The day is cold,and dark,and dreary;

It rains,and the wind is never weary;

The vine still clings to the moldering wall,

But at every gust the dead leaves fall,

And the day is dark and dreary.

My life is cold and dark and dreary;

My though still cling to the moldering past,

But the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast,

And the days are dark and dreary.

Be still,sad heart!And cease repining;

Behind the clouds is the sun still shining;

天冷、陰暗、沉悶;

下着雨，風也刮個不停;

藤還攀附着頹垣殘壁，

每來一陣狂風，枯葉附落紛紛，

天真是陰暗而沉悶。

我的生活寒冷、陰鬱、沉悶;

我的思想還糾纏着消逝的往事，

The man who is aware of himself is henceforth independent;

and he is never bored, and life is only too short,

and he is steeped through and hrough with profound yet temperate happiness.

Healone lives, while other people, slaves of ceremony, let life slip past time in a kind of dream.

Once conform ,once do what other people do finer than they do it,

and a lethargy steals over all the finer nerves and faculties of the soul,

He becomes all outer show and inward emptiness; dull, callous, and indifferent.

凡是意識到自我的人從今往後纔是獨立的;

他永遠不知疲倦，他明白生命苦短，

所以完全沉浸於深深的而又適度的幸福之中。

他獨立生活，而別人是繁文縟節的奴隸，在醉生夢死之中聽從生命悄然流逝。

一旦循規蹈矩，一旦人爲亦爲，呆滯就籠罩着靈魂中一切靈敏的神經和官能。

靈魂變得徒有其表，其中空空;遲鈍，木然、冷漠。
