Following the interlocking stratagems they had laid， Wang Yun betrothed his step daughter Diao Chan to Lü Bu， then， to sow discord between the two， presented the girl to Dong Zhou as a concubine. Lü Bu was furious， and each time he met Diao Chan， the latter feigned a sad tearful look. One day， while Dong Chan was in court， Lü Bu rushed back to Dong Zhuo's residence to see the girl. In the Fengyi Pavilion the girl said to him with a desperate look， “I have prolonged my life in disgrace simply so I could have a final meeting with you and let you know my feelings. Ishould have waited upon you but unfortunately Dong Zhuo took me by force. We can only meet in the next life…” So saying she meant to throw herself into the lotus pool. Lü Bu hurriedly held her back and swore， “How can I be a man if I fail to marry you?”

Suddenly aware of Lü Bu's absence， Dong Zhuo， suspicious， rushed back to his residence to see Diao Chan was nowhere. the service maids told him the girl and Lü Bu were in the back garden. Dong Zhuo rushed there and at the sight of the two， roared with anger. Lü Bu fled. When Dong Zhuo got back to his bedroom he saw Diao Chan's face was tearful. Being demanded for an answer， the girl said， “I was enjoying flowers in the back garden when Lü Bu stole in to take my liberty. I tried to escape but he drove me to the pavilion with his lance…” Before long the interlocking stratagems worked out-Dong Zhuo was killed by Lü Bu.

呂布戲貂禪

按着王允和貂蟬商定的“ 連環計”，王允先把貂蟬收爲義女許給呂布爲妻。爲挑撥董卓與呂布的關係，後來又把貂蟬送給董卓爲妾。呂布見貂蟬被董卓霸佔，心中憤憤不平。貂蟬在呂布面前也假意傷心落淚。一日，董卓上朝議事，呂布忙跑加相府來會貂蟬，二人來到風儀亭，貂蟬悽悽切切地說：“我忍辱偷生是爲了見將軍一面，表白我心意，我本應該服侍將軍，現在卻被董卓霸佔，今日見面，我心意已了，今生不能作夫妻，再等來世吧!”說完縱身要往荷花池跳。呂布上前抱住說：“我今生不娶你，絕非英雄!”董卓在殿上正議事，回頭不見呂布，心中疑惑，急忙回府。進後堂找不到貂蟬，問丫環才知貂蟬、呂布在後花園。董卓急趕到後花園，向二人在吼一聲，呂布轉身就跑。董卓回到臥室，見貂蟬哭得淚人一般，責問貂蟬說：“你爲什麼私通呂布!”貂蟬哭訴道：“我在後花園看花，呂布進來調戲我，我急忙躲開，他提畫戟把我趕到鳳儀亭……”，後來，董卓找呂布追問貂蟬被調戲之事，呂布反目刺死了董卓。

This is a story from Three Kingdoms. Guan Yu was hit by a poisonous arrow in the right arm while attacking Fancheng City. When his men took the arrowhead out， they found that the poison had already seeped into the bone， so they persuaded him to go to Jingzhou for treatment. Determined to take over Fancheng City， Guan refused to retreat. Seeing Guan's wound getting worse day by day， they sent out scouts to look for famous doctors. One day， a man named Hua Tuo came by boat to the camp especially to cure Guan Yu. Guan asked him about how he would heal the wound. Hua said： “I am afraid that you will be scared， so Isuggest that we set up a post with a loop to tie down your arm with rope. Then， when your eyes are covered， I will start the operation.” Guan laughingly said， “That's necessary.” Then he gave orders to hold a dinner for Hua Tuo. After drinking several glasses of wine， Guan started to play chess. At the same time， he reached out his right arm to Hua Tuo and said， “It is at your disposal. I have no fear.” Hua cut the skin and flesh open and scraped the bone with scalpel. Everyone present covered his eyes while Guan continued drinking and playing chess. In a moment， the blood filled a basin. When the poison was scraped off the bone， Guan stood up and smilingly said， “Now my arm can move freely just like before. Mr. Hua Tuo， you are a magic doctor!” Hua said， “Since I started medical practice， I have not seen anyone like you. You are a magic general.”

刮骨療毒

關羽攻打樊城時，被毒箭射中右臂。將士們取出箭頭一看，毒已滲入骨頭，勸關羽回荊州治療。關羽決心攻下樊城，不肯退。將士們見關羽箭傷逐漸加重，便派人四處打聽名醫。一天，有人從江上駕小舟來到寨前，自報姓華名佗，特來給關羽治傷。關羽問華佗怎樣治法?華佗說：“我怕你害怕，立一柱子，柱子上吊一環，把你的胳膊套入環中，用繩子捆緊，再蓋住你的眼睛，給你開刀治療。”關羽笑着說：“不用捆。”然後吩咐宴招待華佗。關羽喝了幾杯酒就與人下棋，同時把右臂伸給華佗，並說：“隨你治吧，我不害怕。”華佗切開肉皮，用刀刮骨。在場的人嚇得用手捂着眼。再看關羽，一邊喝酒，一邊下棋。過了一會，血流了一盆，骨上的毒刮完，關羽笑着站起來對衆將說：“我的胳膊伸彎自如，好像從前一樣。華佗先生，你真是神醫呀!”華佗說：“我行醫以來，從沒見像你這樣了不起的人，將軍乃神人也。”

In the Three Kingdoms Period, during a battle between Cao Cao and Liu Bei, the latter ordered his generals Zhao Yun and Huang Zhong to capture Cao Cao’s supplies. Cao Cao led a large force against Zhao Yun, who retreated as fas as the gates of his camp. There, he ordered that the banners be lowered and the war drums silenced, and that the camp gates be left wide open. Zhao Yun then stationed(安置，駐紮) his troops in ambush(埋伏) nearly. When Cao Cao arrived and saw the situation, he immediately suspected a trap and withdrew his forces.

This idiom is nowadays used to indicate metaphorically(隱喻地) halting an attack or ceasing all activities.

《三國志。蜀志。趙雲傳》中記載：在一次戰鬥中，蜀將黃忠殺死了曹將夏侯淵，並奪取了戰略要地。曹操非常惱火，把米倉移到漢水旁的北山腳下，親率20萬大軍向陽平關大舉進攻。黃忠、張著商議趁夜燒劫魏軍糧草。臨行前趙雲和他們約定了返回時間，過期不歸就帶兵出寨接應，正與曹操親自統率的部隊相遇。趙雲同曹軍廝殺起來，把曹軍打得丟盔棄甲，救回了黃忠和張著。曹操沒有善罷甘休，指揮大隊人馬追殺趙雲，直撲蜀營。趙雲的副將張翼見趙雲已退回本寨，後面追兵來勢兇猛，便要關閉寨門拒守。趙雲下令大開營門，偃旗息鼓，準備放曹軍進來;一面又命令弓弩手埋伏在寨內外，然後自己單槍匹馬站在門口等候敵人。生性多疑的曹操追到寨門口，心想，寨門大開，必有伏兵，即匆忙下令撤退。就在曹操調頭後退的時候，蜀軍營裏金鼓齊鳴，殺聲震天，飛箭如雨般向曹軍射擊。曹軍驚慌失措，奪路逃命，自相踐踏。趙雲趁勢奪了曹軍的糧草，殺死了曹軍大批兵馬，得勝回營。 後來，人們常用“偃旗息鼓”來比喻休戰、無聲無息或停止行動。
