People aren’t walking any more---if they can figure out a way to avoid it.

I felt superior about this matter until the other day I took my car to mail a small parcel. The journey is a matter of 281 steps. But I used the car. And I wasn’t in any hurry, either. I had merely become one more victim of a national sickness: motorosis.

It is an illness to which I had thought myself immune(免疫的), for I was born in the tradition of going to places on my own two legs. At that time, we regarded 23 miles a good day’s walk and the ability to cover such a distance in ten hours a sign of strength and skill. It did not occur to us that walking was a hardship. And the effect was lasting. When I was 23 years old, I raced, and beat a teenage football player the 168 steps up the Stature of Liberty.

Such enterprises today are regarded by many middle-aged persons as bad for the heart. But a well-known British physician, Sir Adolphe Abrahams, pointed out recently that hearts and bodies need proper exercise. A person who avoids exercise is more likely to have illnesses than one who exercises regularly. And walking is an ideal form of exercise--- the most familiar and natural of all.

It was Henry Thoreau who showed mankind the richness of going on foot. The man walking can learn about trees, flowers, insects, birds and animals, the significance of seasons, and the very feel of himself as a living creature in a living world. He cannot learn in a car.

The car is a convenient means of transport, but we have made it our way of life. Many people don’t dare to approach nature any more; to them the world they were born to enjoy is all threat. To them security is a steel river thundering on a concrete road. And much of their thinking takes place while waiting for the traffic light to turn green.

I say that the green of forests is the mind’s best light. And none but the man on foot can evaluate what is basic and everlasting.

Teary Joe was a boy with a special ability: he could make himself cry in less than a second. If he disliked something, or things became difficult, Teary Joe would not hesitate to put on a pitiful face and set great big tears running down his cheeks. In this way he managed to get practically everything he wanted, because no one could resist the pity inspired by his tearful little face.

But one day, Teary Joe met Pipo. Pipo was asking people in the street for some change, in return for him helping them in any way he could. Pipo was very poor; he had no home and no family, so he made a living however he could. Even so, Pipo always had the biggest smiles on his face.

Joe took to Pipo, so he decided to help him out in making some money. He went over next to Pipo, took off his hat, put it face-up on the ground, and started crying with the most pitiful of expressions. In a few minutes, Joe’s hat was full of coins and sweets, but when Joe offered all this to Pipo, Pipo declined. “I prefer deserving what I receive,” answered Pipo with his usual smile, “It’s much more fun making an effort to get things. Maybe I haven’t gotten everything I’ve wanted, but I’ve done a load of interesting things.” Teary Joe didn’t answer; he just walked sadly away. Joe had got everything he wanted, but he’d done practically nothing of interest the whole day.

That evening, having returned home, Joe requested a delicious cake for his supper. When his mother said no, Joe tried to cry but, remembering Pipo and how joyful he was, he tried to get the cake in some other way. Joe spent the whole evening helping his mother to water the plants and organize the library books.

In the end there was no cake. But that wasn’t so bad, because Joe discovered it had been much more fun doing all those things that evening rather than just sitting crying to get a piece of cake that, in the end, wouldn’t have been worth it.

C. He built up true friendship with Pipo. D. He was greatly influenced by Pipo.

Filmmaker Jennifer Nelson had to pay $1,300 to have “Happy Birthday to You” sung in the movie she’s making. The money went to Warner Music Group, a company that claims to own the copyright on the song. A copyright is the legal right to use or sell a creative product such as a song, a TV show, a book, or a work of art. Warner has claimed the copyright for “Happy Birthday to You” since 1988.

“I never thought the song was owned by anyone,” Nelson said in an e-mail to The New York Times. “I thought it belonged to everyone.”

Nelson’s movie is a documentary — a film that uses pictures and/or interviews with people to create a factual report of real-life events — and is actually about the history of the “Happy Birthday” song itself.

Two sisters named Mildred and Patty Hill wrote a song called “Good Morning to All” in 1893. Over a short period of time, people began to sing the words “happy birthday to you” in place of the original lyrics to the tune of the Hill sisters’ song.

