My house is made out of wood, glass and stone. It is also made out of software.

If you come to visit, you’ll probably be surprised when you come in. Someone will give you an electronic PIN (個人身份號碼) to wear. This PIN tells the house who and where you are. The house uses this information to give you what you need. When it’s dark outside, the PIN turns on the lights nearest you, and then turns them off as you walk away from them. Music moves with you too. If the house knows your favorite music, it plays it. The music seems to be everywhere, but in fact other people in the house hear different music or no music. If you get a telephone call, only the nearest telephone rings.

Of course, you are also able to tell the house if you want something. There is a home control console (控制檯), a small machine that turns things on and off around you.

The PIN and the console are new ideas, but they are in fact like many things we have today. If you want to go to a movie, you need a ticket. If I give you my car keys, you can use my car. The car works for you because you have the keys. My house works for you because you wear the PIN or hold the console.

I believe that ten years from now, most new homes will have the systems that I’ve put in my house. The systems will probably be even bigger and better than the ones I’ve put in today.

I like to try new ideas. I know that some of my ideas will work better than others. But I hope that one day I will stop thinking of these systems as new, and ask myself instead, “How will I live without them?”

28. What does the passage mainly discuss?

A. How to develop a new system. B. The function of the PIN.

C. A home for the future. D. Easy life in the future.

29. What's the purpose when the writer wrote the fourth paragraph?

A. To let readers know why his ideas are new.

B. To let readers know how special his house is.

C. To explain the importance of the PIN and the console.

D. To explain more easily what the functions of the PIN and the console are.

30. The writer’s new house is different from ordinary ones mainly because .

A. it has been controlled by computers

B. you can make a telephone call anywhere[來源:學科網ZXXK]

C. it has your favorite music following you

D. the writer is able to change his new idea into practice

31. What is the writer most likely to be according to the passage?

A. An IT expert. B. A famous doctor.

C. An idealist. D. An experienced teacher.

D

No one is sure where and when the expression "apple-pie order" began. It’s said that the housewives of New England liked to cut their apples in pieces. Then they filled pie pans with them in an organized way, row upon row. As one writer said, the women of New England loved to have everything in its place. This perhaps explains why it generally is believed that "apple-pie order" began in New England.

Another old expression, "apple of discord", comes from ancient myth(神話),however. The myth says that all the gods and goddesses were sitting around the table to celebrate the marriage of Thetis and Peleus. One of the goddesses-Discord was a troublemaker. She threw away a golden apple on the table to be given as a prize to the most beautiful goddess.

At one time, the tomato was called a love apple. That was a mistake. In the sixteenth century, Spain brought the tomato from South America. Spain then sold the tomato to Morocco. Italian traders carried it on to Italy. The Italian name for the tomato was "pomo di Moro"-apple of the Moors. When French growers brought it in from Italy, they thought "di Moro" meant "d'amour"-the French word for love. And so "pomo di Moro" became the apple of love.

People believe many things about the apple. One belief is that it has great power of keeping people healthy. A very common expression is "an apple a day keeps the doctor away. "

Another belief is based on fact. The expression is "one rotten apple spoils the barrel." When an apple begins to go bad, it ruins all the other apples around it in the box. The expression has come to mean that one bad person in a group can cause everyone to act bad.

32. Which of the following can we know about the phrase "apple-pie order"?

A. It began in New England. [來源:學*科*網Z*X*X*K]

B. Nobody’s sure where and when it began.

C. Everyone is sure of where it began.

D. It has been put into use recently.

33. What's the meaning of "apple of discord"?

A. Cause of disagreement. B. Situation of danger.

C. Everything in agreement. D. Everything in good order.

34. What's the purpose of the third paragraph?

A. To show us a mistaken idea.

B. To tell us a love story about apple.

C. To explain how the tomato was called the apple of love.

D. To show how the tomato was brought in from south America.

35. Which of the following expressions is about health?

A. Apple of discord. B. Apple-pie order.

C. One rotten apple spoils the barrel. D. An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

"Teenagers need to build experience so that they can do a better job in making the difficult and risky decisions in later life. ‘Should I take this job? or ‘ 39 ’ ”said Valerie Reyna, co –author of the study.

