When I was growing up, I had an old neighbor named Doctor Gibbs. He didn’t look like ally doctor I’d ever known. He never yelled at us for playing in his yard, but was always very kind.

When Doctor Gibbs wasn’t saving lives, he was planting trees. He had some interesting theories about planting trees. He believed in the principle. “No pains, no gains”. He hardly Watered his new trees, an attitude which flew in the face of conventional wisdom.

Once I asked why and he told me that watering plants spoiled them because it made them grow weaker. He said you had to make things tough for the trees so that only the strongest could survive. He talked about how watering trees made them develop shallow roots and how, if they were not watered, trees would grow deep roots in search of water. So, instead of watering his trees every morning, he’d beat them with a rolled-up newspaper. I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the tree’s attention.

Doctor Gibbs died a couple of years after I left home. Every now and then, I walked by his house and looked at the trees that I’d watched him plant some 25 years ago. They were tall and strong.

I planted a couple of trees myself a few years ago. Two years of attending these trees meant they grew up weak. Whenever a cold wind blew, their branches trembled. Adversity seemed to benefit Doctor Gibb’s trees in ways that comfort and ease never could. Every night before I go to bed, I check on my two sons. I often pray that their lives will be easy. But lately I’ve been thinking that it’s time to change my prayer. I know my children are going to encounter hardship. There’s always a cold wind blowing somewhere. What we need to do is to pray for deep roots, so when the rains fall and the winds blow, we won’t be torn apart.

21. With the trees planted, Doctor Gibbs often _______.

A. heat them to attract neighbours’ attention

B. kept watering them every morning

C. talked to them to get their attention

D. paid little attention to them

22. What does the underlined word “Adversity” mean in the fifth paragraph?

A. Bad weather B. Enough care or attention.

C. Difficult living conditions. D. Lack of damp.

23. Which prayer does the author wish for his sons?

A. Have an easy life, without too much to worry about.

B. Be able to stand the rain and wind in their lives.

C. Have good luck, encountering less hardship in their life.

D. Meet people like Dr Gibbs in the future.

B

Searching for airfares often seems like a game that passengers are bound to lose. Prices change from day to day, even minute to minute. Looking through multiple websites for the best deal can be a big challenge. Even when you do book, there’s no guarantee that you are going to get the best price.

“You just don’t know when to make a deal. It’s not like buying anything else I can think of,” said George Hobica, founder of Airfarewatchdog. com.

Harriet Levy paid $179 for a recent round—trip flight on American Airlines between New York and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Sitting just one row behind her, Shirley Harrison paid $ 215. A few rows back, Ellis and Dianne Traub paid $ 317 each. There were at least 12 fares on the flight, ranging from $169 to $360. There’s no reason for it, Harrison said.

Fares can change significantly in just a few hours. One Delta flight from New York to Los Angeles jumped from $ 755 to $1,143 from a Friday to Saturday in late April, then fell to $ 718 on Sunday. The flight was one of a dozen the Associated Press followed over three months for a vacation between July 16 and 22. The number one finding: avoid booking tickets on weekends. It’s the most expensive time to buy.

There’s no way to guarantee the best fare. But before booking, travelers should pay attention to this additional advice:

Book on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. That’s when airlines most often offer special sales.

Buy in advance, but not too early. The best time is four to six weeks before traveling. In general, prices for any given flight are highest eight to ten weeks and two to three weeks in advance.

Make use of social media. Airlines are giving more benefits to travelers who interact with them on Twitter and Facebook. But those specials are often gone within hours.

Choose the stable or the lowest? The fares of some so-called discount airlines, such as JetBlue, Air-Tran, Southwest and Frontier, are less changeable than other airlines, so you can feel more confident that the price will stay the same. But the fares aren’t always the lowest.

In all, there’s no way to guarantee the best fare, but researching different airlines’ fares can be the only way to get a good deal.

24. What can we infer from the first sentence of the text?

A. Airlines often play games with passengers.

B. Passengers are unable to search for airfares.

C. It’s difficult for passengers to get the best price.

D. Airfares are set in different situations.

25. By using a lot of figures, the author intends to ________.

A. discover the rules behind airfares B. prove airfares can vary widely

C. guarantee passengers a low price

D. show there is standard price for every single airline

26. If you want to take a flight on Christmas, which time can be the best to book a ticket?

A. September 15th B. October 15th C. November 15th D. December 15th

27. Passengers are advised to book flights _________.

A. at the lowest price by comparing as many airlines

B. with airlines which are famous for offering discount prices

C. through two apps on smart phones D. on some special websites

Sharing cars to work is not unusual. But what about sharing time to raise children together? In Ningbo city of Zhejiang province in East China, young mothers in the same neighborhood pool their children together, and share the responsibility of being parents.

