Duanwu Festival (端午節,Duānwū Jié) is a traditional Chinese festival held onthe fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese is also known as theDouble Fifth.[citation(引用;引證) needed] It has since been celebrated,in variousways,in other parts of East Asia as the West,it's commonly known asDragon Boat Festival.

The exact origins of Duan Wu are unclear,but one traditional view holdsthat the festival memorializes the Chinese poet Qu Yuan (c.340 BC-278 BC) of theWarring States committed suicide by drowning himself in a riverbecause he was disgusted by the corruption of the Chu localpeople,knowing him to be a good man,decided to throw food into the river to feedthe fish so they would not eat Qu's also sat on long,narrow paddleboats called dragon boats,and tried to scare the fish away by the thunderingsound of drums aboard the boat and the fierce looking carved dragon head on theboat's prow(船頭).

In the early years of the Chinese Republic,Duan Wu was also celebrated as"Poets' Day," due to Qu Yuan's status as China's first poet of personalrenown(名聲名望).

Today,people eat bamboo-wrapped steamed glutinous(粘的) rice dumplings calledzongzi (the food originally intended to feed the fish) and race dragon boats inmemory of Qu's dramatic death.

The Chinese Dragon Boat Festival is a significant (有意義的)holiday celebrated(慶祝)in China, and the one with the longest history (歷史最悠久). The Dragon BoatFestival is celebrated by boat races (龍舟賽) in the shape of dragons. Competingteams (競爭團隊) row their boats forward to a drumbeat (擊古)racing to reach thefinish end first.

The boat races during the Dragon Boat Festival are traditional customs(傳統習俗)to attempts to (試圖)rescue (搭救) the patriotic poet (愛國詩人)Chu Yuan. Chu Yuandrowned (溺死) on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month in 277 B.C. Chinesecitizens now throw bamboo leaves (竹葉) filled with cooked rice into the efore the fish could eat the rice rather than the hero poet. This later onturned into the custom of eating tzungtzu and rice dumplings(棕子).

The celebration's is a time for protection (防護) from evil (邪惡) and disease(疾病) for the rest of the year. 農曆五月初五爲端午節,又稱端陽節、午日節、五月節、艾節、端五、重午、午日、夏節。雖然名稱不同,但各地人民過節的習俗是相同的。端午節是我國二千多年的舊習俗,每到這一天,家家戶戶掛艾葉菖蒲,賽龍舟,吃糉子,飲雄黃酒,遊百病,佩香囊。

今天是端午節,大家知道端午節的來歷嗎?!不知道吧!那就讓我來告訴你們吧!你們還記得楚國那位愛國大將屈原嗎?我來說一說他吧!

屈原是戰國時期出國人,很有學問。他在楚王身邊做官,以形象是自己的國家富強起來。昏君楚王卻聽信奸臣的話,把屈原削職流放。在流放中,屈原聽說楚國的都城被敵人佔領,百姓遭難,悲憤極了。五月初五這一天,他來到汨羅江邊,懷抱一塊石頭,以縱身跳入汨羅江中。出國的百姓聽到屈原投江的消息,都十分悲痛。他們含着淚划着船趕來打撈屈原,還把糉子扔到江裏餵魚,希望魚兒不要傷害屈原的身體。這就是五月端陽包糉子的來歷。

端午節還有許多有趣的活動。列如賽龍舟,掛香囊,香囊內有硃砂、雄黃、香藥,外包以絲布,清香四溢,再以五色絲線弦扣成索,作各種不同形狀,結成一串,形形色色,玲瓏奪目。還有掛艾葉、菖蒲的習慣。
