In the fields, there was a small animal called "wu shu" (the flying squirrel).

It would say to everyone it met:

"I have five skills: flying, walking, swimming, climbing trees, and digging holes in the ground."

Thereupon, its pals would laugh at it, saying:

"Though you have learned these skills, you have mastered none of them."

"You can fly, but not high; you can swim, but not far; you can climb trees, but not to the treetop;

“會飛,卻飛得不高;會游泳,卻遊得不遠;會爬樹,卻爬不到樹頂;

you can dig holes in the ground, but not deep enough."

When the flying squirrel heard what its pals said, it ran away manger.

Indeed, the flying squirrel had learned five skills, but when put to use, they were useless.

How could they be called real skills?

Once upon a time, there was a young girl wearing a strand of precious pearls around her neck and a jade loop around her waist,

and carrying a great deal of gold with her.

One day, while walking in the hills, she encountered a bandit and was very much frightened.

When the bandit saw the gold, silver and other treasures, an evil thought occurred to him.

Holding a weapon in his hand, he intended to rob her.

The young girl was scared out of her wits.

Trembling all over and not daring to look at him squarely in the face,

she quickly bent and knelt down before the bandit, begging him piteously, and saying that she was even willing to marry him to be his concubine.

Yet, the atrocious bandit still killed her in the end.

It is thus clear that one should never expect mercy from a bandit.

There was a man named Cao Shang in the State of Song.

Once, he was sent on a mission by the King of Song to the State of Qin.

Before departure, the King of Song bestowed upon him several horse-drawn chariots.

Upon arriving in the State of Qin, Cao Shang won the favour of the King of Qin.

Consequently, the King bestowed upon him 100 chariots.

Soon afterwards, Cao Shang returned to the State of Song.

One day he met Zhuang Zi and said proudly:"In the past, I lived in poor streets and humblealleys.

I was very poor, and made my living by making shoes.

I was sallow and thin.

This was my weak point.

Now, relying on my clever tongue, I have touched the heart of the King of Qin, who is thesovereign lord with 1,000 chariots.

He bestowed upon me 100 chariots. This is my strong point."

When Zhuang Zi heard this, he gave a snort of contempt and said sarcastically:

"I heard that the King of Qin was ill.

He let the physicians treat him, and rewarded them according to their contributions:

those who sucked pus and ate sores would get 1 horse-drawn chariot;

吸膿吃瘡的,可得車馬一乘;

those who licked the piles would get 5 chariots.

The more filthy the illness you treat, the more chariots you would get.

You have probably licked his piles; otherwise, how could you acquire that many chariots?

You had better go away!"
