These days, Chinese children are sometimes 41 on weekends than weekdays because they have to take 42 after-school classes. Many of them are learning exam skills _43__ they can get into a good high school and later a good university. Others are practicing spor ts in order that they can compete and win. However, this doesn’t only happen in China.

The Taylors are a typical American family. Life for Cathy Taylor’s three children is very busy. “On most days after school,”Cathy says, “I take one of my two boys to basketball practice and my daughter to football training. Then I have to take my other son to piano lessons. Maybe I could 44 a few of their activities, but I believe these activities are important for my children’s future. I really want them 45 successful.” However, the 46 children don’t get home until after 7:00 p.m. They have a quick dinner, and then it’s time to do homework.

Linda Miller, a mother of three, knows all about such stress. “In some families, competition starts very young and continues until the kids get older,” she says. “Mothers send their small kids 47 all kinds of classes. And they are always comparing them with other children. It’s crazy. I don’t think that’s fair. Why don’t they just let their kids be kids? People shouldn’t push their kids so hard.”

Doctors say 48 pressure is not good 49 a child’s development. Dr. Alice Green says all these activities can cause a lot of stress for children. “Kids should have time 50 and think for themselves, too. Although it’s normal to want successful children, it’s even more important to have happy children.

Do teenagers in small villages do chores at home? How about the teenagers in big cities? Here is a survey. We asked 4,000 teenagers in China several questions. Half of them come from big cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. The others are from small villages. We made a diagram(圖表) of the result o f our survey. Let’s have a look at it. We found out that teenagers from small villages do more chores than those from big cities. Maybe it is because they live a harder life. Healthy eating doesn’t just mean what you eat, but how you eat. Here is some advice on healthy eating.

Eat with others. It can help you to see others’ healthy eating habits. If you usually eat with your parents, you will find that the food you eat is more delicious.

Listen to your body. Ask yourself if you are really hungry. Have a glass of water to see if you are thirsty—sometimes you are just thirsty, you need no food. Stop eating before you feel full.

Eat breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. After you don’t eat for the past ten hours, your body needs food to get you going. You will be smarter after eating breakfast.

Eat healthy snacks like fruits, yogurt or cheese. We all need snacks sometimes. In fact, it’s a good idea to eat two healthy snacks between your three meals This doesn’t mean that you can eat a bag of chips instead of a meal.

Don’t eat dinner late. With our busy life, we always put off eating dinner until the last minute. Try to eat dinner at least 3 hours before you go to bed. This will give your body a chance to digest most of the food before you rest for the next 8—10 hours.

People often say that the doorway(門口) is the safest place in a house during an earthquake. Is that true?

According to the scientists, the doorway isn’t stronger than the rest of the house. And if you are in a public place, it will not protect you, but get you in danger.

So what is the safest place in a house? If you’re inside, you’d better stay under a desk or table. Standing against the wall is safer than standing in the doorway. Kneeling(屈膝) or lying on the ground is also safer than standing. It is important for you to stay away from glass, because things made of glass are easy to fall and break during an earthquake. So you’d better find something like a pillow(枕頭) to cover your head and face.

One of the things you need to do is to make sure that your mind doesn’t wander(漫遊). It’s easy to start thinking about other things, especially when you’re not interested in the subject. 62

Finally, you need to take notes because you will not remember everything the teacher said. You’ll have to take down the notes so that you can study it after class. 65 Listening isn’t always easy, but if you follow these simple steps, you’ll be much more successful in your classes.

A. Here are some suggestions.

B. You’ll also need to look at the teacher.

In the past, people just read books, only books. Today, we have books online, which makes reading easy. The web, our new storehouse of information, is just a click away. The more you read, the more creative you will become. Reading dev elops vocabulary, improves language skills and sharpens(使敏捷)your problem-solving abilities. Reading gives you knowledge and make you more confident. The more you read about others' life experiences, the better decision-maker you will become.
