The only problem unconsciously assumed by all Chinese philosophers to be ofany importance is: How shall we enjoy life, and who can best enjoy life? Noperfectionism, no straining after the unattainable, no postulating of heunknowable; but taking poor, modal human nature as it is, how shall we organizeour life so that we can woke peacefully, endure nobly and live happily?

Who are we? That is first question. It is a question almost impossible toanswer. But we all agree with the busy self occupied in our daily activities isnot quite the real self. We are quite sure we have lost something in the merepursuit of living. When we watch a person running about looking for something ina field, the wise man can set a puzzle for all the spectator to solve: what hasthat person lost? Some one thinks is a watch; another thinks it is a diamondbrooch; and others will essay other guesses. After all the guesses have failed, the wise man who really doesn't know what the person is seeking after, tells thecompany:" I'll tell you. He has lost some breath." And no one can deny that heis right. So we often forget our true self in the pursuit of living, like a birdforgetting its own danger in pursuit of a mantis which again forgets its owndanger in pursuit of another.

No living creature can laugh except man. Trees may bleed when they arewounded, and beasts in the field will cry in pain and hunger, yet only I havethe gift of laughter and it is mine to use whenever I choose. Henceforth I willcultivate the habit of laughter. I will smile and my digestion will improve; Iwill chuckle and my burdens will be lightened; I will laugh and my life will belengthened for this is the great secret of long life and now it is mine.

I will paint this day with laughter; I will frame this night in song. Neverwill I labor to be happy; rather will I remain too busy to be sad. I will enjoytoday's happiness today. It is not grain to be stored in a box. It is not wineto be saved in a jar. It cannot be saved for the morrow. It must be sown andreaped on the same day and this I will do, henceforth.

And with my laughter all things will be reduced to their proper size. Iwill laugh at my failures and they will vanish in clouds of new dreams; I willlaugh at my successes and they will shrink to their true value. I will laugh atevil and it will die untasted; I will laugh at goodness and it will thrive andabound. Each day will be triumphant only when my smiles bring forth smiles fromothers and this l do in selfishness, for those on whom l flown are those whopurchase not my goods.

Indeed, for a living being there is no such thing as true silence, forsilence itself is a revelation of the mind and the heart, an echo of the soul ofa different form.

Some people use silence as a disguise of the emptiness of the head.

Some use it as a means to depict their disorientation and melancholy.

And some use it as a way of expressing their angers and sorrows.

...

Silence usually is ephemeral. It reminds one of the bronze bells danglingfrom a pagoda's eaves; on windless days they are a decoration upon theage-weathered beauty, but with wind they give out wonderful tinkling andjingling metallurgic sounds, as if echoing age-old stories of long, longago...

Do you not think the same of silent people?

They say that "silence is golden", but of what nature is this "gold"? Itcan include integrity, honesty and kindness; it can stand for indifference toand detachment from fame and fortune; but it can also act as an excuse forhypocrisy, slyness and cowardice... the glittering of gold may not necessarilybe the most brilliant lustre in the world.

Can it be that permanent silence is only represented by death?

Perhaps even death cannot represent true silence, for the carrier of thesoul can turn into dust, so that the sincere and wise voices from the bottom ofthe heart will trigger long-lasting echoes in the seas of human hearts...

When someone looks into your eyes they should see something alive withinyou. Having a dream is like owning a lighthouse1 which directs you on yourjourney.

At every turn we come across its mystery. At each new level we become moreof the person we were meant to become. In lonely times, when we pass through astorm of disappointment, we find our faith is unshaken, our strength stillstrong.

Believe in your faith. Set the vision before your eyes. Write down yourmost sincere dreams and when the opportunity comes, step into your dream. It maytake one season or more, but the result is the same. Make big dreams and then goout and make them realities. The highest hopes of the dreamer are revealed withevery step taken in their journey to the impossible. For a season we mustprotect the dream so that it can grow quietly on the inside. But if we tenderlycare for our deepest expectations, slowly but surely the dream will become newlife.

Dreaming is an act of faith. The light of your expectations will cast offthe shadows of a disbelieving world. God has given us the dreamer as a gift tolight an unbelieving world.

Find your treasure within and cherish2 it. Tomorrow is waiting for you totake the first step.
