研究:久居北方的人壽命更短?

According to a recent research, living in the North means you are 20 percent more likely to die prematurely than those in the South. An editorial in the British Medical Journal claims that those living in northern England are a fifth more likely to die under the age of 75 and the figure has "changed little between 1965 and 2008."

Experts analyzed trends for English government office regions, comparing the North with the South. They looked at the North East, North West, Yorkshire and the Humber, East Midlands and West Midlands compared with the East of England, London, the South East and South West.

The number of excess deaths among all age groups has been 14 percent higher in the North than in the South over the past four decades, according to the research. Inequality has been greater for men (15 percent) than for women (13 percent).

研究發現,40年來,北方地區各年齡段非正常死亡案例數目比南方多出了14%。比起女性羣體,這種死亡數目的差異在男性羣體中更明顯(北方男性非正常死亡案例數目比南方高15%,女性羣體中則爲13%)。

In the editorial, Margaret Whitehead, of the University of Liverpool, and Tim Doran, of the University of Manchester, call for "a national overview" of access to NHS (National Health Service) services for different communities."Otherwise, the result could be chaos and an even wider health divide," they warn.
