倫敦橋是泰晤士河上資格最老的橋，公元965年建成。第一條倫敦橋是木質構造，兩千年前(50AD)的羅馬時期就有了。不過這條橋很短命，五年後就毀於戰亂。第二條橋是磚建的，1014年被侵略英國的維京王Olaf拆毀。目的是將英國一分爲二，阻斷兩地的交通。這首歌據說就是當時開始流傳開來的。兩個世紀後改爲石橋，現代所見的倫敦橋已經是第三個改建版本，1973年落成，其實只是在同一位置用同一個名字而已。
