在日常英語中，大家都知道這個詞表示“思考，思索”，比如：

This is the method that we have been speculating about.

這正是我們一直在思考的方法。

但是在商務英語中，它的意思卻是“投機、買空賣空”，比如：

to speculate on the futures 搞期貨投機生意

stocks speculate 股票投資

它的名詞形式是speculation，比如：

speculation on foreign exchange 外匯投機

He made money in estate speculation. 

他靠房地產投機發了財。