Spending every day together, but not families — in this coastal city of East China, three mothers are trying a new way of raising their kids, by pooling them together. Among the mothers are both office workers and housewives. They say they do so not just because of the tight schedule. Jiujiu’s mother said, “By kids pooling, we mean to create an opportunity for the kids to spend time together so that we can observe our kids, learn more about them. And then we can discuss how to better bring them up.”

The three families have been doing so for two years, in school days and holidays. Their children have grown used to each other’s company. Chichi’s mother said, “My son was a bit shy. We’ve been talking him to be more active, but he hardly changed. After joining the kids pool, suddenly we found him willing to communicate with others now. When we are not there, he has to rely on himself to get along with his pals.”

Generally, mothers speak highly about the pooling. The mothers describe the pooling as bringing the running water into a closed pond. It opens a window to a different world for both kids and parents. But there are moments when opinions differ. Xiaoxiao’s mother said, “Sex education for example. Kids will be curious about it when they reach a certain age. Personally I want to talk with my child about it, frankly and sincerely. But the other two moms think it better not to bring it up.” Xiaoxiao’s mother says her solution is to share some parenting guidebooks with other mothers and let them make the decision.

The headmaster of the kindergarten believes such pooling activities test not only children, but also the parents. Jin Hongqing, kindergarten headmaster said, “Parents need to be tolerant and patient. They shouldn’t play the blame game when kids fight with each other. It’s better to let the kids solve the issue by themselves. What they can do as parents is to communicate.”

28. All the following aspects are the benefits of kids pooling EXCEPT ________.

A. It saves time and helps relieve mother’s burden.

B. It offers better education than the kindergartens.

C. It allows parents to learn more about kids.

D. It allows kids to learn to share and be independent.

29. Why is sex education mentioned in the passage?

A. To suggest children are sometimes curious about it.

B. To explain sex education is not suitable for children.

C. To indicate mothers think highly of kids pooling.

D. To show sometimes mothers have different opinions.

30. What’s the writer’s attitude towards kids pooling?

A. Unclear. B. Favorable. C. Negative. D. Doubtful.

31. Which of the following can best serve as the title of the passage?

A. Chinese parenting. B. Sharing cars.

C. Sharing children. D. Kids pooling.

Alibaba started taking the lead in China by connecting big Chinese manufacturers with big buyers across the world. Its business-to-business site, Alibaba. com allowed business to buy almost everything. Alibaba’s advantage wasn’t hard to judge: size. Alibaba is just big, even by Chinese standards. Its market attracts 231 million active buyers, 8 million sellers, 11.3 billion orders a year—and Alibaba is iust the middleman. It encourages people to use its markets—not charging small sellers a percentage of the sale.

If you want a quick look into the influence of Alibaba on daily Chinese life, take my experience. I moved to Beijing a year ago and quickly got tired of visiting small stores across the crowded, polluted city of 20 million people in search of new electronics, bathroom furnishings, and anything else my wife wanted. “You’re looking for what exactly? Why not try it? ”my Chinese teacher asked me one day. With that, my wonderful new relationship with Alibaba began.

Alibaba’s original business-to-business model now is second to consumer buying. Chinese retail buying makes up 80% of Alibaba’s profit, and leading that group is Taobao, with 800 million items for sale and the most unbelievable selection of things you’ll ever find. TMall. com is Alibaba’s other big site, where you can find brand name goods from Nike and Unilever near the lowest prices.

What I have a hard time explaining to friends and family back in the U. S. is how China has gone beyond traditional shopping—big—box retailers especially—in favor of online purchases on Taobao and a few other sites. In smaller towns than Beijing, where big retailers have not yet traveled, shopping online is shopping, and shopping is Taobao.

I have a list of some of my recent purchases on Taobao for a sense of how wide the marketplace is. Almost everything arrived a day or two after ordering with free shipping. I’m not even a big buyer, because I need friends to help me search the Chinese—language site. When I was searching my purchase history on my Chinese teacher’s iPad, which helps me buy goods, I looked through with great difficulty about 10 of her purchases for every one of mine.

