01、歡迎來到資訊王

Dave: Welcome to InfoKing. I'm Dave. Looks like you've 1) inherited Bob's 2) cubicle.

【get to 影響,左右】

get to在對話中是指“影響,左右”,多半是指負面的情況:

A:The pressure has been really getting to me lately. 我最近真的被壓力壓得喘不過氣來。

B:Maybe you should take a vacation. 或許你該去度個假。

get to的另一個常見用法是“抵達”,這個短語在問路時很好用,相信大家也都不陌生:

A:How can I get to the train station? 我要怎麼才能到火車站?

B:It's around the corner and to the left. 它就在轉角那邊靠左側。

get to還有一個常見用法,意思是“得以,才能夠”:

A:How did you get to be a politician? 你是如何才得以當政治人物的?

【big time 超級,非常】

big time是在口語中常常可以聽到的短語,用來強調句中程度的高,意即“超級,非常”,可以當做副詞用:

A:I need to go to the bathroom, big time!

我得要上廁所,超急的!

B:There's a toilet over there. Why don't you go?

那裏就有廁所。你爲什麼不去?

也可以當做形容詞,寫做big-time:

A:She is a big-time movie producer!

她是個大牌的電影製片!

B:Really? Why haven't I heard of her before then?

真的?那怎麼我以前從沒聽說過她?

1) If you don't mind my asking. 若你不介意我問起的話。這是客氣的詢問句。要注意的是,mind 的後面要接動名詞;而若提到是誰問的,則要用所有格。

2) launch (n., v.) 事業登場,投入市場

03、此話怎講?

Zina: What do you mean? If he was a good programmer, he should have been 1) raking it in.

吉娜: 此話怎講?若他是個好的程序設計師,他應該早就發了。

Dave: The boss wanted to pay Bob with 2) stock options. But Bob didn't want to play that game again.

戴夫: 老闆想用認股權當作薪水付給鮑伯。可是鮑伯不想再次玩那種遊戲了。

【What do you mean?這話怎講?】

這是談話時較隨便的講法,照說應該是What do you mean by that? 另一個類似句型是What does the word mean?這個字作何解釋?mean 在這兩個句型的“意思、意表”解。

mean 也作“打算”解,須要注意的是後面只能接不定詞,不可接-ing式,例如:

Paul means to go to Taipei next week.

保羅打算下星期到臺北去。

A: What do you mean by sayingJudy is leaving the country.?

你說茱迪要出國是什麼意思?

B: Well, she means to accept a job offer in Singapore.

她打算要接受新加坡的一個工作機會。

Zina: Hi, boss. You wanted to see me?

吉娜: 嗨,老闆。你說要見我?

【look聽着】

很奇怪,怎麼英文的look會翻譯成中文的“聽着”?其實這正說明文化的差異。在英、美社會裏,要對方在意你即將說的話,最普遍的語詞是look,而我們在同樣情況下卻說“聽着”。

A:Look, I'll give you ten dollars if you sweep the room for me.

聽着,如果你幫我掃房間,我就給你十塊錢。

B:Sounds reasonable.

聽起來蠻合理的。

2) awkward (a.) 令人尷尬的的,感到尷尬的

05、我要提供你認股權

Vince: I want to 1) offer you more InfoKing stock options.

文斯: 我要提供你資訊王的認股權。

Zina: When you hired me, you knew you were going to be low on cash, didn't you?

吉娜: 你在僱用我的當時,就知道你會缺現金,對吧?

這裏的work不是指“工作”,而是指“事物運作的道理與規範”,類似於行規的概念:

A:I am afraid we are going to have to fire you.

【give away 送掉】

give away 這個短語看起來很簡單,不過有許多常用的意思,對話中所用到的give away 是指“贈送”。

A: Why did you give your bicycle away?

你爲何把你的腳踏車送掉了?

B: It's too old. I want to get a new one anyway.

那臺太老了。反正我要換新的。

1) offer (v.) 提供

2) venture (n.) 具冒險性的事業

3) capitalist (n.) 出資者,金主,capital 是“資金”。

4) profit (n.) 利潤

5) increase (v.) 增加

6) position (n.) 地位,此指“股權”。

06、我可不便宜

Zina: I'm not cheap.

吉娜: 我可不便宜。

Vince: I'm prepared to increase your 1) stake to three percent.

文斯: 我準備把你的股份增加至百分之三。

subscription 或其動詞subscribe 後面都要用介係詞to纔等於中文的訂閱,例如:

I renew my subscription to Time Express.

我續訂《時代雜誌中文版》。

A:Many of my friends subscribe to the evening newspaper.

我的許多朋友訂了那家晚報。

B:Why?

爲什麼?

A: Where should I put this picture of Fiona?

【It's seven-thirty. 七點半。】

在這個句型中,it指時間。雖然這句話也可以簡化爲Seven-thirty.但還是用原句型較爲適當。

it除了指時間以外,也用於指天氣或距離,例如:

It's very hot today.

今天天氣很熱。

It's about 400 kilometers from Taipei to Kenting.

從臺北到墾丁大約400公里。

A:How far is it from here to Hualien?

從這裏到花蓮有多遠?