“40 If they don't make a mistake in their teenage years, they will have no life experience when they turn 18 and step out of their parents' protection and into a world that 's unknown to them. Kids need the freedom to test out their limits while still in a safe environment,” wrote Ann Robinson, editor of The Guardian.

Ask Dr. Jeffers?

This month Dr. Jeffers is answering questions about the human brain and how it works.

Dear Dr. Jeffers,

One of my colleagues, Felix Moeller, told me that scientists are learning to use computers to ‘read minds’. Is there any truth to this story?

—Jane Leon, New York, USA

Dear Ms. Leon,

Well, a lot of research is being conducted in this area, but so far, the brain scanning equipment and corresponding computer programs haven’t been able to actually read thoughts. In one experiment, test subjects(受試者)were connected to scanning equipment and shown two numbers on a screen. They were then asked to choose between adding or subtracting(減)the two numbers. Using this method, researchers were able to follow brain processes and make the correct assumptions(假設)70 percent of the time. It’s not quite mind reading, but it’s certainly a first step.

—Dr. J.

Dear Dr. Jeffers,

My three-year-old son loves it when I dig my fingers into his sides and tickle (胳肢)him until he laughs uncontrollably. The other day I noticed him trying to tickle himself but he couldn’t do it. Why not?

—Glenn Lewis, Vancouver, Canada

Dear Mr. Lewis,

It’s because of how the brain works. The brain is trained to know what to pay attention to and what to ignore. It causes us to ignore physical feelings we expect to happen, but it causes a mild panic reaction when there is an unexpected feeling. For example, you don’t notice how your shoulder feels while you’re walking down the street. But if someone comes up behind you and touches you lightly on the shoulder, you may jump in fear. It’s that unexpected part that causes the tickle reaction.

—Dr. J.

1. What can we learn from the answer to the first question?

A. Some equipment is able to read human minds.

B. Some progress has been made in mind reading.

C. Test subjects have been used to make decisions.

D. Computer programs can copy brain processes.

2. People laugh when tickled by others because the feeling is _______.

A. unexpected B. expected C. comfortable D. uncomfortable

3. Who has got a little child according to the text?

A. Ms. Leon B. Mr. Lewis C. Mr. Moeller D. Dr. Jeffers

4. According to the text, Jeffers is probably _______.

A. a computer programmer B. a test subject

C. a human brain expert D. a medical doctor

B

When her five daughters were young, Helene An always told them that there was strength in unity (團結). To show this, she held up one chopstick, representing one person. Then she easily broke it into two pieces. Next, she tied several chopsticks together, representing a family. She showed the girls it was hard to break the tied chopsticks. This lesson about family unity stayed with the daughters as they grew up.

Helene An and her family own a large restaurant business in California. However, when Helene and her husband Danny left their home in Vietnam in 1975, they didn’t have much money. They moved their family to San Francisco. There they joined Danny’s mother, Diana, who owned a small Italian sandwich shop. Soon afterwards, Helene and Diana changed the sandwich shop into a small Vietnamese restaurant. The five daughters helped in the restaurant when they were young. However, Helene did not want her daughters to always work in the family business because she thought it was too hard.

Eventually the girls all graduated from college and went away to work for themselves, but one by one, the daughters returned to work in the family business. They opened new restaurants in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Even though family members sometimes disagreed with each other, they worked together to make the business successful. Daughter Elizabeth explains, “Our mother taught us that to succeed we must have unity, and to have unity we must have peace. Without the strength of the family, there is no business.”

Their expanding business became a large corporation in 1996, with three generations of Ans working together. Now the Ans’ corporation makes more than $20 million each year. Although they began with a small restaurant, they had big dreams, and they worked together. Now they are a big success.

