舊金山居民民族構成複雜，其中非白種人約佔總人口2/5以上，以黑人、華人、日本人、菲律賓人居多。來自世界各地的移民分區而居，形成語言文化、風俗習慣和宗教禮儀迥異的社區。如市中心黑人聚居的菲爾莫爾區，華人集中的"中國城"，以及小大膠區(日本人)、卡尼區(菲律賓人)、北灘拉丁區(意大利人)、俄羅斯山區(墨西哥人)、薩特里-菲爾莫爾區(俄羅斯人)等。
