I misjudged AlphaGo,” Lee said at a post-game press conference on March12, following his third straight defeat. Go, which originated in China thousands of years ago, is played on a 19 x 19 board with black and white stones (棋子). The board’s size means the number of possible moves is greater than the number of atoms in the observable universe. Go is said to be the only game that truly balances the left and right sides of the brain. According to Demis Hassabis, the leading founder of Deep Mind, Go poses a more difficult programming challenge than chess. AlphaGo’s success marked the most significant milestone ever in AI.

Yet AlphaGo is only going to get smarter as it gathers more data from which it learns. Asked whether there was a ceiling to its abilities, Hassabis said he did not know. “If there is, we haven’t found it yet.”

25. Which of the following is TRUE about Go?

A. Go is a game dating back to millions of years ago in China.

B. Go is played on a 19 x 19 board with black and red stones.

C. The possible moves of Go is beyond our imagination.

D. Go is the only game that will do good to your brain.

26. The contest between AlphaGo and Lee Sedol ________.

A. ended up with five to nil

B. lasted more than a week

C. aroused people’s love to the game of Go

D. drew many people’s attention and enthusiasm

27. From the passage we know that ________.

A. Go is a game that human can’t play well

B. AlphaGo marks a milestone in AI

C. Lee Sedol lacks the courage to win AlphaGo

D. AlphaGo will take the place of Go’s most outstanding player

28. What Demis Hassabis said means ________.

A. it’s not difficult to develop the program of Go

B. there is no limit to develop the intelligence of AlphaGo

C. AlphaGo could collect more information on its own

D. the designers of AlphaGo is not wise enough to update AlphaGo

C

This is the first animated movie I’ve seen for 2016. And I must say that Zootopia has really set the bar high in terms of overall quality. As of this writing it still has a 99% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

There is a lot of animated movies this year that circles around animals like Kung Fu Panda, Finding Dory, ICE AGE 5, Norm of the North and Angry Birds but I think no animated film is grabbing adult themes, like racism and cultural prejudice, by the horns like Zootopia.

Zootopia sets up a world where animals evolved(進化to a civilization where predators(捕食者) and prey have learned to co-exist and create a thriving society.

The movie is a buddy cop film where the two main characters, Officer Judy Hopps (the first rabbit to become a cop) and Nick Wilde (a sly street hustler) have to solve the mystery of 14 missing animals. Through their mystery adventure they meet a lot of different characters and learn things about each other and about themselves.

Just some interesting points of observation:

?I personally found how they created the world of Zootopia amazing. I think that our local city planners could learn a thing or two about creating an inclusive city by watching this film.

?The movie is highly accurate to reflect the current times like how a politician is using fear to pit most of the mammals against Zootopia’s minority population of predators(捕食者).

Overall Zootopia was light, funny, has a nice message about working to achieve your dreams and has a catchy pop song to go with it. But the magic is how they tied in cultural diversity and our need to recognize our own prejudices and correct it. In this day and age there should already be less hate and hopefully both children and adults learn this lesson.

29. Which of the following is NOT true about the animated film Zootopia?

A. It has an attractive pop song to go with it.

B. There are only two characters in the film, Officer Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde.

C. The film Zootopia has won favorable comments from the audience.

D. The character, Officer Judy Hopps, in the film is the first rabbit to become a cop.

30. What lesson does the author want both children and adults can learn from the film Zootopia?

A. Be braver. B. Be anything. C. Be less hate. D. Be more funny.

31. Where is the text most likely to appear?

A. In a health magazine. B. In a finance report.

C. In a film review. D. In an English textbook.

D

?Inspector Sands to the control room, please.” If you ever hear that at a British train station, don’t panic. But you might appreciate knowing that this is a codeword meant to inform staff that there is an emergency somewhere in the building. The idea is to avoid causing alarm among commuters(通勤者), but still get the message out to those trained to deal with the problem.

The subject of secret codewords like this was raised this week on Reddit, and the discussion has attracted thousands of examples. But what codewords and signs are really out there in the wild?

A good place to start is hospital emergency codes. These are often colour-coded, and one health centre in Canada has published its list online. “Code red” announces a fire, “code white” indicates a violent person while “code black” means a bomb threat is active. It’s been reported that hospital staff sometimes refer to the morgue as “Rose Cottage”, in order to avoid upsetting relatives of a patient who has recently died.

“I can see very good reasons for having these codes,” says Paul Baker, a linguist at the University of Lancaster. “It may be that people are unsure when they’re giving the code so there’s no point upsetting members of the public.”

Not all codes are alphanumeric(字母數字的). Some are visual, intended to be hidden in plain sight. As BBC Future discovered earlier this year, many banknotes feature a specific pattern of dots placed there to prevent people from photocopying money. Many copiers and scanners are programmed to spot it.