Why play games? Because they are fun, and a lot more besides. Following the rules… planning your next move… acting as a team member… these are all “game” ideas that you will come across throughout your life.

Think about some of the games you played as a young child, such as rope-jumping and hide-and-seek. Such games are entertaining and fun. But perhaps more importantly, they translate life into exciting dramas that teach children some of the basic rules they will be expected to follow the rest of their lives, such as taking turns and cooperating (合作) .

Many children’s games have a practical side. Children around the world play games that prepare them for work they will do as grown-ups. For instance, some Saudi Arabian children play a game called bones, which sharpens the hand-eye coordination(協調)needed in hunting.

Many sports encourage national or local pride. The most famous games of all, the Olympic Games, bring athletes from around the world together to take part in friendly competition. People who watch the event wave flags, knowing that a gold medal is a win for an entire country, not just the athlete who earned it. For countries experiencing natural disasters or war, an Olympic win can mean so much.

Sports are also an event that unites people. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. People on all continents play it—some for fun and some for a living. Nicolette Iribarne, a Californian soccer player, has discovered a way to spread hope through soccer. He created a foundation to provide poor children with not only soccer balls but also a promising future.

Next time you play your favorite game or sport, think about why you enjoy it, what skills are needed, and whether these skills will help you in other aspects of your life.

9. Through playing hide-and-seek, children are expected to learn to ________.

A. be a team leader B. obey the basic rules

C. act as a grown-up D. predict possible danger

10. The underlined part in Paragraph 2 most probably means that games can________.

A. describe life in an exciting way

B. turn real-life experiences into a play

C. make learning life skills more interesting

D. change people’s views of sporting events

11. According to the passage, why is winning Olympic medals so encouraging?

A. It inspires people’s deep love for the country.

B. It proves the exceptional skills of the winners.

C. It helps the country out of natural disasters.

D. It earns the winners fame and fortune.

12. Iribarne’s goal of forming the foundation is to _______.

A. bring fun to poor kids

B. provide soccer balls for children

Even though it was only October, my students were already whispering about Christmas plans. With each passing day everyone became more 19 waiting for the final school bell. Upon its 20 everyone would run for their coats and go home, everyone except David.

In the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what “keeping up with the Joneses” is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbors.

The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighborhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbors.

It was like a race, but one could never finish his race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment in New York City.

Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich lifestyle of their neighbors. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it “Keeping up with the Joneses” because “Jones” is a very common name in the United States. “Keeping up with the Joneses” came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momand’s series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years.

People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are “Jonses” in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.

56. Some people want to keep up with the Joneses because they _______.

A. want to be as rich as their neighbors B. want others to know or to think that they are rich

C. don’t want others to know they are rich D. want to be happy

A. live outside New York City B. live in New York city C. live in apartments D. have many neighbors

A. an important name B. a popular name in the United States

C. his neighbor’s name D. not a good name

59. According to the writer, it is ____________ to keep up with the Joneses.

A. correct B. interesting C. impossible D. good

60. What’s the author’s attitude to keeping up with the Joneses?

A. Negative B. Positive C. Objective D. Supportive

After years of research and testing, the hybrid car was developed and put on the market. It’ s an interesting and exciting new improvement in today’ s world as we look for better ways to protect the quality of the air we breathe and conserve our natural resources.

The quality of our air is affected by many different things. But one of the largest sources of air pollution is the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and gasoline which is used to power a car’ s engine. The EPA has set national standards to help control the level of harmful pollutants sent off into the air, and the automobile industry has acted by producing a hybrid car that uses less gas and therefore causes less pollution.

A hybrid car is a combination of a regular car that runs on gasoline and an electric car that is battery powered. Some people tend to think that since the hybrid car is partially electric, you have to plug it in to charge it. But that’s not how it works. The 144volt battery pack is actually recharged through the energy that is produced when the car’s brakes are used. This is referred to as “regenerative braking”, because it generates electricity.

