Apple supplier Hon Hai has chalked up its first fall in revenues in more than two decades on the back of the drop in iPhone sales last year.

Taiwan-based Hon Hai, also known as Foxconn, said that annual sales fell 2.8 per cent to NT$4.36tn ($137bn). It is the contract manufacturer’s first fall in revenues since 1994, according to Bloomberg data.

Apple, which accounts for about half of Hon Hai’s sales, said that sales dropped by 7.7 per cent in the year to September 2016, the first decline in 15 years and a sharp reversal from the 27.9 per cent growth rate the year before. Smartphone growth is stalling more broadly while Chinese manufacturers — which are less reliant on third party contractors such as Hon Hai — are taking market share from Apple and Samsung.

Hon Hai’s drop in revenues — profit numbers were not disclosed — comes as the manufacturer ploughs billions of dollars into Sharp, the Japanese electronics maker it bought last year.

Last March it agreed to pay ¥388.8bn ($3.7bn) for a two-thirds stake in Sharp, giving the Apple assembler a century-old electronics brand and the technology know-how that pioneered solar panels and liquid crystal displays (LCDs).

Plans include buying back licensing rights in an attempt to rebuild the Sharp TV brand and an $8.8bn factory in China to manufacture LCDs.

Atul Goyal, technology analyst at Jefferies, questioned the logic of some of these efforts, pointing to over-capacity in the LCD market at a time when smartphone makers are starting to look instead at alternative OLED screens, which is championed by South Korean companies such as LG Display.

“They are spending $8.8bn building capacity for LCD panels in China. This industry is already in excess, and they are building more.”

Japan Display, another Apple supplier and backer of LCDs, last month received $640m in financial aid from a government-backed fund in a bid to strengthen its position in the latest OLED screen technology.
