A good book may be our best friends. It is the most patient and cheerful companions. It will never turn its back upon us when we are suffering from adversity or distress, but always show us the same kindness. When we are in youth, it cultivates our temper and increases our knowledge; when we are in age, it consoles us and encourages us. Men often discover their affinity to each other by the mutual love they have for a book just as two persons sometimes discover a friend by the admiration of a third. Books are sincere and lofty bonds of friendship. Men can exchange ideas, communicate feelings and sympathize with each other through their favorite author.