Although the hybrid car still runs on gasoline most of the time, this helps it use less gas than a regular car. When the driver stops at a traffic light, the engine automatically shuts off to save fuel. Then, as soon as the driver puts the car in gear and touches the gas pedal, the engine starts back up.

Have you ever ridden in a car with someone who ran out of gas? That probably wouldn’t happen if you were riding in a hybrid car. It flashes a warning on its computer screen that says, “I am low on gas”. When it completely runs out, the warning reads, “YOU ARE NOW OUT OF GAS!” Then the electric power supply kicks in to let the driver travel a few more miles to a gas station.

61. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A. The hybrid car will be put on the market.

B. Hybrid cars run faster than regular cars.

C. When the hybrid car stops at a traffic light, the driver will get a warning.

D. The burning of fossil fuels is one of the largest sources of air pollution.

62. According to the passage, the word “hybrid” refers to ________.

A. a high-tech discovery B. energy saving C. a new invention D. a combination of two things

63. “Regenerative breaking” is an important process of the hybrid car because ________.

A. it allows the car to come to a quick stop B. it gives the driver a smoother ride

C. it produces energy to charge the battery D. it can control the speed of the car

64. Which of the following is right about the EPA?

Dear Seth,

You’re only three years old, and at this point in your life you can’t read, much less understand what I’ll tell you in this letter. But I’ve been thinking a lot about the life that you have ahead of you, about my life so far as I reflect on what I’ve learned, and about my role as a dad in trying to prepare you for the trials(磨難) that you’ll face in the coming years.

You won’t be able to understand this letter today, but somebody, when you’re ready, I hope you will find some wisdom and value in what I share with you.

You are young, and life has not yet to show a cold face to you, to throw disappointments and loneliness and pain into your path. You have not been worn down yet by long hours of thankless work, by the slings and arrows of everyday life.

For this, be thankful. You are at a wonderful time of life. You have many wonderful stages of life still to come, but they are not without their costs and perils.

I hope to help you along your path by sharing some of the best of what I’ve learned. As with any advice, take it with a grain of salt. What works for me might not work for you.

Life Can Be Cruel

There will be people in your life who won't be very nice. They’ll tease you because you’re different, or for no good reason. They might try to bully you or hurt you.

There’s not much you can do about these people except to learn to deal with them, and learn to choose friends who are kind to you, who actually care about you, who make you feel good about yourself. When you find friends like this, hold on to them, treasure them, spend time with them, be kind to them, love them.

There will be times when you are met with disappointment instead of success. Life won’t always turn out the way you want. This is just another thing you’ll have to learn to deal with. But instead of letting these things get you down, push on. Accept disappointment and learn to persevere, to pursue your dreams despite pitfalls. Learn to turn negatives into positives, and you’ll do much better in life.

You will also face heartbreak and abandonment by those you love. I hope you don’t have to face this too much, but it happens. Again, not much you can do but to heal, and to move on with your life. Let these pains become stepping stones to better things in life, and learn to use them to make you stronger.

But Be Open to life Anyway

Yes, you’ll find cruelty and suffering in your journey through life, but don’t let that close you to new things. Don’t move back from life, don’t hide or wall yourself off. Be open to new things, new experiences, new people.

You might get your heart broken 10 times, but find the most wonderful woman the 11th time. If you shut yourself off from love, you’ll miss out on that woman, and the happiest times of your life.

You might get teased and bullied and hurt by people you meet, and then after meeting dozens of jerks, find a true friend. If you close yourself off to new people, and don’t open your heart to them, you’ll avoid pain…, but also lose out on meeting some incredible people, who will be there during the toughest times of your life and create some of the best times of your life.

You will fail many times but if you allow that to stop you from trying, you will miss out on the amazing feeling of success once you reach new heights with your accomplishments. Failure is a stepping stone to success.

