Aging of the Population

The Importance of Winning Respect

Although we would all love to be Ms Popular at home and in the office, at work the task is not to be liked, but to be effective, says computer sales executive Andrea.

"This is possibly the single most important lesson we can learn. You can’t always be popular. You shouldn’t have to be; it’s not what you’re there for. Progress depends on having your own ideas and sticking to them. And that means having the guts to make difficult decisions when you have to," she says.

We’re aware from day one in our first job that every decision we make is either a building block or a stumbling block on our career path. We should use the time to lay the groundwork of future respect by being professional, responsible, innovative, diligent and reliable.

Respect is never given for nothing. Claire knew that she was offered a move to Paris with her finance company because she had gained a reputation for keeping cool under fire. And the next step up the ladder would depend on her performance in Paris.

"It’s essential to build regard if you’re going to be able to do what you want in your job," she says. Winning respect enhances all you do. A proposal for change is more likely to be well received; an application for a raise or a request for promotion is more likely to succeed. (232 words)

The Internet Makes Job Hunting More Efficient

The rapid development of the Internet gives rise to the phenomenon of applying for jobs online. It is commonplace to submit one's resume and recommendation letters via the Internet and a large number of graduates are employed via online tests. I would like to focus on one major advantage which is that job hunting becomes more efficient when it is done online.

One of the pronounced advantages of online job hunting is that it is more efficient since potential candidates do not have to travel to other cities where the job is. The rise of online interviews provides even more convenience both for the employees and the employers. Furthermore, graduates can get access to considerably more information online since there are a number of websites dedicated to job hunting. The Internet has rendered the whole process more effective and efficient. Graduates can select several categories and narrow down their options. In a way, the Internet serves as a gigantic database and matches graduates with their potential employers. However, it is undeniable that an online interview can only reflect some aspects of a candidate. I believe that in order to gauge a person's potential and aptitude face-to-face interview is imperative.

In conclusion, the efficiency and effectiveness of the Internet for job seekers is a huge advantage which is reflected in the growing number of positions available online.

Certification: A Way to Prove Oneself

For a growing number of Chinese people, the most productive thing to do with one’s spare time is to study for some kind of certification. From languages to business skills to teaching, certifications act as proof of one’s interest, attitude and ability.

Certifications accomplish several purposes. First, they show employers that one is diversied. While one’s interest is not limited to only one major, he will win himself more chances of jobs than others, which is likely to result in a good-paying job and better employ ability. Besides, certifications indicate that the owner is proactive; he is not sitting around in his spare time. Instead, he is constantly looking to improve himself. This is what sets one applicant apart from the rest when applying for a sought-after position.

What’s more important is that the certifications prove that the person has great potential as he is good at study and has a good sense of balance. He has made an effort to learn more skills while keeping focused on his major or occupation.

All in all, certifications give students more confidence in the job market as they demonstrate that the owners have wider interests, more proactive attitude and stronger learning ability. (199 words)

How to Improve Students Mental Health

Students’ mental health, an issue neglected for long, has now gained increasing public concern. As to how to improve it, heated discussions are right on their way. As far as I’m concerned, the university should set up a mental health workshop to improve students’ psychological health. It’s necessary for the following reasons.

For one thing, many problems of mental disorder may be nipped in the bud. Many students may find it hard to deal with pressure from study and personal relationships, and therefore pains, puzzles and frustration may arise. The workshop will be a place for the young people to release their pressure by talking with teachers there. In the meantime, teachers may have a chance to detect signs of psychological problems in advance and take precautious measures accordingly. For another, students may know some ways to improve their mental health. If the experts of the workshop can give lectures on regular basis, those students suffering from mental disturbances will know what to do and face their problems bravely.

From the factors mentioned above, we may safely draw the conclusion that a mental health workshop can play a vital role in students’ daily life and help to protect them from mental illness. (203 words)

Self-confidence(自信)

There are many factors that can contribute to a person’s success in life. Whether he is at school or at work, a person is more likely to succeed if he is hard-working, honest, intelligent, responsible, and so on. But of all the possible characteristics that can affect one’s success, I believe self-confidence to be the most important for the following reasons.