And finally, the spray-painted squiggles(波形曲線) you see on pavements in towns and cities all over the world are codes understood by construction workers and engineers. For example, in UK, different colours are related to different types of cable or pipe. Blue meant a water system while yellow indicated gas lines and green labelled CCTV or data wiring.

All of these codes have a purpose --- to avoid causing panic, to transmit subtle signals in social groups, or to provide technical information quickly and easily. “People don’t like secrets, do they?” says Baker. “There is a drive to have as much information as possible --- we do live in the information age,” he adds.

32. The following are purposes of the secret codes except ________.

A. to avoid causing alarm and panic among the public.

B. to send sensitive signals in social groups.

C. to provide technical information quickly and easily.

D. to make people believe you are wiser.

33. The underlined word “morgue” in paragraph 3 refers to the room in a hospital ______.

A. where patients are treated

B. where dead bodies are kept

C. where a patient has an operation

D. where a surgeon cuts open the patients’ bodies

34. How many kinds of secret codes are mentioned in the passage?

A. 2. B. 3. C. 4. D. 5.

35. Which of the following could be the best title of the passage?

A. The secret codes you are not meant to know

B. Where to find the codes

C. The origin of different codes

D. Codes in the modern society

If you enjoy drinking cappuccino at coffee shops, you can also make it at home.

First, organize all the things you will need. You’ll need some freshly boiled coffee, some skimmed milk, and a big cup to put your cappuccino in. You might also want some sugar, cinnamon(桂皮香料), or chocolate to put on top. 36

The second step is to keep the coffee hot while you make the milk. 37 Otherwise, you might want to put the coffee in a thermos to keep it hot. The next step is to warm the milk and make it frothy (give it lots of bubbles). You can warm the milk on the stove, but watch it carefully to be sure that it doesn’t boil over. 38

After you have warmed the milk, you need to beat it until it is frothy. You can do this by hand with a whisk(攪拌器) or a beater, or you could pour the warm milk into a blender(攪拌機) and run it on high (give it lots of bubbles) for about 30 seconds. Now that you have made the milk frothy, you are ready to combine it with the hot coffee. 39

Finally, you can add sugar, cinnamon, or chocolate to flavor your cappuccino. 40

A. Pour the coffee into cups and pour the milk on top of it.

B. Taste it first to see whether it is delicious.

C. Have these things ready before you do anything else. D. Drink it and enjoy this coffee treat.

E. Never add too much milk to it.

F. If you made the coffee in an electric coffeepot, keep it turned on.

Ammie Reddick from East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, was only 18 months old when she had the accident that had scarred(留下創傷) her for life. The curious child reached up to grab the wire of a hot kettle in the family kitchen and poured boiling water over her tiny infant frame.

Her mother Ruby turned round and, seeing Ammie horribly burnt, called an ambulance which rushed her daughter to a nearby hospital. Twenty percent of Ammie’s body had been burned and all of her burns were third-degree. There, using tissue(組織) taken from unburned areas of Ammie’s body, doctors performed complex skin transplants(移植) to close her wounds and control her injuries, an operation that took about six hours. Over the next 16 years, Ammie underwent 12 more operations to repair her body.

When she started school at Maxwelton Primary at age 4, other pupils made cruel comments or simply wouldn’t play with her. “I was the only burned child in the street, the class and the school,” she recalled, “some children refused to become friends because of that.”

Today, aged 17, Ammie can only ever remember being a burned person with scars; pain is a permanent part of her body. She still has to have two further skin transplants. Yet she is a confident, outgoing teenager who offers inspiration and hope to other young burns victims.

She is a member of the Scottish Burned Children’s Club, a charity set up last year. This month, Ammie will be joining the younger children at the Graffham Water Center in Cambridge shire for the charity’s first summer camp. “I’ll show them how to get rid of unkind stares from others.” she says. Ammie loves wearing fashionable sleeveless tops, and she plans to show the youngsters at the summer camp that they can too. “I do not go to great lengths to hide my burns scars,” she says, “I gave up wondering how other people would react years ago.”

Global retailers (零售商) lose nearly $ 450 billion every year as a result of out-of-stock items, empty shelves, and other human errors. So Simbe Robotics today announced its’ first product----Tally. It is the world’s first robotic autonomous shelf auditing and analytics solution.

Tally can help look for stock (庫存) that is running low and stock that is nearing its sell-by-date. It can also analyze gaps in the shelves while looking for products that are in the wrong place or facing the wrong direction. Pricing errors can be found too.

