Think what you will of Hillary Clinton, but nobody should question her endurance. After two marathon runs for the DeMocratic nomination, Mrs Clinton has finally made it across the finishing line. She is the first woman in US history to become a presidential nominee.

Doubts will linger about how close she came to being humiliated by a socialist loner from Vermont. Even now Bernie Sanders is reluctant to rally behind her. Yet it is worth bearing in mind that she has prevailed in the least propitious of conditions. Establishment figures are struggling to cling on in all parts of the democratic world.

That said, Mrs Clinton’s harshest test is still very much before her. Unless, and until she can quell doubts about the quality of her campaign, the spectre of losing to Donald Trump will keep surfacing.

In the history of polling, nobody has yet made it to the White House with negative trust ratings. By any measure Mrs Clinton’s deficit is gaping. The fact that Mr Trump’s is even worse is no basis for complacency. Incredibly, given the latter’s tendency to denigrate women, Mrs Clinton is disliked by an even higher share of men than Mr Trump is disliked by women.

Overcoming this will be Mrs Clinton’s hardest task. The more she tries to seem authentic, the more she risks feeding the suspicion she is following a poll-dictated script. One solution would be to make herself far more available to public encounters. Too often her interactions with voters seem staged and wooden. Mrs Clinton has not held a press conference in six months, compared with dozens staged by Mr Trump.

A bigger step would be to pledge that she would close the Clinton Foundation if elected president. The potential conflict of interest is too glaring to ignore. The longer Mrs Clinton delays, the greater Mr Trump’s scope for branding the Clintons as creatures of global special interests. Whether or not the Department of Justice indicts Mrs Clinton and staff members for using a private server while she was secretary of state, she should be far more forthright in her contrition. The decision to bypass official channels was a mistake that reinforced the sense there is one rule for the Clintons and another for everyone else. By acknowledging this perception, and taking clear steps to address it, Mrs Clinton could undo much of the deep-seated mistrust.

None of this will be enough unless she can more clearly spell out why she wants to be president. At the moment Mrs Clinton’s campaign consists of two elements: that Mr Trump is too dangerous for the job and that she will deliver worthy accomplishments once she is in White House. The first is undoubtedly true. Mrs Clinton went some way last week towards defining the alarming consequences of a Trump presidency.

The second remains woefully nebulous. There are many good items on Mrs Clinton’s shopping list, such as boosting investment in infrastructure and updating workplace benefits to fit the 21st century economy better. But her message lacks a theme. The temptation is to believe she will win in November by uniting all the demographic groups Mr Trump has offended. That may be possible — even probable. But it is no basis for governing. Moreover, it fuels the popular notion that Mrs Clinton simply wants power for power’s sake.

The coming weeks will be the most testing of Mrs Clinton’s career. Mr Trump will leave no rock unthrown in his quest to damage her reputation. The more Mrs Clinton can stake out a positive and clear vision for the White House, the better she will fortify herself against the ugliness to come.