The first reason is that when a person has self-confidence he believes in himself. He believes that he can and will succeed, and this gives him the courage to try new things. In order to be successful we must be willing to take some risks, so having self-confidence is very important. Another reason is that a confident person rarely gives up. When he fails he tries again and again until he wins. A final reason is that confident people are not afraid to show off their achievements. This is not to say that they should brag, but that they should gracefully and confidently accept the compliments of others. When their achievements are noticed more by others at school or work, they are more likely to succeed.

In short, I believe self-confidence to be the most important factor in success. It enables people to take risks, try again when they fail, and enjoy their accomplishments when they win. With these abilities, a confident person can succeed easily at school or work. (231 words)

The Power of Cooperation(合作的力量)

The intended meaning of the compelling photo above is far-reaching and affords much food for thought! One cannot help but be moved by the scene as illustrated in the caricature, where there are two handicapped men, with their broken legs tied together, running forward and leaving the dust flying behind them, with a caption under this caricature indicating: “With one leg of yours and one leg of mine, we jointly brave our way forward here and there!”

Given its profound social implication, the thought-provoking phenomenon is well worth our endeavor to explore. Undoubtedly, this cartoon arouses our deep concern over the issue of mutual support. The message conveyed in it, I suppose, is twofold.

In the first place, in contemporary society, if one wants to achieve his targets or intends to fulfill his ambitions, he has to work hard, make efforts and get prepared on the basis of his team, otherwise, he will take no advantage of opportunities when they come to visit him.

Secondly, the difference between a man who succeeds and one who does not mainly lies in the fact whether or not he could cooperate successfully with others.

As a famous quotation from the ancient Greek Aesop’s Fables put it, “United we stand, divided we fall.” We should glory in team work and helping one another; take self-seeking to be a disgrace. (226 words)

Academic Dishonesty on Campus

It is shown in the recent surveys that many college students copy papers from the Internet to save the trouble of doing their assignments. In my opinion, this kind of academic dishonesty is very harmful to these students.

First, copying papers from the Internet makes students lazy. Copying papers from the Internet seems easy and can save some time and trouble. In other words, students will become lazier and lazier. Second, students can learn little from copying others’ work. Students cannot improve their abilities just by downloading papers from the Internet without their own thinking and working. What’s worse, once students get used to academic cheating, they may also cheat in other cases in the future, which will be very dangerous for them, especially when it’s put down in the honesty record .
Therefore, in order to prevent academic dishonesty on campus, some punishments by the school may be necessary. But the most important thing is that teachers should talk to those students, and make them aware of the fact that copying others’ work cannot bring them any knowledge and that only by working hard can they improve themselves.

Read carefully the following two excerpts on grandparents babysitting kids, and then write your response in NO LESS THAN 300 WORDS, in which you should:

1. summarize the main message of the two excerpts, and then

2. express your opinion towards this issue, especially the advantages or disadvantages of grandparents babysitting kids.

Most parents appreciate it when their parents help care for their grandkids—it gives them some free time and saves them the hassle of hiring a babysitter. A lot of grandparents also love taking care of their grandkids which is why its usually a win-win situation. If that isn t enticing enough, there is also a scientific reason why seniors should babysit their grandkids.

A recent peer-reviewed study by the journal Evolution and Human Behavior in Berlin determined that grandparents who babysit their grandchildren tend to live significantly longer than those who don t. The study was done with over 500 people of 70+ years of age and it reached some very definitive conclusions.

Seniors who helped care for their grandkids had a whopping 37% lower mortality risk than adults of the same age who have no “caring responsibilities.” While science can t with 100% accuracy explain why grandparents that babysit live longer, they do have a pretty good idea.

The researchers believe that caregiving brings purpose to seniors and makes them more active, which is vital at their age. One of the authors of the study, Sonja Hilbrand, a doctoral student in the Department of Psychology at the University of Basel, Switzerland, noted that:

“This link could be a mechanism deeply rooted in our evolutionary past when help with childcare was crucial for the survival of the human species.”

The study involved medical tests and period interviews with the participants every two years between 1990 and 2009. It should be noted that the study was only focused on periodic babysitters and caregivers and not people who were looking after their grandchildren full-time.

Another researcher, Bruno Arpino, an associate professor at the Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona, said that:

“Caregiving may give caregivers a purpose in life because caregivers may feel useful for the others and for the society. Caregiving may be thought also as an activity that keeps caregivers physically and mentally active.”

