The old man and Death

老人與死神

An old man was gathering sticks in a forest.

有個老人在森林中砍了不少柴，十分吃力地挑着走了很遠的路。

At last he grew very tired and hopeless. He threw down All the sticks and cried out, "I cannotbear this life any longer. Ah, I wish Death would come and take me!"

一路上他累極了，實在挑不動了，便扔下柴擔，叫喊起來：“這種日子我受不了了，死神啊，帶我走吧。”

As he spoke, Death appeared, and said to him, "What would you do, old man? I heard you call me."

這時，死神來了，對他說：“老頭，你想做什麼，我聽見你叫我?”

"Please, sir," replied the old man, "would you help me lift this bundle of sticks up to myshoulder?"

“先生，”老人說，“您能幫忙將那擔子放在我的肩上嗎?”

The wind and the sun

風和太陽

The wind and the sun were disputing who was the stronger.

風和太陽兩方爲誰的能量大相互爭論不休。

Suddenly they saw a traveler coming down the road. The sun said, "Whoever can make the traveler take off his coat will be the stronger."

突然，他們看到一個行人走在路上，太陽說：“誰能使行人脫下衣服，誰就更強大。”

So the sun hid behind a cloud, and the wind began to blow as hard as it could. As the wind blew harder, the traveler wrapped his coat more closely around himself.

太陽藏在烏雲後面，風開始拼命地吹，風颳得越猛烈，行人越是裹緊自己的衣服。

Then the sun came out. He shone on the traveler. The traveler soon felt quite hot, and took off his coat.

太陽出來了，暖暖地曬着行人，行人感到很熱，很快就把外套脫了下來。

鷹和箭

An eagle was flying in the sky. As soon as it saw a rabbit, it swoopeddown on its prey.

Suddenly it was hit by an arrow.

突然，有人一箭射中了它。

It fluttered slowly down to the earth, and blood was pouring from the wound.

When the eagle looked down, he found that the shaft of the arrow was feathered with one of its own plumes.“Alas!”it cried.“We often give our enemies the means for our owndestruction.”
