Itwas a village in India. The people were poor. However, they were not r All, their forefathers had lived in the same way for centuries.

Thenone day, some visitors from the city arrived. They told the villagers there weresome people elsewhere who liked to eat frog's legs. However, they did not haveenough frogs of their own ,and so they wanted to buy frogs from otherplaces.

Thisseemed like Money for nothing. There were millions of frogs in the fieldsaround, and they were no use to the villagers. All they had to do was catch ement was reached, and the children were sent into the fields to catch y week a truck arrived to collect the catch and hand over the money. For thefirst time, the people were able to dream of a better future. But the dreamdidn't last long.

Thechange was hardly noticed at first, but it seemed as if the crops were not doingso well. More worrying was that the children fell ill more often, and, thereseemed to be more insects around lately.

Thevillagers decided that they couldn't just wait to see the crops failing and thechildren getting weak. They would have to use the money earned to buy pesticides(殺蟲劑) and medicines. Soon there was no money left.

Thenthe people realized what was happening. It was the frog. They hadn't beenuseless. They had been doing an important job—eating insects. Now with so manyfrogs killed, the insects were increasing more rapidly. They were damaging thecrops and spreading diseases.

Now,thepeople are still poor. But in the evenings they sit in the village square andlisten to sounds of insects and frogs. These sounds of the night now have a muchdeeper meaning.

Somalipirates (海盜) robbed three Thai fishing ships with 77 sailors on board nearly1,200 miles off the Somali coast, the farthest-off-shore attack to date, anofficer said Tuesday.

Pirateshave gone farther south and east in answer to increased patrols(巡邏) by warshipsoff the Somali shore. The robbing of the three ships Sunday was about 600 milesoutside the normal operation area for the international force, said aspokesman.

Thespokesman said the attack so far out at sea was a clear sign that theinternational patrols against pirates were having a “marked effect on pirateactivity in the area”.

“Oncethey start attacking that far out, you're not even really talking about theSomali basin or areas of water that have any connection with Somalia.” said anofficer, Roger Middleton. “Once you're that far out, it's just the IndianOcean, and it means you're looking at trade going from the Gulf to Asia, fromAsia to South Africa.”

“Thisis the farthest robbing to date. They are now operating near the Maldives andIndia.” said another officer.

Thethree ships-the MV Prantalay 11,12,and 14-had 77 members on board in total. Allof them are Thai, the spokesman said. Before the Sunday robbing, pirates held 11ships and 228 sailors.

Pirateshave increased attacks over the past year in hopes of catching more dollarpayments. Because of increased patrols and defenses on board ships, the successrate(率) has gone down, though the number of successful attacks has stayed thesame year over year.

第一段中有“Thepeople were ver, they were not unhappy.”

根據第二段的“Thisseemed like money for nothing.”

根據倒數第二段中“Theyhad been doing an important job—eating insects. Now with so many frogs killed, the insects were increasing more rapidly. They were damaging the crops andspreading diseases.”

“Therobbing of the three ships Sunday was about 600 miles outside the normaloperation area for the international force”以及“Once you're that far out, it'sjust the IndianOcean...”

依據nternational patrols against pirates were having a “marked effect on pirateactivity in the area”及Once you're that far out, it's just the Indian Ocean, andit means you're looking at trade going from the Gulf to Asia, from Asia to SouthAfrica.

由文章首句“Somalipirates robbed three Thai fishing ships with 77 sailors on board...”及“Before theSunday robbing, pirates held 11 ships and 228sailors.”
