There was a man in the State of Song who had an impatient disposition. Day and night the longed for the seedlings in the field to grow tall and strong quickly. But the seedlings grew very slowly, not as quickly as he hoped.
宋國有個人，是個急性子。他日日夜夜盼望田裏的秧苗快快長高長大。可是，秧苗長得很慢，沒有像他所希望的那樣長得快。
One day, the hit upon a good idea. He sneaked to the field and pulled each seedling up a little bit form the soil. Seeing that all the seedlings in the field were taller than before, he felt very pleased with himself.
有一天，他想出了一個好辦法。他自己悄悄地跑到田裏，把每一棵秧苗都從泥土裏往上拔高了一些。看到田裏的秧苗都比原來高了，他心裏感到樂滋滋的。
He went home. Though all worn out, he told the members of his family happily:
回到家裏，他雖然筋疲力盡，但是非常高興地告訴家人說：
“I worked for a whole day today. How tired I am! But the seedlings in the field have grown a lot taller.”
“今天，我幹了一整天，好累啊!不過，田裏的秧苗倒是長高好多了。”
When his son heard that the seedlings had grown taller, he hurried to the field to take a look. Oh, what a mess! Instead of growing taller, the seedlings had all started to wither.
他的兒子聽說秧苗長高了，連忙跑到田裏去看。一看，可糟啦!不是秧苗長高了，而是秧苗都開始枯萎了。

None of those tiny crabs and tadpoles can compare whit me. I am the master of this well, free and unrestrained. Why don’t you come often to play in the well?”
“你看，我住在這裏多麼快樂! 高興了，就在井邊跳躍一陣子;疲倦了，就回到井裏，睡在磚洞邊上休息一會兒。有時候，我靜靜地把全身泡在水裏，只露出頭和嘴巴;有時候，我靜靜地把全身泡在水裏，只露出頭和嘴巴;它們誰也比不上我。我是這個井的主人，自由自在，你不常到井裏來有玩遊玩呢!”
Hearing this, the turtle was itching to go down to take a look. But before he put his left foot into the well, his right foot stumbled. He quickly retreated two steps and told the frog about the sea:
大鱉聽了青蛙的話，心裏癢癢的，準備下去看看。但是它的左腳還沒伸進去，右腳就已經絆住了。它連忙後退了兩步，把大海的情形告訴青蛙，說：
“Have you ever seen the sea? The sea is very, very wide, over 1000 li. The sea is very, very deep, over 1000 Zhang. In ancient times, in nine years out of ten there were floods, but the water in the sea did not rise much. Later, in seven years out of eight there were droughts, but the water in the sea did not drop much. Neither big floods nor big droughts can affect the sea. Only living in the sea can you feel real happiness!”
“你見過大海嗎?海很大很大， 那止千里;海很深很深，哪止千丈。古時候，十年裏有九年發大水。但是海里的水漲高不了多少。後來，八年裏有七年要大旱，可是海里的水也不見得淺了多少。大澇和大旱都影響不了大海。住在大海里，纔是真正的快樂呢!”
Amazed at what the big turtle had said, the frog was dumbstruck.
聽了大鱉的這一番話，青蛙非常吃驚，呆在那裏，無話可說了。

“俗話說得好，有了一點學問，就以爲老子天下第一。我就是這種人。今天，我看到你這樣寬廣、這樣偉大，才發覺自己如此渺小，如此無知。如果今天沒遇見你，我恐怕永遠會被有見識的人所譏笑。”
Hairou said:
海若說:
“We cannot talk about the sea with a frog at the bottom of a well, for the frog is restricted by its dwelling place; we cannot talk about ice with a small insect is restricted by the seasons; we cabbit talk about profound learning with superficial persons, for they have too little knowledge. Now you have come out of a small river to the North Sea, seen the greatness of it and realized your own insignificance. Since you have taken such a modest attitude, I can then talk with you about profound learning. ”
“我們不能同井底的青蛙談海，是因爲青蛙受到住處的限制;不能同夏天英語小故事的小蟲受到季節的限制;不能同淺薄的人談論高深的學問，是因爲他們的知識太少。現在，你走出小河，來到北海，看到海的偉大，知道了自己的渺小。有了這種謙虛的態度，我就可以和你談論高深的學問了。”
