　　Night Fight Against Ma Chao

This is a story from Three Kingdoms. Zhang Luordered Ma Chao to attack Jiameng Pass. Learningthis， Liu Bei immediately went to his militaryadvisor Zhuge Liang for ideas. Zhuge Liang said， “Mao Chao is so brave that only Zhang Fei and ZhaoYun can match him. But Zhang Fei and Zhao Yun canmatch him. But Zhao Yun is not available; onlyZhang Fei is around at the moment.”

Knowing that Ma Chao was attacking the pass，Zhang Fei came to ask for a fight against him. Pretending not to hear， Zhuge Liang said to LiuBei， “Ma Chao is attacking， and only Zhao Yun can defeat him.” Feeling snubbed， Zhang Feinoted his past merits and shouted， “If I can not defeat Ma Chao， I am willing to bepunished according the rule.” Only then did Zhuge Liang nod his aGREement. Liu Bei himselfacted as the chief commander and ordered Zhang Fei to fight in the vanguard. Liu Bei led thearmy to the pass. Time and again Ma Chao challenged them to fight. At every challenge，Zhang Fei wanted to engage him， but was stopped by Liu Bei. When Liu Bei saw Ma Chao andhis army became fatigued， he ordered Zhang Fei to take on the challenge. Zhang Fei and MaChao fought one hundred rounds with an even hand. When Liu Bei saw that it was turningdark， he asked Zhang Fei to come back for a fight tomorrow. But Zhang Fei becameinfuriated and shouted， “Light more torches and get ready for a night fight. I will not returnto the pass without defeating Ma Chao!” Ma Chao also pledged that he would not return to hiscamp without winning over Zhang Fei. Each of them mounted fresh horses to start the nightfight. After another twenty rounds， Ma Chao saw that he could not win by force， so he hadan idea. He pretended to flee. At the moment， Zhuge Liang arrived. He analyzed Ma Chao'ssituation and laid a trap for him. With Ma Chao in a fight spot， Zhuge Liang sent someonewho succeeded in persuading him to fight for Liu Bei.

Note： Zhang Lu was the Magistrate of Hanning. Ma Chao was a general in Xilling(nowadays Gansu Province) under Zhang Lu.

　　夜戰馬超

漢寧太守張魯命馬超攻葭萌關。劉備得知，忙找軍師諸葛亮商義，軍師說：“ 馬超英勇無比，若要除他，只有張飛和趙雲二人!”但趙雲在外，只有張飛在此。張飛見馬超攻關，大叫着請戰。諸葛亮假裝沒聽見，對劉備說：“馬超來侵犯，唯有云長才能得勝。”張飛聞言不高興，歷述自己以前的戰績後說：“我若不勝馬超，甘願軍令處罰。”諸葛亮這才答應。讓劉備親自帶兵，命張飛爲先鋒。劉備領兵來到關上，馬超三番五次叫陣。張飛屢欲下關迎戰，均被劉備阻攔。後來，劉備見馬超人馬疲乏，令張飛下關克敵。張飛、馬超大戰一百回合，不分勝敗。這時天色已晚，劉備勸張飛回關，明日再戰。張飛卻大叫：“多點火把，安排夜戰，不勝馬超，誓不回關!”馬超也發誓：“不勝張飛，誓不回寨!”二人各換一匹馬，開始了挑燈夜戰。又戰二十回合，馬超見不能取勝張飛，佯裝敗走。此時，諸葛亮趕到，略施小計，使馬超陷於困境，然後投降。
