This I Believe

I believe it is possible for ordinary people to achieve extraordinary things. For me, the difference between an "ordinary" and an "extraordinary" person is not the title that person might have, but what they do to make the world a better place for us all.

I have no idea why people choose to do what they do. When I was a kid I didn’t know what I wanted to be when I grew up, but I did know what I didn’t want to do. I didn’t want to grow up. And I certainly didn’t think about being an activist. I didn’t even really know what one was.

My older brother was born deaf. Growing up, I ended up defending him and I often think that is what started me on my path to whatever it is I am today.

If I have any power as an individual, it’s because I work with other individuals in countries all over the world. We are ordinary people and we’ve all worked together to bring about extraordinary change.

I believe that words are easy. I believe that truth is told in the actions we take. And I believe that if enough ordinary people supported our desire for a better world with action we could accomplish absolutely extraordinary things.

Write Your Own Life

Suppose someone gave you a pen —a sealed, solid-colored pen.

You couldn’t see how much ink it had. It might run dry after the first few words or last just long enough to create a masterpiece (or several) that would last forever. You don’t know before you begin.

Under the rules of the game, you really never know. You have to take a chance!

Actually, no rule of the game states2 you must do anything. Instead of picking up and using the pen, you could leave it on a shelf or in a drawer where it will dry up, unused.

But if you do decide to use it, what would you do with it? How would you play the game?

Would you plan and plan before you ever wrote a word? Would your plans be so many that you never even started writing?

Or would you take the pen in hand, plunge right in and just do it?

Would you write cautiously and carefully, as if the pen might run dry the next moment, or would you pretend or believe (or pretend to believe) that the pen will write forever?

And of what would you write: Of love? Hate? Fun? Misery? Life? Death? Nothing? Everything?

Would you stay in or on the lines, or see no lines at all, even if they were there?

There’s a lot to think about here, isn’t there?

Now, suppose someone gave you a life...

It’s a new day

As you slowly open your eyes, look around, notice where the light comes into your room; listen carefully, see if there are any new sounds that you can recognize; feel with your body and spirit, and see if you can sense the freshness in the air.

Yes, yes, yes, it’s a new day, it’s a different day, and it’s a bright day! In your mind, you can see clearly the things you want to have, the places you intend to go, the relationships1 you desire to develop and the positions you aspire to reach.

You know all this is real as long as you are confident, passionate and committed! And you are confident; you are passionate; you are committed!

You will never waver in your pursuit. After all, you are the best, and you deserve the best! As your coach and friend, I can assure you the door to all the best things in the world will be open to you, but the key to that door is in your hand. You must do your part, you must follow the plans you make and take action as you plan, you must never stop, and you must never fear.

I know you must do it, you can do it, you will do it and you will succeed! Now stand firm and tall, get excited and shout it out: "I must do it! I can do it! I will do it! I will succeed!"
