Pan是盆的意思。Pan out是淘金用語。十九世紀的加州是人們實現黃金夢的寶地，淘金的人蜂擁而至。他們用陶金盆pan把沙子洗掉叫做pan out the sand，泥沙隨水流去之後，如果運氣好的話，盤上就會留下金燦燦的顆粒，那就是淘金成功了。由此，而產生了習語pan out，用來表示“成功，好結果”。
