The bell of the castle was ringing. It was exactly midnight. Suddenly a ghost in the form of the late king appeared in the darkness. It looked pale and sad. Looking at the ghost, the two guards of the castle and Horatio, Hamlet'’s best friend, were surprised and terrified. The next day they went to Hamlet and told him that they had seen the ghost of King Hamlet. Hamlet doubted it at first, but wanted to make sure himself. He asked them to take him to see the ghost that night. They agreed.

Late at night Hamlet, Horatio and one of the guards went to the top of the walls. It was very cold and dark there. Some time after they got there, the ghost in armor(盔甲)suddenly appeared out of the darkness. Hamlet saw that the ghost was exactly like his dead father. He called out, "King, Father! Why did you come here out of the grave?" The ghost did not answer him, but looked at him sadly and made a sign for him to follow. While Hamlet and the ghost walked away into the darkness, his friends had to wait anxiously there worrying about his safe return.

At the end of the walls of the castle the ghost stopped and began to talk to Hamlet, "I am the ghost of your father. I wanted to rule Denmark peacefully until you grew up and became king after me. But two months ago, while I was sleeping in the beautiful garden of the castle, my brother Claudius came and put poison into my ear. I was instantly killed. Hamlet! Be brave and kill him for me. But never kill or hurt my wife, for she is your mother. Let her repent for what she has done. That is enough for her. "

According to a new survey, children raised with pets feel more confident, caring and responsible than those raised without pets. Conducted by Pets at Home, the survey of 1, 000 pet-owning children suggests that those who share a home with one or more pets are not only just physically healthier but also enjoy mental health benefits from pet ownership.

Nearly half of survey respondents(受試者)reported that living with a pet makes them happier. Thirty percent of those surveyed said they feel calmer in the presence of pets, and twenty percent said their pets actually make them feel more intelligent.

Wildlife TV presenter Michaela Strachan said she has seen evidence of those findings in her own children in an interview. “I have a seven-year-old son and three older stepchildren(繼子). We have a Jack Russell Terrier and my stepdaughter has two rescue dogs. Toto, our dog, is part of our family and has brought huge benefits to Ollie, my son. Jade’s two rescue dogs, Marley and Timmy, have had a really positive impact,” she said.

The survey also notes that more than a third of children living with pets said they have become more caring, and that they feel a greater overall sense of responsibility. Twenty percent of survey participants said having pets makes them feel more confident when speaking with others.

Parents who worried that pets will distract their children from their studies should allay those concerns: the majority (79%) of those surveyed claimed that their pets have had a positive effect on their homework.

Strachan agrees. “Owning a pet can bring so much pleasure to a family. It can increase a child’s sense of responsibility, nurture (培養) a more caring attitude and develop self-confidence and, in the case of having a dog, it encourages kids to go outside more. There can be so many benefits.”

Tips to Maintain a Positive Parent-Child Relationship

Just like any relationship, building a positive relationship between parent and child is one that requires work and effort to make it strong and successful. Parenting is a tough job, and maintaining close relationships and open communications helps to ensure parents and their children stay connected through all ages of their upbringing. Here are 5 simple tips for enhancing the bond between parent and child.

1. Eat meals as a family

You've heard this before, and it is really important! Eating together sets the stage for conversation and sharing. 16 . When schedules permit, really talk and enjoy one another. It can become a quality time most remembered by young and old alike.

2. Play with your children

The key is to really play with your children. Play with dolls, balls, make-believe, checkers, sing songs, or whatever is fun and interesting. 17 . Let kids see your silly side. Older kids enjoy cards, chess, computer games, while younger ones will have fun playing about anything... as long as it involves you!

3. 18

Parents sometimes unconsciously miss out on opportunities to develop closer relationships by not allowing their children to help them with various tasks and chores. Unloading groceries after going to the store is a good example of something that children of most ages can and should assist with. Choosing which shoes look better with your dress lets a child know you value her opinion.

4. Develop and maintain a special bedtime ritual(慣例)

For younger children, reading a favorite bedtime book or telling stories is a ritual that will be remembered most likely throughout their life. 19 . Once children start reading, have them read a page, chapter, or short book to you. Even most teenagers still enjoy the ritual of being told goodnight in a special way by a parent—— even if they don't act like it!

5. Establish a special name or code word

Create a special name for your child that is positive and special or a secret code word that you can use between each other. 20 . The code word can be established to have special meaning between your child and you that only you two understand. This code word can even be used to extract a child from an uncomfortable situation without causing undue embarrassment to the child.

A. Use the name as a simple enhancement of your love

B. Turn the TV off, and don't rush through a meal

C. Let your children help you

D. It doesn't matter what you play, just enjoy each other

E. Older children should not be neglected either

F. Seek out one-on- one opportunities often

G. Create opportunities that children will remember in the future

書面表達參考範文(116詞)

Dear Mrs Li,

I am Jim, Li Hua’s pen pal from America. I am writing to share my opinions with you on how to raise a child in a healthy way. From Li Hua’s last letter, I know that he should only care about his school subjects and that he has no freedom to choose to do things he likes such as going shopping and helping you with some light house chores.

In fact, these activities are of great help to him in the long run. If Li Hua goes on like this, I am afraid that he will become less out-going and independent.

To make him become a happy and well-rounded person, I think he needs to be given some responsibility from time to time and a sense of responsibility will benefit him at school. Moreover, he should have chances to develop his social skills.

Yours,

Jim