A number of history experts say that there is no record of who actually wrote the “Happy Birthday to You” lyrics. Historians also say there is no way to know when the general public began singing the “Happy Birthday” song, but they believe it was being sung by the public long before it was printed and owned by a company.

Nelson’s lawyers say this piece of music’s history proves that “Happy Birthday to You” belongs to everyone in the general public. That would mean Warner Music Group has no right to charge anyone a fee to sing the song in any setting.

Experts estimate that Warner/ Chappell, the publishing division of the Warner Music Group, has made about $2 million a year from licensing fees for “Happy Birthday to You.”

Nelson’s lawyers are asking a court in New York City to order Warner/Chappell to return fees they have collected over the past four years for use of the “Happy Birthday” song.

12. Jennifer Nelson had to pay Warner Music Group to ____________.

A. own the copyright on a song B. have a song sung in her movie

C. have it play a song in her movie D. have it write a song for her movie

13. The history experts’ statement can prove that the “Happy Birthday” song ____________.

A. has always been very popular B. has more than 200 years’ history

C. does not belong to Warner Music Group D. was initially owned by another company

14 . According to Nelson’s lawyers, to sing the “Happy Birthday” song, people ____________.

A. should pay the Hill sisters B. need not pay for any purpose

C. should pay Warner Music Group D. need not pay except for commercial use

15. If the court supports Nelson’s lawyers’ claim, ____________.

A. Warner will return about $8 million

B. she can obtain the copyright on the song

C. Warner will have to pay her for her damages

D. she only needs to pay a little money to use the song

第二節(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)根據短文內容, 從短文後的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項,並在答題卡上將該項塗黑。選項中有兩項爲多餘選項。

Kids have the reputation of being picky eaters. Trying to encourage your kids to eat a bit more healthily can be difficult. The following ways may be helpful.

Get rid of the junk. Adults do the grocery shopping, so if the cabinets are filled with chips, sugary cereals, ice cream, soda, fatty meat and pastries, it is due to the adults in the household. 16 If children have healthy food in the house, that is what they will eat.

Be a good role model. It is not news that kids model behavior after their parents——even starting during infancy(嬰兒期). 17

18 Many families do not eat meals together——especially dinner. With busy work schedules, sports or music practice and endless homework, it can be difficult to find time to eat together. However, studies show that when families eat together, children eat better.

19 Studies have shown that if you allow your kids to get involved in the choosing, preparing and cooking of foods, they are more likely to choose healthy and nutritious foods.

No more special “kids meals”. 20 In some cases, parents try to customize (定製) the dinner for each child! But this sort of accommodation teaches kids that they do not have to try something new or different——instead, they will get what they know they will like.

A. Eat meals together.

B. Get everyone involved in cooking healthy meals.

C. It is thus the job of the adults to provide healthy and wholesome food.

D. Everyone’s taste is different, so it is difficult to cook a meal that suits everyone’s appetite.

E. Some parents get into the habit of essentially preparing two meals: one for the adults, and one for the kids.

F. Use this opportunity to demonstrate a good attitude and good eating behaviors for your children to imitate.

G. This approach avoids power struggles over dinner by setting up a system in which the child is not forced to eat anything.

When I woke up, I saw him stood(standing) beside me. I thanked for(去掉for) him. That man was a hero.

Dear Lora,

I have just read your letter in that magazine. I know that you must be upset because of the present situation. But things are not so bad as you imagine. Just cheer up!

Your parents won’t allow you to take part-time jobs probably because they consider study as your most important task. After all, the college entrance examination next year is crucial to your future. Moreover, they may think you are too young to work.

I suggest you have a talk with your parents so that they can be better informed of the benefits of doing part-time jobs. Besides, you can make a detailed plan of your work and study so as to convince them that you are old enough to manage things by yourself. (116)

Anyway, I do wish you a pleasant holiday.

Yours ,

Li Hua