Grandparents are generally thought to be good for grandchildren, but that may depend on just how much Nana and Papa spoil their grandkids, new research suggests. A meta-analysis published in PLOS One found that grandparents—notoriously determined to spoil their grandchildren and often clueless about modern medicine—may expose otherwise healthy children to sugary snacks and tobacco.

“While the results of this review are clear that behavior such as exposure to smoking and regularly treating children increases cancer risks as children grow into adulthood, it is also clear from the evidence that these risks are unintentional,” study co-author Stephanie Chambers of the University of Glasgow told the BBC.

To find out more about how grandparents impact their grandkids, Chambers and her team analyzed 56 studies across 18 countries including the U.S., UK, Japan, and China. They excluded studies in which grandparents were the primary caretakers, and focused on those that had examined how grandparents influence children s diets, exercise, weight gain, tobacco use, sun exposure, and alcohol consumption because all of these factors are known to increase the risk of cancer. The results reveal that grandparents who were described as “indulgent” often had negative impacts on diet, exercise, and overall weight gain of their grandchildren. Likewise, when grandparents smoked in front of grandkids (typically against parents  wishes), children were more likely to end up as smokers themselves.

The data suggest that grandparents, many of whom provide supplemental child care to kids, are in need of more support and information. “Currently grandparents are not the focus of public health messaging targeted at parents, and in light of the evidence from this study, perhaps this is something that needs to change given the prominent role grandparents play in the lives of children,” Chambers said in a statement.

A growing number of grandparents are now taking the responsibility of raising their grandchildren. It is a common phenomenon, mainly due to the pressure of young parents to work extra hours and cope with financial challenges. Some argue that it s a mutually beneficial arrangement, since it can relieve young parents  parenting pressure to a certain extent, especially for office workers who cannot reconcile their careers with the needs of their children. More importantly, the elderly can enjoy the company of their grandkids and the satisfaction of realizing their self-worth, which is believed to be good for their physical and mental health. But others insist that transferring the responsibilities of childcare to the elderly is likely to make kids develop bad habits because of their spoiling.

As far as I m concerned, despite an otherwise untenable situation for many working families, the impact of babysitting kids by grandparents on all parties involved is negative rather than positive. First of all, parental involvement in children s preschool education is crucial for their development. It not only has significant positive influences on kids  reading interest, language comprehension and expression ability, but also promotes their social and emotional development. And it cannot fail to be seen that children babysat by their grandparents are so much spoiled that discipline is often absent, to say the least. In the next place, though grandparents may be happy for the opportunity to spend much time with their grandchildren, babysitting kids is an exhausting job for elders who are forgetful and less physically capable.

For some of them, it also means sacrificing their personal lives and ambitions. The last thing we can t ignore is that most parents have different views of child-rearing methods from grandparents, and the disagreements may even lead to family breakdown. In consideration of these circumstances, the over-reliance on grandparenting may have adverse consequences.
Therefore, parents should always remember that taking care of their children is their own responsibility. At the same time, the government should also formulate policies to give young parents more support in raising children on their own.

接着運用first of all、in the next place和the last thing we can t ignore分條列舉論據。比如,父母參與孩子的學前教育對其發展至關重要(parental involvement in children s preschool education is crucial for their development),而由祖父母照看的孩子有可能被寵壞(children babysat by their grandparents are so much spoiled that discipline is often absent);照看孩子是一項累人的工作(babysitting kids is an exhausting job),且意味着犧牲個人的生活和目標(sacrificing their personal lives and ambitions);在育兒方面的分歧可能導致家庭破裂(the disagreements may even lead to family breakdown)。

Read carefully the following two excerpts about whether students should wear school uniforms, and then write your response in NO LESS THAN 300 WORDS, in which you should:

1. summarize the main message of the two excerpts, and then

2. express your opinion on the issue and use specific reasons to support your opinion.

For many of us school uniform consists of a colour-pop primary selection of colours, offset by darker bottoms, a button-up shirt, sensible shoes and perhaps a blazer you re destined to grow into by Year 11. But why are they imperative in the majority of our educational establishments?