32. Alibaba’s advantage mainly lies in ________.

A. its low price B. its not charging small sellers

C. its business-to-business service D. its big size

33. In paragraph 1, by referring to “Alibaba” as “the middleman”, the author means _______.

A. Alibaba stands out as the best online site.

B. Alibaba is of middle size among all the online sites.

C. Alibaba acts as a bridge between the buyers and sellers.

D. Alibaba will continue to develop.

34. What can be inferred from the passage?

A. Taobao has no obvious advantage over other similar online sites.

B. Alibaba’s business-to-business service earns more money than retail.

C. The author’s Chinese teacher is also an online purchase lover.

D. TMall. com provides more profit than Taobao.

35. What is the passage mainly about?

A. How the author purchases online in China.

B. Alibaba influences people’s daily purchase i China.

C. Shopping online in China is TaoBao.

D. Shopping online goes beyond traditional shopping.

第二節:(共5小題,每小題2分,滿分10分)

根據短文內容,從短文後的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項爲多餘選項。

Roger Sperry and Robert Ornstein of the California Institute of Technology, Nobel Prize winners, discovered that the human brain has two sides, and each side has different work to do. The left side of the brain controls language and number and it analyses and reasons. 36 It controls our appreciation of music and our sense of rhythm. It is also the right side of our brain which daydreams.

Leonardo da Vinci was the great painter and sculptor. He was also an architect, a scientist and an inventor! 37 When he invented machines he used both his imaginative ability and his analytical ability.

38 Albert Einstein enjoyed art, playing the violin and sailing. Indeed, Einstein said his scientific discoveries grew from his imagination rather than from analysis, reason and language. He said that written and spoken words were not important in his thinking. The story goes that Einstein was daydreaming one summer’s day while sitting on a hill. He imagined that he was riding on sunbeams to the far distance of the universe. Then he found that he had returned to the sun. So he realized that the universe must curve(彎曲).

39 He then used the left side of his brain to apply analysis, number and reason. And finally he used language to explain it.

Traditional education in schools encourages us to use the left side of our brains. Language, number, analysis and reason are given more importance in our schools than imagination and daydreaming. Why don’t we give more value to visual thinking? Why jump on one foot if we have two perfectly good legs!

40 We need to use our imagination to think of solutions to problems and to enjoy emotional and artistic experiences. And we need to be logical able to analyze and organize in order to survive day by day.

A. The right side controls our imagination and our understanding of space.

B. Great scientists and great artists are similar.

C. We all need both sides of our brain.

D. He got this idea by using his imagination.

E. We benefit by thinking creatively.

F. He used both sides of his brain within each activity.

G. He was considered crazy for his strange ideas.

The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) is thinking of adding the word “tuhao” for its newest edition. The word become popular in China during the past few months to describe the newly-rich people who spend money in wasteful ways. The OED is also thinking of including “dama”, other Chinese word, to enlarging the English vocabulary. Many other Chinese words and phrases are likely to appear in it.

The news which the OED is adding these words have met with some criticism. Some people say the words embarrass China, but others insist that in a globalized society it’s naturally for words to spread and be adopted at elsewhere. In my opinions, a word like “tuhao” expresses the humor and intelligent of Chinese people. So, welcome to the English language, tuhao—let’s be friends!

I work with Volunteers for Wildlife, a rescue and education organization at Bailey Arboretum in Locust Valley. Trying to help injured, displaced or sick creatures can be heartbreaking; survival is never certain. However, when it works, it is simply beautiful.

I got a rescue call from a woman in Muttontown. She had found a young owl(貓頭鷹) on the ground. When I arrived, I saw a 2-to 3-week-old owl. It had already been placed in a carrier for safety.

I examined the chick(雛鳥) and it seemed fine. If I could locate the nest, I might have been able to put it back, but no luck. My next work was to construct a nest and anchor it in a tree.

The homeowner was very helpful. A wire basket was found. I put some pine branches into the basket to make this nest safe and comfortable. I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed down.

Now all that was needed were the parents, but they were absent. I gave the homeowner a recording of the hunger screams of owl chicks. These advertise the presence of chicks to adults; they might also encourage our chick to start calling as well. I gave the owner as much information as possible and headed home to see what news the night might bring.

A nervous night to be sure, but sometimes the spirits of nature smile on us all! The homeowner called to say that the parents had responded to the recordings. I drove over and saw the chick in the nest looking healthy and active. And it was accompanied in the nest by zxxk the greatest sight of all — LUNCH! The parents had done their duty and would probably continue to do so.

Some of the world’s most famous musicians recently gathered in Paris and New Orleans to celebrate the first annual International Jazz Day. UNESCO( United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) recently set April 30 as a day to raise awareness of jazz music, its significance, and its potential as a unifying(聯合) voice across cultures.

Despite the celebrations, though, in the U.S. the jazz audience continues to shrink and grow older, and the music has failed to connect with younger generations.

It’s Jason Moran’s job to help change that. As the Kennedy Center’s artistic adviser for jazz, Moran hopes to widen the audience for jazz, make the music more accessible, and preserve its history and culture.

“Jazz seems like it’s not really a part of the American appetite,” Moran tells National Public Radio’s reporter Neal Conan. “What I’m hoping to accomplish is that my generation and younger start to reconsider and understand that jazz is not black and write anymore. It’s actually color, and it’s actually digital.”