“When it comes to the retail industry, shopping experience is everything. If a product is unavailable at the time the shopper wants to buy it, the retailer has missed an opportunity and disappointed the customer,” according to Brad Bogolea, CEO and co-founder of Simbe Robotics. “ Tally helps retailers address these challenges by providing more precise and timely analysis of the state of in-store goods and freeing up staff to focus on customer service.”

Tally stands 38 inches tall, and has an adjustable sensor for capturing shelf data. The overall height is variable, depending on the retailer’s shelf height requirements. Tally weighs approximately 30 lbs. and can be easily moved to anywhere within a retail store’s floor plan.

It is currently in trial with several North American retailers. If current trials of Tally show it to be genuinely effective, this clever little creation could well find its way into the stores far and wide soon.

24. What is Paragraph 1 mainly talking about?

A. The working principle of Tally. B. The necessity of inventing Tally.

C. The situation of global retailers. D. The influence of inventing Tally.

A survey revealed the average Asian dad spent one minute a day with his children. I was shocked. I mean, a whole minute? Every day? Get real. Once a week maybe. The fact is, many Asian males are terrible at kid-related things. Actually, I am one of them.

Child-rearing(養育) doesn’t come naturally to guys. My mother knew the names of our teachers, best friends and crushes. My dad was only vaguely aware there were short people sharing the apartment. My mother bought healthy fresh food at the market every day. My dad would only go shopping when there was nothing in the fridge except a jar of capers and a bay leaf. Then he’d buy beer. My mother always knew the right questions to ask our teachers. My dad would ask my English teacher if she could get us a discount on school fees. My mother served kid food to kids. My dad added chili sauce to everything, including our baby food.

The truth is, mothers have superpowers. My son fell off a wall once and hurt himself all over. I demanded someone bring me a computer so I could google what to do. My wife ignored me and did some sort of chanting phrase such as “Mummy kiss it better,” and cured 17 separate injuries in less than 15 seconds.

Yes, mothers are incredible people, but they are not always right. Yet honesty forces me to record the fact that mothers only know best 99.99 per cent of the time. Here are some famous slip-ups.

The mother of Bill Gates: “If you’re going to drop out of college and hang out with your nerdy friends, don’t come running to me when you find yourself penniless. ” The mother of Albert Einstein:揥hen you grow up, yous’ll find that sitting around thinking about the nature of time and space won’t pay the grocery bills.” The mother of George W. Bush: “You’ll never be like your dad, who became President of the United States and started his own war.”

Here is the list of my favorite comic books.

Sin City: The hard Goodbye by Frank Miller

I probably have read this comic book 30 times. I can easily say that Marv is my favorite comic book character. He is violent with a heart of gold. This story is so well written. As I was reading Marv getting closer to the truth about who was trying to frame (陷害) him, it was like watching a movie. The pace of the story was amazing and I really can not take my eyes off.

Akira by Katsuhiro Otomo

I saw the movie years before I could read the original work. After reading the original work, I realized that though the movie is great, the comic book is far better! In the comic book, it goes deeper into the Tetsuo character development and tells a lot more about the lady Mariko whom we barely see in the movie. My brother, who is not even a comic book reader, has read this 2500-page series twice.

The Ultimate Spider-Man by Mark Bagley and Michael Bendis

I was not even born when Spider-Man started making his first web. So Mark Bagley decided to revisit the web slinger for their younger audience. Michael Bendis did an amazing rewrite of the web slinger. In the rewritten version, Peter Parker didn’t grow up in the 1960s but born in the 21st century. And let me tell you, there is no rest for the Spider-Man in that comic book as he is fighting all his classic foes (敵人) .

Watchmen by Dave Gibbons and Alan Moore

Who is watching the watchmen? I love this line. The story takes place years after the watchmen used to watch over society. An old man is murdered. We learn shortly that he is a member of the watchmen. Rorchach thinks it is a conspiracy (陰謀) and that all the ex-members of the watchmen are in danger. But who is behind the conspiracy?

you want to read a story about a violent but kind-hearted man, you should read __________ .

A. The Ultimate Spider-Man B. Sin City: The hard Goodbye

C. Watchmen D. Akira

did the writer realize after reading the original work of Akira?

A. The story isn’t good enough to make a good movie.

B. It shouldn’t have been adapted for the big screen.

C. Many characters don’t show up in the movie.

D. It is much better than the movie version.

Ultimate Spider-Man came out mainly because __________ .

A. the former version wasn’t well written

B. younger audience were interested in the character

C. the publisher wanted to attract younger audience

D. Michael Bendis couldn’t make up any new stories

main purpose of the passage is to __________ .

A. advertise some comic books B. encourage us to read comic books

C. introduce four kinds of his favorite books D. show why comic books are fun to read
