首先從音節的角度考慮語音語調的問題。寫到這，肯定有讀者質疑語音語調更應該與單詞，句子放在一起考慮。這個道理我固然知道，只是實際情況是中國考生很難在短時間內在單詞連音、重度或者句子的語調上有重大突破，這正如讓一個參加漢語水平等級考試的美國人在短時間內搞定漢語中的兒化音一樣困難，非經過長時間專業指導和訓練不可。對於中國托福考生來說，做到吐音清晰是第一步，也是最重要的一步。畢竟這是機考，考官聽不清，考生沒有像雅思那樣立即被Pardon的機會。
第二步便是字詞，通覽官方評分標準，沒有提及所謂的高級詞彙，拿四分的要求也只是： “Contains generally effective word choice. Though some minor (systematic) errors or imprecise use may be noticeable, they do not obscure meaning”. 到這可能又有讀者質疑“enthusiastic about” 比起“crazy about” 在表達喜歡時不如後者 “effective”? 其實這個問題又回到了音節的語音語調上來，中國學生很少能讀準“enthusiastic about”，如果知道它和“crazy about”一個意思，還要冒着吐音不夠清晰的險爲了給考官一個“高級”的印象可能得不償失，因爲到時考官可能不知你要說什麼。總的來說，從選詞來看，用自己最拿手的最重要，這樣纔可能表意清晰，否則可能要冒“obscure meaning”的險丟分。再強調一句，我沒說丟更多的分，是因爲標準裏面沒有說用初中詞彙會扣分。
到了句子這個層面也是一樣，引述評分標準：“the response demonstrates good control of basic and complex grammatical structures that allow for coherent and efficient expression of relevant ideas”. 複雜的語法結構固然重要，但是做不到使句子之間結構條理清晰的“複雜”也是徒勞，反而不如簡單句表意來得明瞭有效。而且筆者注意到，拿到三分的標準隻字未提一定要使用複雜的句式結構。所有除了極少數具有衝擊滿分實力的同學可以嘗試使用複雜結構，並不建議其他的大多數同學使用，對於這些同學來說，句子之間簡明清晰地結構更重要。
最後一點從段落篇章的角度講，無論是總分總的結構，還是一議一例的結構，語意段之間的停頓時必須的，做筆記的時候用用關係詞也可以幫助自己強化已經理清的思路。只有這樣，考生才能給考官一個整體明晰的思路。筆者也建議答題最好開門見山，這是實現清晰最大化的捷徑，畢竟考官給點算分。
