Once upon a time a man had a big house, and in the house there was a big Oven; but thisman's family was smAll——only himself and his wife.
從前，有個人擁有一幢大房子，裏面有個大火爐。可他家人口很少——只有他和他的妻子。
When winter came, the man tried to keep his Oven going all day, so that the entire stock of hisfirewood was consumed in a month. Now, with nothing to feed the fire, it was cold in the house.
冬天來了，這個人想盡辦法不讓爐子滅掉，一個月就把柴禾全燒光了。沒什麼可以燒的了，屋子裏很冷。
Then the man began to break up his fences, and use the boards for fuel. When he had burntup all of his fences, the house, now without any protection against the wind, was colder thanever, and still they had no firewood.
然後，他開始拆除籬笆，把木板當柴燒。燒了籬笆，房子沒有了擋風的屏障，比以前更冷了。可他們又沒有柴燒了。
Then the man began to tear down the ceiling of his house, and burn that in the Oven.
接下來，這個人開始拆除天花板，放進爐子裏燒。
A neighbour noticed that he was tearing down his ceiling, and said to him:
鄰居看到後，覺得他在顫抖的，對他說：
"Why, neighbour, have you lost your mind----pulling down your ceiling in winter? Your andyour wife will freeze to death!'
“哎呀，鄰居，你瘋了嗎?大冬天拆天花板，你和你妻子會凍死的。”
But the man said:"No, brother, you see I am pulling down my ceiling so as to have somethingto heat my Oven with. We have such a curious one; the more I heat it up, the colder we are!"
可是，這個人說：“不，兄弟，我拆天花板是爲了燒爐子。我們的爐子真是怪，越燒越冷
The neighbour laughed, and said: "Well, then, after you have burnt up your ceiling, then youwill be tearing down your house. You won't have anywhere to live; only the Oven will be left, andeven that will be cold!"
鄰居笑道;"哦，那麼，你燒完天花板就會拆房子了。那時你就沒地方住了，只剩下那隻火爐，可連它也是冰冷的。
"Well, that is my misfortune," said the man." All my neighbours have firewood enough for allwinter; but I have already burnt up my fences and the ceiling of my house, and have nothingleft."
“哎，這是我的不幸，”這個人說，“所有的鄰居都有足夠的柴火過冬，而我已經燒掉了籬笆和天花板，什麼也不剩了。”
The neighbour replied:" All you need is to have your Oven rebuilt."
鄰居回答道：“你只要重弄個爐子就行了。”
But the man said :" I know well that you are jealous of my house and my Oven because theyare larger than yours, and so you advise me to rebuild it."
可是，這個人說：“我很清楚，你是嫉妒我的房子和爐子，它們比你家的大，所以你勸我重弄個爐子。”
So he turned a deaf ear to his neighbour's advice, and burnt up his ceiling, then his wholehouse, and in the end had to go and live with strangers.
結果，他把鄰居的勸告當作耳邊風，燒掉天花板後，又把房子也給燒掉了。最後，他只得背井離鄉，流落異地。
適合一年級的英語故事：小偷和他的母親A young man was caught stealing, and sentenced to death three days later.
一個小偷被抓住了，被判處死刑，三天後執行。
He wanted to speak with his mother before the execution. Of course this was granted.
他想在行刑前與他的母親話別，得到了允許。
When his mother came to him, he said, "I want to tell you something." He said something butshe could not hear. He whispered again, and when she came close to him, she put her ear to hismouth. He nearly bit off her ear. All the bystanders were horrified.

“這是對她的懲罰，”小偷說，“我小時候小偷小摸，把偷的東西帶回家時，她不但不懲罰我，反而笑着說‘別讓人看見。’就是因爲她我才落個今天這樣的下場。”
適合一年級的英語故事：董永賣身葬父According to the legend, Dong Yong was a man of Qiancheng (today's north of GaoqingCounty, Shandong) in the East Han Dynasty. His mother died when he was young and thefamily moved to Anlu (in today's Hubei) to avoid the war.
董永，相傳爲東漢時期千乘(今山東高青縣北)人，少年喪母，因避兵亂遷居安陸(今屬湖北)。
Later, his father died and Dong Yong sold himself to a rich family as a slave so as to bury hisfather.
其後父親亡故，董永賣身至一富家爲奴，換取喪葬費用。
When he was on his way to work, Dong Yong met with a woman under a pagoda tree and shesaid that she was homeless. So they got married.
上工路上，於槐蔭下遇一女子，自言無家可歸，二人結爲夫婦。
The woman wove 300 bolts of cloth in one month and bought back Dong Yong's freedom.
女子以一月時間織成三百匹錦緞
When they passed the pagoda tree on their way home, the women told Dong Yong she was thedaughter to the Emperor of Heaven and was ordered to help him repay the debt.
爲董永抵債贖身，返家途中，行至槐蔭，女子告訴董永：自己是天帝之女，奉命幫助董永還債。
With that said, she flew away. Henceforth the pagoda tree was renamed "compassion forpiety".
言畢凌空而去。因此，槐蔭改名爲孝感。
