1. What public holidays do you have in your country?

We’ve got loads of them, for example, the one that’s just passed was the National Day holiday, and then we’ve got the Spring Festival of course - that’s probably the most important one - which is at the beginning of the year, sometime around, like, late January, beginning of February, that kind of time. And uh, what else do we have? Uh…oh yeah, the Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, and um… there are a few others as well but I can’t remember them all off-hand I’m afraid!

2. Do people in your country celebrate Christmas?

Um…it’s kind of hard to generalize, but I would say, to an extent, yeah. I mean, by and large, it’s the younger generation that tend to celebrate Christmas, but they don’t celebrate it in the way Westerners would. You know, in the West, people go to church, open presents, um…whereas over here, it’s kind of like, just, “let’s get together for a party, go to KTV…” that sort of thing. So it is celebrated, but just in a slightly different least that’s my understanding anyway!

3. Do you like public holidays?

Yeah I do. You know, it gives me the opportunity to be together with my family for a bit, take some time off, so yeah, I always tend to look forward to them.

4. Which public holidays do you like the most?

That’s a good question……. I guess I would have to say The Spring Festival, which I’m sure is most people’s favourite, the main reason being that it’s by far the most important festival in our culture. And so everything feels just a bit different during that time. You know, everyone seems happier, the streets are livelier, and it’s basically just like one long party which stretches on for a week or two. And, it’s also probably the only time of year you can eat and drink to your heart’s content without feeling guilty about it!

5. What do other people in your country usually do on public holidays?

I can’t speak for everyone, but I guess most people either stay at home or go travelling. And if you’ve ever stayed in China during a public holiday, you’ll have seen for yourself the hordes of people that flock to all the tourist spots, right across the country.

6. What would you like to do during the next public holiday?

Umm…I haven’t really given it much thought actually! But seeing as I went travelling during the last one, I’ll probably just take it easy and spend the time chilling out at home. Something like that!

7. Do you think public holidays are important?

Yeah, I think they really are, cos I mean, here in China, the public holidays are always on a certain festival, so it’s one way of helping maintain all the various customs and traditions we have. Just to give you an example, if you took away the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, it probably wouldn’t get the attention it deserved, and over time, people might simply stop bothering with all the customs that are associated with the festival, like dragon-boat racing. So yeah, I think it’s pretty important that we continue to have them.

8. Do you think there should be more public holidays in your country?

No, not really, if I’m gonna be honest with you. I mean, I think we have enough as it is. Almost every month there seems to be a public holiday of some sort, and you know, I think that’s more or less enough. There’s no need to go over the top with them , otherwise, ……. , I guess it would break up the momentum of our daily lives, if that makes sense!

4W— When, Where, Who, What, Why;

1H— How

Describe a festival that is popular in your country.

You should say:

What the festival is

What time of year it is

What people do during this festival

Whether this festival has changed in recent years.

就该题而言,what time=when, what people do=how, 对照4W+1H, 我们还可以自己加三点提示,即where to celebrate, with whom to spend,和why it is important to celebrate。

(what)The Spring Festival, is one of themajor traditional festivals in China.

(when)It falls on the first day of the first lunar month.

(what to do)Ways to celebrate the Chinese new year vary from place to place, but generally speaking, setting fireworks and firecrackers is a shared tradition and people across China decorate their house with the red color.

(whether)In recent years, Spring festival is more like a time for family get-together and personal relaxation , not a tradition to celebrate.

(where) Chinese people would like to spend the holiday at home, watching TV or playing mahjong.

(who) On this day, family members who study or work away from home all come back and stay together. It is a time for family reunion.

(why) It is essential to have such a festival to celebrate, coz it offers the working people a chance to slow down, to strengthen the family bond and more importantly, to remember their tradition.

Purpose of festivals and celebrations

Q: Why do you think festivals are important events in the working year?

Answer:

Yeah. It’s very important for two reasons.

For the country, it’s a time to remember our cultural origin and our historical past.

The whole country celebrates our root and it’s very inspiring.

We become so proud of our past.

I guess that’s why festivals are important.

For the individual, festivals give us a chance for relaxation as we often have a few days off. It’s a time of fun, meeting friends, entertainment.

So after that we feel like a new man.

In a sense, holidays restore our balance between work and leisure.

That’s also why we need festivals for China.

Q: Would you agree that the original significance of festival is often lost today?

Answer:

I think the original significance for festivals are to celebrate our tradition.

It’s an end to the old year and the beginning of a new year. So it’s a connecting day.

But today, people are so busy, they’re under so much pressure and they no longer feel the transition between the old and the new year. Some companies even ask their employees to come in on holidays. So many people begin to feel that festivals are just as common as the other days.

People no longer take the opportunities of festivals to honor their tradition,

but go shopping, go to restaurant to entertain instead.

So I think tradition is out, consumption is in.

Festivals provide people such an excuse to put down their work, to spend money and be extravagant (奢侈的), and to meet people that they don’t have time for during the working year.

So in this sense, even the original significance is lost, festivals are still exciting.

(163 words)

Q: Do you think that new festivals will be introduced in the future? What kind?

Answer:

The world is changing so fast.

People are embracing new lifestyles as East and West come together.

Westerners begin to eat dumplings with chopsticks to celebrate Chinese Spring Festival. And Chinese young people exchange chocolates and roses on Valentine’s day. So, you see? People are experimenting with new life patterns.

And it’s quite possible that new festivals may be invented or introduced.

Wouldn’t that be cool?

What kind? Well, I don’t know for sure because it’s the future right?

But I heard this year, in my country, some people celebrated the men’s day, which is on August the third.

It’s dorky. (书呆子) But it’s new and exciting, right.

Will it last? I don’t know.

All I know is that this is an interesting attempt.

Describe a western festival that you should say:what the festival is; when the festival is celebrated ;how you celebrate it and why you celebrate it. Describe a festival that you have heard about but never should say:who you heard about it from; what the festival is; when and how the festival is celebrated and whether you ‘d like to celebrate it.