The importance of uniform exists on several grounds. Uniforms quickly offer a sense of belonging, equality and can aid academic concentration. In fact, uniform is placed with such importance in the UK that it even has its own organization: The Schoolwear Association.

The SA estimates that over 90 per cent of British schools have an uniform of some entity and they make it their business to ensure that students and parents have access to good quality uniforms throughout the year. “The SA believes that a distinctive uniform brings a sense of belonging,” explained David Burgess, the association s chair, to Miss Vogue. “The Schoolwear Association promotes the benefits of a school-specific uniform to schools, students and parents. We believe them to be a positive factor in the behaviour and academic success of students inside and out of the classroom.”
Its latest study alongside Oxford Brookes University and psychologist Dr. Barbie Clarke proves this point. It found that wearing a uniform removes points of difference between students, thus unifying the student body and providing greater focus for academic work.

Uniforms—if not for creating a more egalitarian space—contribute significantly in student efficiency and productivity. As David explained: “A uniform also helps students to improve their academic concentration. Focus groups have found that many pupils chose to remain in their uniforms outside of school to complete homework, to remain in the working mindset.”

The most common argument against school uniforms is that they limit personal expression. Kids and teens use the way they dress to express themselves and to identify with certain social groups. Many students who are against school uniforms argue that they lose their self-identity when they lose their right to express themselves through fashion.

The courts have even weighed in on this. Based on the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1969 that “it can hardly be argued that either students or teachers shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate.” The First U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in 1970 that “compelled conformity to conventional standards of appearance” does not “seem a justifiable part of the educational process.”

In an era where diversity is on the rise and schools and society are attempting to teach tolerance and positive awareness of differences, requiring schoolchildren to wear uniforms emphasizes sameness and conformity. It encourages tribalism and the idea that having independent thought is not a good thing. It sends the message that being the same is positive and something to be striven for, the right way for the world to be, rather than a message that differences and independent thought and action should be valued.

Additionally, it can cause an issue for children and teens who have questions about their gender identification. It forces them to conform to gender stereotypes in their dress; most uniforms consist of skirts for girls and pants for boys. For example, if a girl feels she might be more comfortable in boyish outfits, she is blocked from making that choice if she is in a school that requires uniforms where she is forced to wear skirts. This choice could go mostly unnoticed in a school where uniforms were not required, and she could feel more comfortable in her dress choices.

The debate over whether students should wear school uniforms has been going on for a long time. While some people argue that school uniforms have a positive impact on the school environment and enable students to focus more on their studies, others see it as a practice promoting conformity that will prevent kids from expressing themselves through their clothing choices.

Personally, I m inclined to take the former side. One advantage of uniforms is the instillation of a sense of purpose. When an individual student puts on a school uniform, he or she often feels a stronger sense of identity. Wearing school uniforms also offers students the opportunity to develop a stronger work ethic, since they are more aware of the roles they are expected to play while in uniform.

Another positive aspect of school uniforms is to promote social equality. When the social playing field becomes more even, the educational environment often benefits as well. If all students are required to wear the same outfit, they are on an equal fashion footing. Students from lower economic backgrounds would conceivably face far less teasing if everyone dressed the same. In this sense, school uniforms also help to protect students  self-esteem.

Furthermore, I insist that students should focus on what they are learning rather than what they are wearing. If they aren t preoccupied with their clothes, they will pay more attention to their classwork. Therefore, to some extent, wearing school uniforms is conducive to creating a less distracting learning environment. Besides, as for what opponents have argued, what I d like to say is that students can express themselves and make themselves stand out through their character and academic performance, not their clothes.

To conclude, as an important part of being a school student, wearing a uniform is good for students to concentrate on their studies, to cultivate their sense of purpose and identity, and to protect their self-esteem.

