The renminbi grew its share of international transactions – if only slightly – as the US dollar ceded ground to the euro in September.

The Chinese currency accounted for 2.03 per cent of international transactions via the Swift global bank payment messaging network last Month, up from 1.86 per cent in August.

That reading from the partial measure of the currency’s international prominence puts it closer to its January peak of 2.45 per cent this year and a record level of 2.79 per cent reached in August 2015.

Vina Cheung, Asia Pacific head of Rmb internationalisation, global liquidity and cash management at HSBC, pointed to further gains by the Chinese currency in payments made by individual countries:

More and more countries are “crossing the river” and making use of the renminbi for a meaningful share of their payments with Hong Kong and China. The latest SWIFT data shows the Chinese currency continuing to gain critical mass in global payments with another seven nations using renminbi for more than 10% of their direct payments with Hong Kong and China.

As a share of total swift payments the Rmb remains comfortably in sixth place. September saw US dollar dominance recede by almost 1.5 percentage points to 41.08 per cent as the euro remained in second, gaining almost 1 per cent to account for 31.24 per cent of the total. Other moves among the top ten currencies were relatively marginal, however.
