In the Spring and Autumn Period (春秋時期,770-476 BC), King Jing of the State of Jin (晉國) fell ill. And he heard that there was a doctor of exceptionalskill, so he dispatchedperson to invite the doctor.

春秋時期,晉景公有一次得了重病,聽說秦國有一個醫術很高明的醫生,便專程派人去請來。

One night he dreamed that the disease turned into two little kids talking beside him.

有一晚,晉景公恍惚中做了個夢。夢見了兩個小孩,正悄悄地在他身旁說話。

One said, “I’m afraid the doctor will hurt us.”

一個說:“那個高明的醫生馬上就要來了,我看我們這回難逃了,我們躲到什麼地方去呢?”

The other said, “Do not worry. We can hide above ‘huang’ and below ‘gao’. Then the doctor will be able to do nothing to us.”

另一個小孩說道:“這沒什麼可怕的,我們躲到肓的上面,膏的下面,無論他怎樣用藥,都奈何我們不得。”

The next day, having examined the king, the doctor said, ‘Your disease is incurable, I am afraid, Your Majesty. It’ above huang and below gao, where no medicine can reach.’

翌日,秦國的名醫到了,立刻被請進了晉景公的臥室替晉景公治病。診斷後,那醫生對晉景公說:“這病已沒辦法治了。疾病在肓之上,膏之下,用灸法攻治不行,扎針又達不到,吃湯藥,其效力也達不到。這病是實在沒法子治了。”

The idiom indicates a hopeless condition.

這個成語意喻事情到了無可挽回的地步。

In the Eastern Han Dynasty (東漢), there was a man named Chen Shi (陳寔) .

在東漢初年,有個人叫陳寔。

One day, a thief slippedinto his living-room. Hiding behind the beam, the thief waited for Chen Shi to fall asleep.

有一天,一個小賊溜進了他的房間,躲在房樑上等着陳寔去睡覺再下手。

Chen Shi, finding the thief, called his family together, saying, "To be a uprightman one must have aspirations. Men are not born evil. But if one gets used to doing evil things, it will be hard to reform. The gentleman above the beamis such a man."

陳寔發現了小偷,把他的家人都召集在一起,說:“人不可以不自強。人不是天生就壞的,壞習慣往往是由不注意自身品性修養所致的。咱家房樑上這個人就是這樣。”

The thief, hearing this, hurriedlyjumped down and knelt on the ground to beg forgiveness.

小偷聽到這話,從房樑上跳到地上,跪在陳寔面前,請求原諒,決心做個有用的人。

This idiom is used to refer to a thief.

這個成語用來比喻小偷。

In the Warring States Period(戰國), Duke Wei of Qi neglectedstate affairs, for the first three years of his reign, giving himself over to dissipation.

戰國時期,齊威王繼承王位已有三年了,可是他整天飲酒作樂,不理朝政。

One of his minister, Chun Yukun(chn y kūn)who had a good senseof humor, said to him:”There is a big bird which has never taken wing nor sung for three Highness, may you guess what kind of bird is it?”

有一個大臣叫淳于髡,很有幽默感,對齊威王說:“臣聽說齊國有一隻大鳥,三年來不飛也不叫,大王知道這是一隻什麼鳥?”

The dukeanswered, “Once that bird starts to fly and sing, it will astonishthe world.”

(其實淳于髡是暗喻齊威王)齊威王答道:“一旦這隻鳥開始飛翔高歌,必然震驚世界。”

The duke then devoted himself to his duties and built his state up into a powerfulone.

從此齊威王勤於朝政,勵精圖治,國威大振。

This idiom is used to indicate that a personmay rise from obscurityand achievegreatness.

成語“一鳴驚人”比喻平時默默無聞或是無所作爲,但一旦認真起來,便一下子幹出一番驚人的事來。
