Autumn. The air is light and summer's humid heat is fading. Pomegranates in the courtyards are bursting their vermillion skins to show off their jeweled kernels. In the parks and gardens, chrysanthemums are on stand-by for their seasonal display.

Stars are finally struggling through the cool dusk, and the Moon will shine its brightest with Mid-Autumn around the corner. This is a time to celebrate both revolution and romance.

There are many legends linked to Zhongqiujie or Mid-Autumn Festival, but the most commonly quoted are about secret messages that galvanized a change of government, and a romantic, if convoluted, story of the archer Hou Yi and his wife Chang'e, the lady in the moon.

Let's talk about revolution first. Although the festival is long established in Chinese folklore, the eating of the mandatory moon cakes did not start until late, relative to culinary chronology. In 1368, chaffing under the Mongolian yoke after 88 years, an adviser to rebel chief Zhu Yuanzhang came up with a plot to send out rallying messages hidden in sweet pastries - much like fortune cookies.

Although there are no documented records to show how the rebels actually gathered, we can safely say the way to a revolutionary heart, must have been through the stomach since Zhu Yuanzhang successfully overthrew the Yuan emperors and founded the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).

Moon cakes are now sold in elaborate packaging that jack up the prices of the pastries to hundreds of yuan. All sorts of pastries and fillings imaginable are available, even moon cakes made from icecream and chocolate. In the south, the favorite traditional filling is lotus seed paste, while northerners like everything from red bean and date paste to ham and nuts.

A much earlier myth associated with the festival is the rather melancholic romance between the archer Hou Yi and his wife, Chang'e. There many versions but here are the most common threads.

In those times when gods and men had a less remote relationship, 10 blazing suns shone relentlessly, scorching the earth. Hou Yi was a fine marksman, so he took his bow and arrows and shot down nine, wisely leaving one to bless the day.

For his great common sense, he was rewarded with an elixir for immortality enough for him and his wife, whom he loved dearly. He kept the elixir in a box while he went hunting and told his wife not to open it. That was the last thing he should have said.

Just like Pandora, Chang'e was into the box as soon as hubby was out of the door. Unfortunately, he came back unexpectedly and surprised her holding the elixir. In her panic, Chang'e drank it all up.

The potion was so strong she started floating and didn't stop till she reached the moon. And there she has remained since, looking down in eternal regret, accompanied only by a little rabbit she managed to grab on the way up.

Both stories are often retold as people gather under the autumn moon, feasting on moon cakes and sipping fine tea. This is an occasion for the family to get together, second only to the Lunar New Year reunion dinner that every Chinese rushes home for.

The food on the table is seasonal, and often the main attraction is hairy crabs, which are at their largest and richest with roe during autumn. In Shanghai, only the best crabs from Yangcheng Lake are eaten and gourmets and ostentatious gourmands alike willingly fork out more than 1,000 yuan ($146) per kg each year for the authentic stuff.

Moon cakes and crabs are not the only treats on the Mid-Autumn dining table. You also have the sweet pomelos.

These huge citrus fruits are like gigantic grapefruits, but unlike pamplemousse, they are very sweet and the fruit sacs separate easily. They ripen about now and because they have beautifully golden skin and a round rump, they are enjoyed for both their likeness to the lunar orb and their juicy sweetness.

In the south, the taro harvest is ready. These are little yams, unlike the larger varieties and they are simply boiled, peeled at table and dipped in caster sugar as a snack.

Another uniquely southern addition to the Mid-Autumn Festival is the strangely shaped water fruit of an aquatic plant, they look like a black bull's head with impressive horns. The nut inside is snow-white and when steamed and cracked is subtly sweet and quite delicious.

Mooncakes are to Mid-Autumn Festival what mince pies are to Christmas. The seasonal round cakes traditionally have a sweet filling of lotus seed paste or red bean paste and often have one or more salted duck eggs in the center to represent the moon. And the moon is what this celebration is all about. Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 15th day of the 8th month,it is the time when the moon is said to be at its brightest and fullest.

