Children’s performance at school is more dependent on the area in which they grow up than parental income, a new study suggests.

The research found that in 2013-14, 70 per cent of 16-year-olds in London gained five good GCSEs compared with 63 per cent in Yorkshire and Humber, with such inequalities persisting - and in some cases worsening - over the past three decades.
