A British farmer's collection of Chinese antiques he picked up for as little as 100 pound each has sold for a massive 45.9 million Pound at auction .

Roger Pilkington put together an array of 100 pieces of Chinese ceramics during the 1950s and 1960s.

During that time Mr Pilkington, who died in 1969 aged just 40, acquired cache of artifacts from the Tang, Song, Ming and Qing dynasties. They spanned a millennium - dating from 618 to 1912.

The value of Asian antiques has shot up in recent years as the newly-rich Chinese set about buying back their heritage which was taken out of the far east by westerners in the 19th century. Even so, the total sale price of 45.9m pound was More than double the pre-sale estimate of 20m pound.

Leading the sale was a 9ins tall 15th century blue and white Moon Flask which sold for a pound 10.1m while an exquisite holy water vessel from the same period achieved a price of pound 9.1m.

A six inch wide bowl made for an Emperor in the Ming dynasty in the 15th century went under the hammer for almost pound 6m. The bowl is so rare that many of the world's greatest collections in museum lack an example.

Nicolas Chow, deputy chairman of Sotheby's Asia, said: "The Pilkington Collection contained extraordinarily rare items, of a kind seldom seen together on the market.

"This time capsule captured a seminal moment in the history of collecting when connoisseurship in the field reached new heights of sophistication, and when collectors' appetites for the very best were serviced by a handful of brilliant dealers."