There are two legends which claim to explain the tradition of eating mooncakes. One Tang Dynasty myth holds that the Earth once had 10 suns circling it. One day all 10 suns appeared at once, scorching the planet with their heat. It was thanks to a skillful archer named Hou Yi that the Earth was saved. He shot down all but one of the suns. As his reward, the Heavenly Queen Mother gave Hou Yi the Elixir of Immortality, but she warned him that he must use it wisely. Hou Yi ignored her advice and, corrupted by fame and fortune, became a tyrannical leader. Chang-Er,his beautiful wife, could no longer stand by and watch him abuse his power so she stole his Elixir and fled to the moon to escape his angry wrath. And thus began the legend of the beautiful woman in the moon, the Moon Fairy.

The second legend has it that during the Yuan Dynasty,an underground group led by Zhu Yuan Zang was determined to rid the country of Mongolian dominance. The moon cake was created to carry a secret message. When the cake was opened and the message read,an uprising was unleashed which successfully routed the Mongolians. It happened at the time of the full moon, which, some say, explains why mooncakes are eaten at this time. Mooncakes are usually stamped with Chinese characters indicating the name of the bakery and the type of filling used. Some bakeries will even stamp them with your family name so that you can give personalised ones to friends and family. They are usually presented in boxes of four which indicate the four phases of the moon. Traditional mooncakes are made with melted lard, but today vegetable oil is more often used in the interests of health. Mooncakes are not for the diet-conscious as they are loaded with calories. The best way to wash down one of these sticky cakes is with a cup of Chinese tea, especially Jasmine or Chrysanthemum tea, which aids the digestion.

The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the moon festival, is held every year in the fall andtraditionally involves family gatherings that feature mooncakes and time spent outdoorsadmiring the full moon.

Part of the moon-watching tradition during the holiday traces back to a traditional folk beliefthat a female deity who lives on the moon named Chang'e can be spotted during the just in case bad weather strikes, the Chinese e-commerce platform Taobao is partneringwith Allianz China General Insurance to offer novelty Mid-Autumn Festival insurance to coverpeople whose view of the full moon might be blocked by storms.

The plans are available in more than 40 cities across China, including Shanghai, Beijing,Guangzhou and Shenzhen, and offer consumers protection against nighttime clouds on theholiday, which falls on Sept. 19.

The cost and availability of the plan varies from city to city. The cheapest plans are availablein Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, where insurance can be purchased online for 20 yuan(about US$3) with payouts of up to 50 yuan. In other cities including Beijing, premiums are ahigher 99 yuan (US$16), with a 188 yuan (US$31) possible payout. (For a higher 188 yuanpremium, customers also get a box of mooncakes in the deal.) Allianz says it used 20 years ofmeteorological data to establish its risk model.

Allianz representative Janice Jiang said the novelty insurance plan was launched as part ofthe company's effort to expand its digital presence, and that Chinese insurance companiesmay in the future do more to focus on niche markets by collaborating with e-commerceplatforms.

In a statement, Taobao Insurance's General Manager Jiang Xing said the plan is a form of'quality of life' protection, eliminating the possibility of regret during the festival. It's also a wayto boost attention for Taobao's insurance portal, which was launched in 2010.

But the insurance plan still might leave people disappointed. The company will onlyreimburse insurance-holders if their view of the moon is blocked by rain, as defined by officialmeteorological reports recorded at 6 p.m. The insurance plan will not protect against clouds, fog or haze--all frequent occurrences in China's big cities, thanks to high levels of airpollution.

Air pollution can be a sensitive subject in China, and its scope has for years been downplayedby officials and state news agencies. Regular levels of intense smog in recent years havepostponed flights, caused widespread respiratory problems and been found to cut years offthe lives of the country's citizens.