首先表明自己贊同前者的觀點,接着運用“One advantage of uniforms is…”“Another positive aspect of school uniforms is…”

其中,第二段指出穿校服能夠培養學生的使命感(sense of purpose)、認同感(sense of identity)和職業道德感(work ethic);第三段指出穿校服的另一個積極影響是促進社會平等(promote social equality)、保護學生的自尊(protect students  self-esteem);第四段指出穿校服有助於營造一個專注的學習環境(creating a less distracting learning environment),進一步指出學生可以通過他們的個性特點和學習成績而不是着裝來表達自己,讓自己脫穎而出(students can express themselves and make themselves stand out through their character and academic performance, not their clothes)。

運用“To conclude…”

The phrase “everybody’s doing it” is very much at the center of the concept of peer pressure. It is a social influence exerted on an individual in order to get that person to act or believe in a similar way as a larger group. Most people experience it in some way during their daily work and life. The following excerpt is about peer pressure. The author presents his opinion on peer pressure. Read the excerpt carefully and write your response in NO LESS THAN 300 WORDS, in which you should:

1. summarize briefly the author s opinion;

2. give your comment.

In the United States, over 80% of college students have at least one alcoholic drink over a two-week time period. Of these college students, 40% have the habit of binge drinking (i.e., having four or more drinks) on occasion, which greatly surpasses the rate of their non-college peers. Research suggests that this discrepancy between college students and their non-college peers is largely due to the college environment. More specifically, college students must experience a transitional period from depending on their parents at home to depending on their peers on campus. Peer interaction may be essential for college students in that peers provide the guidance and support needed to circumvent this transitional period. In addition, the freshman population is particularly reliant on peer groups because they are new to the college environment and are attempting to adapt to the college lifestyle. Although peers may be an essential coping mechanism during this transitional period, the increase of peer involvement in a students everyday life may influence the increase of peer pressure as well.

Peer pressure, or the direct or indirect encouragement from one s own age group to engage in activities that they may or may not want to engage in, is a major factor in the development of students  risk-taking behavior. Peers act as an influential model by introducing, providing, or pressuring risky activities (i.e., alcohol use) to other peers. By modeling the behavior of their peers, college students are viewing alcohol use as a positive and socially acceptable experience. However, what college students fail to take into consideration are the negative consequences that are related to alcohol use, especially within a peer group. Therefore, it is imperative to understand peer pressure, as well as which groups of college students are more susceptible to it, in order to decrease these negative consequences from occurring.

The social identity theory may help to explain why college students are influenced by peer pressure. The social identity theory suggests that a significant portion of an individual s self-concept is formed through their peer groups, with the in-groups being viewed more positively than the out-groups. In a college environment, it is essential for students to be associated with the in-groups in order to be socially accepted. Out-groups, such as freshmen college students and non-drinkers, may lack the social support needed during this transitional period because they are not fitting in with the majority of their peers. More specifically, non-drinkers would be considered an out-group because they are not participating in the normative behavior of alcohol use. Subsequently, students  determined to remain non-drinkers often give in to peer pressure in order to become a part of the in-group. This phenomenon  is prevalent in freshmen college students as well. Freshmen are highly at risk for alcohol consumption because they are adapting to the college lifestyle and attempting to make new friends. Furthermore, vulnerable college groups (e.g., freshmen and non-drinkers) will give in to peer pressure in order to be socially accepted and have a successful transition to college life.

Frequently seen in colleges, peer pressure affects college students in various ways, alcohol consumption being just one of them. It is sometimes followed by motor vehicle crashes or other unintended consequences. The social identity theory explains that, a large portion of an individual s self-concept is dependent on their peer groups, so they are eager to quickly get involved in the group and become one member. Unfortunately, freshers and vulnerable college groups are more easily to be influenced.

Human beings are social animals and therefore, they, especially the teens or the young will succumb to peer pressure, whether it s positive or negative. It is very easy to get caught up in the moment when ugly and unexpected situations turn up and peer pressure kicks into high gear. What we need to be aware of is that it s natural for one to be influenced by peers. In most cases, it s due to the age and shouldn t be classified as good or bad.

The first thing one needs to know to avoid negative peer pressure is to learn to tell right from wrong. Choosing friends by making smart choices is the key to greeting the positive effects of peer pressure and keeping the negative ones at bay. One will probably forget that he has to live with the choices made inside a group. However, if the choice is contrary to one s character or core value concept, it will result in distress later and  even guilty. Besides,   strong support from family members or teachers is likely to help the young stay away from falling prey to negative peer pressure.

Learning to shield the young from negative peer pressure needs to be taught. The common but inadequate solution is to isolate the young from peers, but the ideal solution is to teach them to make good choices in life.

最後一段指出一種理想的解決方案,即to teach them to make good choices in life。
