The Most Beautiful Flower

The park bench was deserted as I sat down to read beneath the long, straggly branches of an old willow tree. Disillusioned by life with good reason to frown, for the world was intent on dragging me down.

And if that weren't enough to ruin my day, a young boy out of breath approached me, all tired from play. He stood right before me with his head tilted down and said with great excitement, “Look what I found!”

In his hand was a flower, and what a pitiful sight, with its petals all worn—not enough rain, or too little light. Wanting him to take his dead flower and go off to play, I faked a small smile and then shifted away.

But instead of retreating he sat down next to my side and placed the flower to his nose and declared with surprise, “It sure smells pretty and it's beautiful, too. That's why I picked it; here, it's for you.”

The weed before me was dying or dead, not vibrant of colors, orange, yellow or red. But I knew I must take it, or he might never leave. So I reached for the flower, and replied, “Just what I need.”

But instead of him placing the flower in my hand, he held it mid-air without reason or plan. It was then that I noticed for the very first time, that the boy could not see: he was blind.

I heard my voice quiver, tears shone like the sun. As I thanked him for picking the very best one, “You're welcome,” he smiled, and then ran off to play, unaware of the impact he'd had on my day.

I sat there and wondered how he managed to see a selfpitying woman beneath an old willow tree. How did he know of my self-indulged plight? Perhaps from his heart, he'd been blessed with true sight.

Through the eyes of a blind child, at last I could see, the problem was not with the world; the problem was with me. And for all of those times I myself had been blind, I vowed to see beauty. Then I held that wilted flower up to my nose, breathed in the fragrance of a beautiful rose and smiled as that young her weed in his hand was about to change the life of an unsuspecting old man.

Is It Worth It?

Horror gripped the heart of the World War I soldier as he saw his lifelong friend fall in battle. Caught in a trench with continuous gunfire whizzing over his head, the soldier asked his lieutenant if he might go out into the "No Man's Land" between the trenches to bring his fallen comrade back. "You can go, “said the Lieutenant, “but I don't think it will be worth it. Your friend is probably dead and you may throw your own life away."

The Lieutenant's words didn't matter, and the soldier went anyway. Miraculously he managed to reach his friend, hoisted him onto his shoulder, and brought him back to their company's trench.

As the two of them tumbled in together to the bottom of the trench, the officer checked the wounded soldier, then looked kindly at his friend。"I told you it wouldn't be worth it,"he said."Your friend is dead, and you are mortally wounded." "It was worth it, though, sir, "the soldier said.”How do you mean, 'worth it'?"responded the Lieutenant."Your friend is dead!" "Yes sir," the private answered."But it was worth it because when I got to him, he was still alive, and I had the satisfaction of hearing him say, 'Jim,I knew you'd come.'"

Many a time in life, whether a thing is worth doing or not really depends on how you look at it. Take up all your courage and do something your heart tells you to do so that you may not regret not doing it later in life.

Who you love

John was waiting for the girl whose heart he knew ,but whose face he didn’t ,the girl with the rose。Thirteen months ago,in a Florida library he took a book off the shelf and found himself intrigued with the notes in the margin 。The soft handwriting reflected a thoughtful soul and insightful mind。

In front of the book, he discovered the previous owner’s name ,Miss Hollis Maynell。With time and effort he located her address。He wrote her a letter introducing himself and inviting her to correspond 。

During the next year and one-month the two grew to know each other through the mail。Romance was budding 。John requested a photograph, but she refused。She felt that if he really cared,it wouldn’t matter what she looked like。Later they scheduled their first meeting——7:00pm at Grand Central Station in New York。

“You’ll recognize me”,she wrote,“by the red rose I’ll be warring on my lapel”,So at 7:00hw was in the station looking for the girl with the red rose。

A young woman in a green suit was coming toward him,her figure long and slim and her eyes were blue as flowers。Almost uncontrollably he made one step closer to her ,and just at this moment one step closer to her,and just at this moment he sew Hollis Maynell——a woman well past 40。The girl was walking quickly away 。He felt as though he split in two ,so keen was his desire to follow her,and yet so deep was his longing for the woman whose spirit had truly companioned him and upheld his own 。

He did not hesitate。He squared his shoulders and said,“I’m John ,and you must be Miss Maynell,I am so glad you could meet me ,may I take you to dinner?”

The woman smiled,“I don’t know what this is about ,son” ,she answered ,“but the young lady in the green suit begged me to wear this rose on my coat, and she said if you were to ask me out to dinner,I should tell you that she is waiting for you in the restaurant across the street 。she said it was some kind of test”

It’s not difficult to admire Miss Maynell’s wisdom, the true nature of a heart is seen in it’s response to the unattractive。