Moran says one of the problems with jazz today is that the entertainment aspect of the music has been lost. “The music can’t be presented today the way it was in 1908 or 1958. It has to continue to move, because the way the world works is not the same,” says Moran.

Last year, Moran worked on a project that arranged Fats Waller’s music for a dance party, “Just to kind of put it back in the mind that Waller is dance music as much as it is concert music,” says Moran. “For me, it’s the recontextualization. In music, where does the emotion(情感) lie? Are we, as humans, gaining any insight(感悟) on how to talk about ourselves and how something as abstract as a Charlie Parker record gets us into a dialogue about our emotions and our thoughts? Sometimes we lose sight that the music has a wider context,” says Moran, “so I want to continue those dialogues. Those are the things I want to foster.”

A buld-it-yourself solar still(蒸餾器) is one of the best ways to obtain drinking water in areas where the liquid is not readily available. Developed by two doctors in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, it’s an excellent water collector. Unfortunately, you must carry the necessary equipment with you, since it’s all but impossible to find natural substitutes. The only components required, though, are a 5' 5' sheet of clear or slightly milky plastic, six feet of plastic tube, and a container— perhaps just a drinking cup — to catch the water. These pieces can be folded into a neat little pack and fastened on your belt.

To construct a working still, use a sharp stick or rock to dig a hole four feet across and three feet deep. Try to make the hole in a damp area to increase the water catcher’s productivity. Place your cup in the deepest part of the hole. Then lay the tube in place so that one end rests all the way in the cup and the rest of the line runs up — and out — the side of the hole.

Next, cover the hole with the plastic sheet, securing the edges of the plastic with dirt and weighting the sheet’s center down with a rock. The plastic should now form a cone(圓錐體) with 45-degree-angled sides. The low point of the sheet must be centered directly over, and no more than three inches above, the cup.

The solar still works by creating a greenhouse under the plastic. Ground water evaporates (蒸發) and collects on the sheet until small drops of water form, run down the material and fall off into the cup. When the container is full, you can suck the refreshment zxxk out through the tube, and won’t have to break down the still every time you need a drink.

32. What do we know about the solar still equipment from the first paragraph?

A. It’s delicate. B. It’s expensive.

C. It’s complex. D. It’s portable.

33. What does the underlined phrase “the water catcher” in paragraph 2 refer to?

A. The tube. B. The still.

C. The hole. D. The cup.

34. What’s the last step of constructing a working solar still?

A. Dig a hole of a certain size. B. Put the cup in place.

C. Weight the sheet’s center down. D. Cover the hole with the plastic sheet.

35. When a solar still works, drops of water come into the cup form .

A. the plastic tube B. outside the hole

C. the open air D. beneath the sheet

If anyone had told me three years ago that I would be spending most of my weekends camping. I would have laughed heartily. Campers, in my eyes, were people who enjoyed insect bites, ill-cooked meals, and uncomfortable sleeping bags. They had nothing in common with me. 36 .

The friends who introduced me to camping thought that it meant to be a pioneer. 37 We sleep in a tent, cooked over an open fire, and walked a long distance to take the shower and use the bathroom. This brief visit with Mother Nature cost me two days off from work, recovering from a bad case of sunburn and the doctor’s bill for my son’s food poisoning.

I was, nevertheless, talked into going on another fun-filled holiday in the wilderness. 38 Instead, we had a pop-up camper with comfortable beds and an air conditioner. My nature-loving friends had remembered to bring all the necessities of life.

39 We have done a lot of it since. Recently, we bought a twenty-eight-foot travel trailer complete with a bathroom and a built-in TV set. There is a separate bedroom, a modern kitchen with a refrigerator. The trailer even has matching carpet and curtains.

40 It must be true that sooner or later, everyone finds his or her way back to nature. I recommend that you find your way in style.

There has been a recent trend in the food service industry toward lower fat content and less salt. This trend, which was started by the medical community(醫學界) 61 a method of fighting heart disease, has had some unintended side 62 (effect) such as overweight and heart disease-the very thing the medical community was trying to fight.

Even 66 (bad), the amount of fast food that people eat goes up. Fast food

67 (be) full of fat and salt; by 68 (eat) more fast food people will get more salt and fat than they need in their diet.

In the summer holiday following my eighteen birthday, I took driving lessons. I still remember how hard first day was. Before getting into the car, I thought I had learned the instructor’s orders, so once I started the car, my mind goes blank. I forgot what he had said to me altogether. The instructor kept repeating the word, “Speed up!” “Slow down!” “Turning left!” I was so much nervous that I could hardly tell which direction was left. A few minutes late, the instructor asked me to stop the car. It was a relief and I came to a suddenly stop just in the middle on the road.