B:It's about 150 kilometers.

大約150公里。

A:How is the weather like down there?

那裏天氣怎麼樣?

B:It's raining at the moment.

此刻正在下雨。

2) pull an all-nighter 開夜車,熬夜

5) rhumba (n.) 倫巴舞

6) admirer (n.) 仰慕者,secret admirer 是“暗戀者”。

08、我受不了電腦怪胎

Dave: Whoa. Now I'm awake! Zina has a secret admirer.

戴夫: 哇。這會我可醒了!吉娜有暗戀者了。

Zina: I really do not have time to deal with some 1) lovesick computer 2) geek.

stand這個字大家一定都知道,但它除了“站”這個意思之外,最常用的就是指“忍受”,可以用在人身上:

A: Allison is my best friend.

愛麗森是我最好的朋友。

B: I can't stand her. She is so fake!

我受不了她。她好假喔!

也可以用在事物身上:

A: It must be 45 degrees in here.

這裏一定有四十五度。

B: I can't stand it anymore. It's too hot!

我再也受不了了。有夠熱的!

用來表示動作也行:

A: Let's go have a beer at Tom's.

我們去湯姆的店喝啤酒。

B: I can't stand to go there. It reminds me of my ex-girlfriend.

【Save it. 你省省吧。】

save是“存,省下”的意思,而Save it.在對話中用做短句,意思是“省省吧。”,告訴對方多說無益。而save it for的句型也很常用,意思是“替……預留”,請看以下的實際例子:

A:I wasn't drinking, officer; I just didn't see the red light.

警官,我沒有喝酒;我只是沒看到紅燈。

B:Save it for the judge.

這些話你留着去跟法官說吧。

A:I love this movie! I want to watch it, too.

B:OK. I'll save it for tonight when you get home from work.

tough 這個字,指的是“強悍的”,若要說“對……很強悍、強硬”就是be tough with...,對話中用了act這個字,act tough with聽來的感覺傾向於“故意裝得很強硬”。

A: I'm so angry. I could hit you in the face.

我好生氣。我真想揍你的臉。

B: Don't you act so tough with me. I know you couldn't hurt a fly.

你別跟我故作強硬。我知道你連只蒼蠅都捨不得殺。

【get it to work 讓它運作】

work這個句型,若是用在事物身上,是指“讓……能夠運作”,可能是指草創的新東西,或是某個窒礙難行的制度,也可以單純指東西壞了:

A: My car broke down again.

我的車又壞了。

B: I bet I can get it to work. Where is it?

我打賭能讓它上路。車子在哪裏?

1) what if... 萬一,要是……

2) online (a.) 連上電腦網路的,線上的

3) keep track of... 隨時掌握……

4) traffic (n.) 此指“網站的流量”

5) site (n.)“網站”,即website

11、你要知道動機何在嗎?

Zina: Do you want to know what really 1) motivates Vince to be nice to me?

吉娜: 你要知道文斯對我好的動機何在嗎?

Dave: OK. What?

【nice to me 對我好】

nice to 後面接“人”時,表示“友善、隨和”的意思,例如:

Grandma was nice to me when I visited her.

我去探望祖母時她對我很友善。

We should all be nice to the new-comer.

我們應該對那位新來的人客氣些。

在英文中談論可能的情態助動詞(modals)有好幾個,包括might, could, may, must。大致上,might表示的可能是最低,而must最高。

Tina might be sick.(少於50%可能)

Tina could be sick.(約50%可能)

Tina may be sick. (約50%可能)

Tina must be sick. (約90%可能)

1) motivate (v.) 給……動機

2) gratitude (n.) 感激

3) jump to... 換(公司),尤指違反合約的情況。

4) competitor (n.)競爭者

5) account (n.) 客戶,尤指生意上往來的客戶。

12、這是生意經

Zina: My accounts go where I go. Vince knows that.

吉娜: 我到哪裏,客戶就跟到哪。文斯知道的。

談話中對方提到某種想法或動作,而你要表示同感時常會用到這個句型,要注意助動詞do要置於主詞 I 之前。類似的句型還有So am I.也表示“我也是”。

使用So do I 或So am I 取決於對方是否使用be動詞,使用be 動詞則用So am I,其他動詞則用So do I. 。

A: I want to find out where John is.

我想要找出約翰到底在哪裏。

B: So do I.

我也是。

A: I'm anxious to know if I'm admitted to the college.

我急於想知道我是否被那所大學錄取了。

B: So am I.

我也是。

這是所謂附加疑問句,是添加在句末的問句,是爲了確定自己訊息正確或爲了得到對方的贊同。肯定附加疑問句希望得到否定回答,否定附加疑問句希望獲得肯定回答。

A: This is the book that you want,isn't it?

這是你要的那本書,不是嗎?

B: Yes, it is.

正是。

A: You don't like coffee, do you?

你不喜歡咖啡,是嗎?

B: No, I don't.

stop by是指你在要去一個地方的途中,因爲順路而到某人家拜訪:

A:I was going to the store and thought I would stop by.

我正要去店裏,就想可以順道過來。

stop by也可以用來表達“稍作停留,不會久留”的意思:
