This one was worn and held together with staples(書釘).“Why two bags?” her father asked. “The other is something else” Molly answered.“What’s in it?” “Just some it with you.” Not wanting to discuss the matter, he put both sacks(bags) into his briefcase, kissed Molly and rushed midday he opened Molly’s bag and took out the contents:two hair ribbons, three small stones,a plastic dinosaur,a tiny sea shell,a small doll, and 13 busy father smiled, finished eating, and swept the desk clean into the wastebasket, Molly’s stuff included.

Babies born in summer are more likely to become short-sighted in late life, a study has shown.

As many as a quarter of all cases of short-sightedness are caused by too great an exposure to sunlight in the first weeks of life, say eye experts. They are advising all parents to put sunglasses on their babies during the first weeks. Scientists had already established that over-exposure to sunlight caused shortsightedness in animals. Researchers who compared the months in which babies were born with whether they needed glasses later on say the principle also applies to humans. A study of almost 300,000 young adults---the largest of its kind showed that those born in June and July had a 25 per cent greater chance of becoming severely short-sighted than those born in December or January. Research leader Professor Michael Belkin of Tel Aviv University, said it was because prolonged illumination(光照) causes the eyeball to lengthen, causing short-sightedness. Therefore, the more light a newborn is exposed to, the more the eyeball lengthens and the worse the short-sightedness will be. The mechanism which lengthens the eyeball is associated with levels of melatonin(褪黑激素), a pigment (色素) which protects the skin against harmful rays of the sun. In young babies not enough melatonin is released as protection, meaning they are more vulnerable to sunburn and changes to eyeball shape.

Sight expert Professor Daniel O’Leary, of Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, said “At the moment we don’t know the precise cause of why light exposure affects sight, but the evidence seems to prove that it is one of the reasons for people becoming shortsighted.”

D. he tries to give the cause of why light exposure affects sight

31. The underlined word “vulnerable” in the passage probably means __________.

A. easy to be harmed B. resistant C. protective D. changeable

Last winter, when I was heavily pregnant, I was visiting my sister and brother-in-law's house and had to park in a nearby parking lot because they didn't have accessible parking. The snow was extremely heavy and there was lots of ice on the ground --- not many people had ventured out that evening!

When I returned to my car around , I noticed that I was the only car left. Nervously, I hopped into the car and let it warm up a bit. When I finally tried to drive away, my wheels began to spin. I was stuck! I spun and spun and wondered what to do.

All of a sudden, in my rear view mirror, I saw four teen-aged boys approaching my car. They were walking side by side in a line and dressed a bit like gang members --- at least I thought that's what they looked like. My car was in a very isolated area and I began to panic. I was certain they were coming to my car to harm me. Terrified, I just froze. One of the young men tapped on my window and said "Excuse me, Ma'am, can we help you? You seem stuck." Still afraid and fearing the worst, I said "I am stuck." And the young man said "It's okay, stay in your car and we'll push you out of the snow." And they did!

When they finally got me out of the snow, they smiled and waved. I rolled down my window and thanked them, embarrassed to have judged them so poorly

If you think you’ve gained too much weight or are too skinny, you can talk to a doctor. Your doctor will tell you ______36________.

If it is concerned about your height, weight, or BMI (體重指數), your doctor may ask questions _______37. _______. Your doctor may also ask about your family background to find out if you’ve received something from your parents that might make you taller, shorter, or a late bloomer (someone who develops later than other people of the same age). The doctor can then put all the information together to decide ______38_______.

If your weight isn’t in a healthy range, you will probably get specific diet and exercise recommendations based on your individual needs. Following a doctor’s or dietitian’s plan designed especially for you will work much better than following fad (時尚) diets. For teens, fad diets or starvation plans can actually slow down growth, and the weight loss usually doesn’t last.

What ______39________? Most teens who weigh less than other teens of their age are just fine. They may be going through puberty on a different schedule than kids of the same age, and their bodies may be growing and changing at a different rate. Most underweight teens catch up in weight as they finish puberty during their later teen years so there’s rarely a need to try to gain weight.

In a few cases, teenagers can be underweight because of a health problem that needs treatment. If you feel tired or ill a lot, or _____40_______, or other problems that have lasted for more than a week or two, be sure to let your parents or your doctor know.

A. whether you might have a weight or growth problem.

B. if you have symptoms like a cough, stomachache

C. about your health, physical activity, and eating habits

D. if you’re worried about being too skinny

E. if you take care of it

F. whether you’re growing normally

G. about your dieting

I’m Li Hua, a student from Class2, Grade 3. I’m writing to apply for the position as a student volunteer.

I really want to obtain this precious opportunity because, by offering my service, I will be able to improve my organizational ability, communication skills as well as my confidence in speaking English in public.

As an outgoing girl, I get along well with my classmates. Besides, I have such a good command of English that I am elected as assistant to my English teacher. Successfully, I have lent a helping hand to her in several English activities of my class, which have been appreciated by both teachers and classmates.

I am sure that I can perfectly live up to your expectations. I will be grateful if you could give me a kind consideration.

Looking forward to your reply.

Yours truly,