Life Isn’t a Competition

You will meet many people who will try to do better than you, in school, in college, at work. They’ll try to have nicer cars, bigger houses, nicer clothes, cooler gadgets. To them, life is a competition—they have to do better than their peers to be happy.

Here’s the secret: life isn’t a competition. It's a journey. If you spend that journey always trying to impress others, to outdo others, you’re wasting your journey. Instead, learn to enjoy the journey. Make it a journey of happiness, of constant learning, of continual improvement, of love.

Don’t worry about having a nicer car or house or anything material, or even a better-paying job. None of that matters a whit, and none of it will make you happier. You’ll acquire these things and then only want more. Instead, learn to be satisfied with having enough—and then use the time you would have wasted trying to earn money to buy those things… use that time doing things you love.

Finally, know that I love you and always will. You are starting out on an unknown, tiring, scary, but badly wonderful journey, and always remember I will be there for you when I can. Godspeed

Four Simple Ways to Better Your Writing

Keep It Simple

My first tip for improving your writing is: keep it simple.

Now, I know this seems really, really obvious, but I always say to my students, “Simple done right is better than complicated(複雜的) done wrong.” In other words, it’s better to keep things simple and do it well, rather than over-complicate(使過分複雜) everything and do it badly.

So, in English writing exams, you want to show off your English, but you want to show off your right English, not all this English that you don’t know or haven’t learnt yet.

Have a Collection of Set Phrases(固定搭配)

Now that leads me on to point number two. In order to avoid making mistakes in your writing, it’s a really, really good idea to have a collection of set phrases and key words that you can use in the exam. Now, you do have to be careful with this. You don’t want to practice what you’re going to write, but you do want to have a nice collection of things and have key phrases prepared. Make sure that you have different ways to …

Compare:in the same way, at the same time

Give your opinion:from my point of view, in my view

Add information(補充): in addition, besides

Show cause:owing to, due to

Show effect:as a result, in consequence, therefore

Conclude:in short, in conclusion, in summary

So, that’s just a very brief list showing you exactly what you need to study to be fully prepared for any English writing exam.

Reduce Your Word Count(精簡字數)

Now, point number three: reduce your word count. Use as few words as possible.

Avoid pointless words like very, a lot. Replace them, instead, with a strong word. So, instead of saying “so scared,” I would say, “terrified.” By using strong words, you can reduce your word count by a fair bit.

Another way is avoiding there is and there are. We want everything to be as clear as possible. Thus, you can increase the quality and the clarity(清楚,清晰) of your writing.

Check Your Work

Tip number four: this is one that you have heard in school so many times. Students will make some stupid mistakes when they’re writing. After being asked to correct the mistakes, they will say, “we already know this. So easy!” and it’s because they don’t check their work.

I know, when you finish an exam, you’re like, “Ah, I’m done! I want to move to the next question!” But you can avoid so many point deductions(扣除) just by checking through your work, so make it priority(優先的事)。

I personally think it’s much better if you write less and check more. Fewer words, high accuracy(準確率). Then you will make your writing perfect.

八、作文:參考作文

Recently our class held a heated discussion about whether our parents should be allowed to see our Moments.

There are 30% of the students who are for it. the reasons are as follows: Firstly, as teenagers, we need our parents’ guidance especially in terms of social experience. Secondly, Without parents’ involvement, the generation gap between our parents and us may tend to become bigger and bigger. Instead, parents’ involvement can lead to better communication and a closer relationship between parents and children.

However, 70% of the students argue against it. For one thing, we hold the view that everyone needs some privacy. If parents are allowed to see our Moments, we won’t have our own secrets. For another thing, the Moments of WeChat is mainly a way of communicating with friends of our own age. If our parents are allowed to see it, we can’t share our thoughts with our friends freely.

In my opinion, it is meaningful to let parents see our Moments, which makes them happy and stops them from worrying about me. Besides, our parents feel like seeing our Moments, which shows their care and love for us.
